Hello, Hive.

Hello Everyone, Welcome to Kwara State, welcome to Ilorin, and most especially welcome to Tanke. Oh yes, I could have dropped you a map to show exactly where Monica lives but tanke is on the google map and you will find me right behind this popular restaurant Hehe

I only moved into this neighborhood two months ago, but I heard stories scary ones at that and I have experienced a very close one as well. My apartment is a 5-minute walk from the main road, where everything is bubbling. We have that large restaurant you see up there and typical of places with restaurants and shopping malls, you have some rich people spreading cash, buying food, and others.

Above is just another of those shopping malls close to my place. Think of buying anything food related and you will find it there toys, clothes just name that thing you need, and it will be provided for you there. More so they have a game station, a gym, and a recreation room where you can relax your nerves for a moment.

I am leaving you with some beautiful pictures, banners of small businesses, and, of course, our roadside market traders. Here you can get groceries and anything soup.

From this view, I guess that you can see just how busy our tanke is. In addition, this road is the major route leading to the Federal University of Ilorin, meaning that this location is a bit close to the school, and anyone who wishes to be a day student can rent an apartment here and still be able to make it to school in record time. Although locations closer to the schools houses more students, we have a handful of them in the environment as well. Everyone coming from town passes this one road to campus.

Talking about the crime rate here everyone here lives within a gate and fence. Maybe to combat thieves and crime rates, or, as it is the order of the day in Nigeria, for everyone to live behind a fence.

What if the thief lives within?

A few weeks prior to when I moved in, I heard from my neighbors that the person who moved out of this house was attacked and had to relocate.

An ordinary phone call got her into trouble.

The walls have ears, they say, and while she was making a call during the day to a friend of her regarding wanting to sell some gold ornaments she has kept for a long time (to meet some financial needs), the thief heard it. It wasn't late into the night before he found his way into her home and demanded the gold. With threating her , she handed everything to him. The idiot didnt take her mobile phone or any other valuable item since she didn't have much and the mobile isn't a fancy one

IMG_1006-2.jpeg

After he left and she screamed for help, a quick investigation showed that the gate was opened and that the thief had come in using a key; there was no sign of where anyone had jumped a fence or something of that sort to come into the compound Although from her description of the person's physique, they suspected just one person within the neighborhood, but they dare not raise an accusing finger since he wasn't caught red-handed.
The gate key can be duplicated by the thief or maybe the thief lives within the compound that houses five flat.

I had my own share of experience the day I moved in.

After moving my belongings in, the apartment was still dark with no electrical wiring yet, and water was yet to run in the house as well.

My belongings were there, but the house was not livable yet. I went to pass the night with a friend, having that pride that I won't go back home to sleep one more night in my daddy's house since I have finally moved out 😀🤓.

Forgetting to bring a padlock for the house, I prayed and surrendered the safety of my belongings to God 🤓😂😁😃.
Maybe it was the same theif or another; I cannot say. The individual came to try his luck.

Luckily for the person, my place was accessible (no padlock). He searched through all of my things and scattered everything, no penny 🤓😃. No gold, silver or diamonds, sorry bro sister Monica No be rich babe.🤓

While I was away, my heart kept beating because of my machines and other assets which anyone may decide to pick and resell, but I was lucky none of my items were missing when I came in the following day.
You need to see how I opened the door and peep in to have a first glance hoping that everything is intact.

image (2).png

Now I adopt very strict measures to keep my assets and belongings safe. My mobile phone stays under my bed when I sleep so that a shovel will not come and pluck it if it is accessible. I will lock the door and check it over and over again before closing my eyes.

Typically, students are known for this kind of thing, as not all students are clean, but others are here to cause trouble.
Nevertheless you cannot detect a criminal from his looks.

Everyone lives at a gate.

The environment is quiet.

But some thieves live behind these quiet gates.

Be safe, everyone out there.

Omo I thought thieves have conduct never to steal in the house they live in so they won't be exposed or discovered, but seems the thief in your own compound doesn't care about rules.

Stay safe and double-check your door when you want to sleep, your windows must not be left open too , i have seen cases where they just slide in their hand through the window and tv and other stuff disappeared.

And I pray he gets caught sooner than later. Except for that reason we have one serene and beautiful environment plus there is fair amount of power supply.

My windows and never opened, I will your piece of advice in mind.
Thank you so much.

There are actually thieves that are known in the neighborhood but people are scared of surrendering them to the authorities. God keep us safe

That's totally true.
Will I surrender my brother to the authority if he is a thief?
That's the problem.

I am so sorry to hear that your home was invaded by a stranger- a thief who went through all of your personal belongings!

So lucky that he didn't take any thing from you and I hope that he doesn't come back again!

I used to live in a big shared house and people were creeping in all the time stealing things, so I know how unsettling it feels.

Have you thought about making some booby traps. Simple and cheap things like stringing together empty tin cans and when you go to bed at night, tie them across your front door and tie them to your window so if anyone tries to open them when your asleep, you will wake up and the noise will scare them off.

I used to use them and they worked well!

Then there's always the rat trap. Set that every night in front of the front door and bang! Ouch.....that's if the noise from the tin cans doesn't scare them off first. (and most importantly- don't tell anyone that you have those booby traps!

A spray bottle with dye in it is good too, then the wannabe thief will be walking around for days stained in the colour that you choose- blue would be the best...🤣...!

And when you move house and all of your things are packed up in boxes and bags, that is almost an invitation for thieves. It's like you have gift wrapped everything of yours for them and to them- all their christmas' have come at once...so that's when you have to be extra careful.

I am so sorry that you had to go through that horrible experience, but unfortunately it happens everywhere and with the cost of living going up, pay going down, rent going up, people losing jobs, food going up, it's only going to get worse too I think, so best prepare yourself as much as you can.

Stay safe hon!

You got me laughing with all suggestion but truth be told they will really work well.
My mum once had that rat trap set in her bag of groundnuts which caught one of my aunt when she went to pick some groundnuts hidden for next year planting.
This is really a good suggestion.

Thank you for sharing.
I hope that we will all survive this hardship.

Yes, the tin cans as a 'doorbell' and if that fails, the rat trap!

Wow I bet your aunt had a fright when she got the rat trap instead of the Groundnuts...poor woman must have turned her hair gray!

Yes I too hope that we will survive the hardships and that more people won't have to turn to theft to survive and to eat...

Living in a place where the previous resident left because of theft is scary! And knowing that the thief lives next door is even worse!

I wish you divine protection @monica-ene !
