[ENG-PT] My first big sporting event / Meu primeiro grande evento esportivo
Hello everyone,
At the end of July, I attended for the first time in my life an important sports event. I went to Brisbane Stadium to watch Brazil vs France for the Fifa Women’s World Cup. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I knew beforehand that it would be something incredible to be part of, but I was still taken aback by it.

No final de julho eu compareci, pela primeira vez na minha vida, a um evento esportivo importante. Eu fui ao Brisbane Stadium para assistir ao jogo Brasil e França pela Copa do Mundo de Futebol Feminino da Fifa. Foi uma das mais maravilhosas experiências da minha vida. Eu já sabia que ia ser algo incrível de fazer parte, mas ainda assim foi um baque.
To give a bit of context, I’m Brazilian, so football is very much present in my life, even if I don’t want it to. But I was never too invested in following any sports events. I like to watch the Olympic Games when they are on, but I wouldn’t make much effort to follow a match or anything. That is the reason why I didn’t pay much attention when people started talking about this World Cup, so I didn’t make any plans for it.
Dando um pouco de contexto, eu sou brasileira, então futebol sempre esteve presente na minha vida, eu querendo ou não. Mas nunca fui muito de acompanhar eventos esportivos. Eu gosto de assistir as Olimpíadas quando acontecem, mas nunca fui de fazer muito esforço de acompanhar partidas. Essa é a razão porque não prestei muita atenção quando as pessoas começaram a falar sobre a Copa, então não fiz nenhum plano pra ela.
I live in Perth now, which is the most remote capital of Australia. And even here in the wild west, the World Cup was present. They started organising events around the town to promote it. That’s when I started to think, there is a huge event taking place in the country that I’m living in, and I have a chance to participate. I started looking at the dates and places of the matches, saw that Brazil would not play here, only in the East Coast. That made me lose interest, I don't want to cross the country to watch a football match. But then, everywhere you look people are talking about it, people in the Facebook groups saying that they would travel to watch this or that match, and it got me excited too. I started looking at tickets and saw that they weren’t available. After seeing a post of someone saying that they were opening new sales every day I decided to check again the next day and there were a few available in a good spot of the stadium. I bought it right away. I will see about the flights later.
Eu hoje moro em Perth, que é a capital mais remota da Austrália. E até aqui nesse fim de mundo a Copa do Mundo estava presente. Eles começaram a organizar eventos na cidade para promovê-la. Foi quando eu comecei a pensar, tem um evento gigante acontecendo no país que estou morando e eu tenho uma oportunidade de participar. Comecei a ver as datas e lugares das partidas e vi que o Brasil não ia jogar aqui, somente na costa leste. Isso me fez perder um pouco o interesse, eu não queria atravessar o país pra assistir uma partida de futebol. Mas aí em todo lugar que eu olhava tinha gente falando sobre isso, pessoal nos grupos de Facebook comentando que iam viajar pra assistir uma ou outra partida, isso me empolgou também. Comecei a ver ingressos e não achava pra comprar. Depois que vi um post de uma pessoa falando que eles estavam abrindo as vendas aos poucos todo dia, eu decidi olhar de novo no dia seguinte e encontrei alguns disponíveis em um ponto legal do estádio. Comprei na hora. Depois resolvo o vôo.

So after overthinking a bit more, on the next day I booked the fights. They were quite expensive, but that is the price to pay when you decide on a trip less than 2 weeks before. I wanted to participate in the event and have that experience, so I was fine with the price I had to pay. And I did not regret it for a second. Even when the result of the game was disappointing. The whole experience was so incredible that not even a bad result of the game would affect it.
Depois de pensar bastante, comprei as passagens no dia seguinte. Foi um tanto caro, mas esse é o preço que se paga quando se decide viajar em cima da hora. Eu queria participar do evento e viver a experiência, então me conformei que era o preço que eu ia pagar. E não me arrependi nem por um momento. Mesmo o resultado do jogo sendo decepcionante. A experiência como um todo foi tão incrível que nem um resultado ruim no jogo ia estragar.
I started seeing the excitement of the Brazilians in Brisbane on the morning of the match when I went to the city centre to buy a t-shirt for the game. I went to 3 shops and in all of them there were other Brazilians searching for the same thing. I already knew that there would be a pre-game party in the afternoon from the social media posts, so after a getting a bit of rest (I hadn’t slept much during the overnight flight), I took the train there. I arrived at the party a couple of hours late, and I was quite shocked to see how big it was. The party was at a pub very close to the stadium, less than 1km walking. The street in front of the bar was closed because of the match and that was a great thing because the people took over it. There wasn’t enough space inside the bar for everyone, so a lot of the people stayed outside on the street. I don’t know what I was expecting, but certainly wasn’t that many Brazilians all in the same place.
Comecei a ver a empolgação dos brasileiros em Brisbane na manhã da partida quando eu fui no centro da cidade comprar uma camiseta pra ir no jogo. Eu fui em 3 lojas e em todas tinha brasileiros procurando a mesma coisa. Eu já sabia pelos posts nas redes sociais que ia ter uma festa de esquenta do jogo na tarde, então depois de descansar um pouco (não tinha dormido quase nada no vôo), peguei o trem pra lá. Cheguei na festa algumas horas atrasada e fiquei pasma com o tamanho dela. A festa aconteceu num bar perto to estádio, menos de 1km andando. A rua em frente ao bar estava fechada por causa da partida, o que foi uma ótima porque as pessoas tomaram conta da rua. Não tinha espaço suficiente dentro do bar pra todo mundo, então as pessoas ficaram na parte de fora. Eu não sei o que eu estava esperando, mas com certeza não era aquela quantidade de brasileiros num mesmo lugar.

