A Fun Day Cooking Balinese Dishes at Kayun Restaurant

Yesterday, I had a great time hosting a cooking class at Kayun Restaurant. We were warmly greeted by a friendly face, which made us feel really welcome.

Gathering Ingredients

First, we went to the garden to pick fresh ingredients like obusin eggplants, ginger, turmeric, and cassava leaves. It was fun picking them, and we enjoyed being outside in the sunshine.

Cooking in a Traditional Setting

Then, we headed to the kitchen, which felt like a traditional Balinese kitchen with a firewood stove. The kitchen was cozy, and we were excited to get started. Our instructor showed us how to use the stove and other cooking tools.

Creating Balinese Delicacies

With the help of our instructor, we learned how to make several traditional Balinese dishes. We started by preparing chicken satay, mixing minced chicken with spices and threading it onto skewers. We then grilled the chicken satay on the barbecue, infusing it with smoky flavors. Next, we made a fragrant Balinese soup using the vegetables we picked from the garden. Lastly, we wrapped tuna in banana leaves and grilled it, creating a delicious and aromatic dish known as tum.

Tasting the Dishes

After cooking, we gathered around the table to taste our creations. The chicken satay was juicy and flavorful, with a hint of smokiness from the barbecue. The Balinese soup was comforting, and the tum was a tasty surprise, with the banana leaves imparting a unique aroma to the tuna.

Reflecting on the Experience

Overall, it was a fantastic experience. I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn about Balinese cooking and spend time at Kayun Restaurant.
