Weekend-Engagement #211: Language swear words.

Language is a fundamental tool for communication between individuals. Words allow us to express emotions, thoughts, opinions and transmit information effectively. However, the use of certain words considered rude or vulgarly known as swear words has generated controversy throughout time.

The use of swear words has been present in different cultures and times. This type of language is used informally among common people, while in more educated circles its use is avoided.

In music, artists such as Eminem or 2Pac have used swear words in their lyrics to denounce social injustice and express their anger and frustration. These figures have contributed to open a debate on freedom of expression and the limits of language.

On the one hand, foul language can be seen as a form of emotional release, allowing people to express their deepest feelings directly and without filters. In situations of anger, frustration or pain, the use of profanity can be cathartic and help relieve emotional tension.

I take as an example stand up comedy, which is a comedy genre in which a comedian performs in front of a live audience and delivers a humorous monologue based on personal observations, life experiences or sarcastic comments about society. One of the most distinctive aspects of this style of comedy is the use of vulgar language or profanity to provoke laughter and connect with the audience in a more direct and authentic way. Figures such as Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock have pioneered the use of crude and provocative language in their performances. These performers have demonstrated that profanity can be a powerful tool to address difficult topics, challenge conventions and provoke thought.

Some consider foul language to be a legitimate and authentic form of expression, while others perceive it as disrespectful and impolite. Morality, culture, religion and social context are determining factors in how the use of profanity is perceived. Excessive use of profanity can cause discomfort, offend others, and damage the image and reputation of the user.

The use of profanity can be seen as a manifestation of freedom of expression and linguistic diversity. Foul language can be a way of preserving the identity and authenticity of certain communities. In literature, film and music, swear words can be used creatively and subversively to convey intense emotions and provoke reflection in the audience.

But the indiscriminate use of profanity can be counterproductive and create a toxic and offensive environment. Foul language can be used as a weapon of intimidation, discrimination and verbal violence, perpetuating gender, racial or sexual orientation stereotypes. In the workplace, the use of profanity is seen as unprofessional and affects reputation and interpersonal relationships.

New technologies and digital platforms have expanded the scope of language, allowing people to express themselves more freely and creatively. However, it is important to keep in mind the limits of respect and empathy in communicative interactions, to avoid hurting sensitivities or promoting verbal violence. Language is a reflection of our identity and our experiences, so its use must be careful and thoughtful.

At the university where I studied, the use of swear words was constant, especially at soccer games and outside the classroom, but I was and still am careful with my language when communicating. I grew up in a family where I rarely heard swear words, and yes, I must confess that I use colloquially swear words to express myself with friends and family but in its minimum expression or I say some bad words from time to time when something bothers me, and in particular when I have to interact with many people in my work environment I do not use swear words.

This is my participation this weekend in the initiative proposed by @galenkp called Weekend-Engagement topics in its week 211 Link here.

This weekend I chose to develop the following topic:

Is swearing ok or not? Discuss either way with examples. Use your own photos.

A big greeting to everyone in the community, I wish you an excellent and productive weekend. Thanks for your attention.

The first image is of my property, it was taken with a Kodak camera and dates from 1986, in it I am the boy who is crouched in the middle. I was the defender of a college soccer team. It was modified using the graphic design program Canva. The second image is my own.

The second image is my own and was taken with my Umidigi F2 cell phone. It was modified using the graphic design program Canva.

It is true, we should not be swearing all the time, however I know many people that out of every ten words they say, 8 are swear words! And every day.
