The Humans That Raised Me

I got wind of some really cool questions about our relationship with our parents posed by @selfhelp4trolls and I thought to share my personal piece on it. So here goes.

1.What role do/did your parents play in my life?
My parents played a vital role in my life. They were my first point of contact before any other form of socialization took place. They instilled in me so many values I still hold dear to this day. They were pretty protective of me as I was the last born and a girl child. I could have friends over but not go over to theirs and to be fair, I did not mind because I was somewhat introverted and preferred my own space all the time.

My parents like every Nigerian/African parent were apprehensive when it came to cultural things like what connotes respect, attempting to teach us our local language, making us go to church and joining the choir at a very young age, etc.

2.Has your relationship with your parents changed over the years?
Yes, it did. It improved greatly and became more mature. When I was younger, I realized I was that one child that my parents had so much trust in as my words were taken seriously. However, the fact that I was a girl made them protective of me and they were a bit more controlling of what I could and could not do.

Becoming an adult, this was not an easy conversation but eventually, my parents loosened the grip they had on me.

3.Is there anything you wish your parents do or would have done differently?
My parents are open-minded. I liked that they were and still are because they gave me room to express myself growing up. I went into the world being confident and independently minded.

I wished my parents did not have to bother so much about their responsibilities as parents and took vacation trips with us whenever we did. They would always stay home- or maybe that was their own way of unwinding.

4.How are you similar to your parents?
In terms of my physical looks, I took my features from both parents. I took my dad’s nose, height, and full legs. I took mom’s shoulders, smile, dimple, fingers, hands, etc.

In terms of character traits, I am as stubborn as my dad and as bubbly as my mom. Both parents are entrepreneurs and go-getters and this is something I portray.

5.How are you different from your parents?
Although my parents are open-minded, they are comfortable with the traditional way of doing things and I love to experiment, so there is some form of clash from time to time but we eventually make it work.

6.Do you prefer a more involved relationship with your parents or more distance?
I prefer a balanced relationship actually. A relationship close enough to be there for each other whenever and share vital information about our lives but one where mutual respect for each other’s personal decisions and space exist. I am glad to say I currently enjoy this with my parents. My dad passed, so my mom still upholds this.

But I'm also sorry that Daddy had to go see the Maker sooner before planned, but I know he's in the humble abode watching and being proud of the woman his little baby girl is becoming.

Thank you for your kind words. He told me how proud he was of me at every opportunity he got- even before he took his last breath.

Thanks for stopping by @khingstan!

Thanks hun. I wish that day never came but it's the inevitability of life.

You really look like him.

😂 I’m a spitting replica of his mom actually…

Balance is important and I like the way you describe it. Trust and communication but with personal space.

Love the pictures!!

You look a lot like your dad. I have no idea why parents give so much and never think it's time to receive even when it is. It's like they're wired that way.

😂 Then you need to see his mom, it’s like she spat me out…

I force my mom to have fun and anything she asks for that is in my power to fulfill, I do it with urgency.