An hour before the game, people started the walk together to the stadium, playing instruments and singing. It was beautiful to see the street absolutely taken by the people excited and happy for the game. Women’s football hasn’t been a popular sport in Brazil, even though we have a player that has been named 6 times the best in the world. Seeing all those people excited for the game was really amazing.
Uma hora antes de jogo, as pessoas começaram a descer a rua em direção ao estádio, tocando a batucada e cantando. Foi lindo de ver a rua toda tomada pelas pessoas felizes e empolgadas pelo jogo. Futebol feminino no Brasil nunca foi um esporte popular, mesmo nós tendo a jogadora que foi eleita a melhor do mundo por 6 vezes. Ver todas aquelas pessoas animadas pelo jogo foi maravilhoso.
When I got to my seat at the stadium, I was a bit anxious because I went alone and I had no idea if there would be other Brazilians sitting next to me. I would feel a bit awkward if there were only foreigners around me, even more so if they were all French. 😆 Thankfully, the Brazilians started to arrive, and I was very lucky that the group sitting close to me were a group of very friendly young ladies. That made the game much more fun to watch.
Quando eu cheguei no meu lugar no estádio fiquei um pouco preocupada porque eu fui sozinha e não tinha ideia se teria mais brasileiros sentando perto de mim. Eu ia ficar um tanto constrangida se eu ficasse no meio de um bando de estrangeiros, pior ainda se fossem todos franceses.😆Ainda bem que os brasileiros começaram a chegar, e dei sorte que um grupo de meninas bem gente boa sentou perto de mim. Isso fez o jogo muito mais divertido.
It was great to watch the stadium filling up and seeing that most of the people were wearing the Brazilian colours. The attendance that night was almost 50 thousand people. Singing the national anthem was certainly the most emotional moment of the night. At the end, when they stop the music, and you can hear the whole stadium singing is a unique sensation. I had seen that on tv before, but being there is something else.
Foi muito bom ver o estádio enchendo e perceber que a maioria estava usando as cores do Brasil. A lotação no estádio foi de quase 50 mil pessoas. Cantar o hino nacional foi de longe o momento mais emocionante da noite. Na parte final, quando eles param a música, e você consegue ouvir o estádio inteiro cantando é uma sensação única. Eu já tinha visto isso na tv, mas presenciar é algo sensacional.
After that, the night was a roller-coaster of emotions. In the 90 minutes of the game, I went through, excitement, anxiety, anger, happiness and sadness. I had forgotten how overwhelming a football match can be. It is certainly great entertainment, but I don’t think I could go through all that on a weekly basis, following a team playing in various competitions. I prefer to have a proper recovery time between these events. Every 2 years is good enough for me. The next time that I will stop to watch a football match after this World Cup will be in the Olympic Games. That is plenty of time for me to recover from all those emotions. 🙂
Depois disso, a noite foi uma avalanche de emoções, passei por animação, ansiedade, raiva, alegria e tristeza. Eu tinha esquecido o quão avassaladora uma partida de futebol pode ser. Com certeza é um ótimo passatempo, mas não acho que consigo passar por tudo isso toda semana, acompanhando um time em várias competições. Prefiro ter um tempo de recuperação entre esses eventos. A cada 2 anos já tá bom pra mim. A próxima vez que vou parar pra assistir uma partida de futebol depois dessa Copa vai ser nas Olimpíadas. Vai ser tempo suficiente pra eu me recuper de todas essas emoções.🙂

Watching a game live is something in my bucket list! I wonder if I would feel so overwhelmed like you when I finally get to watch a match live!
Funny that you did overthink about it but never regretted it in the end, no matter what the results are. And so fun to see those supporters marching to the stadium together!

I'm not a bit football fan but when there are major matches I tend to watch them, such as this tournament. I think you made a very good call to go watch and support your home team and being in the venue to experience the atmosphere, there is nothing that can match that... apart from winning I guess 🙃
It was an amazing experience for sure.
I don't follow much sports, but when there is an important event like this, it is worth it to participate and live the experience. If you have the chance to participate in something like this, go for it. 😀
