Sunday Reflections: it is the small things.....

avatar
(Edited)

It is a somber Sunday. The rain clouds hang in the heavens and seem like a blanket over the city. I must admit that I love these types of days, just as much as I love sunny days.

Amsterdam city center - May 2019

Flashbacks
This morning I sat alone in the living room, enjoying the stillness of the house. On grey days like this, I often get flashbacks to my youthful days in England. Many Sundays were spent with family or family friends. It was the most fun when the meeting was not at our home. We enjoyed visiting others. Sometimes we would arrive early to be a part of the meal preparation. My siblings and I use to say,
"Every meeting is an eating!"
Food is truly a love Ianguage. After the "eating" it was great to listen to the older folks. They were always talking about "the good old days". It did not make sense back then. When we got bored, there were enough kids present to share our own stories or play board games. That was a very long time ago though.

This week
I am brought back to the present moment and start to reflect on this past week. I decided that it was not that special. However, on second thoughts that is not totally true. Apart from routine tasks for work, I realised that I did some nice things this week.

I spent a lot of time with my 16 year old daughter. She started a "new" high school. She is in the same system, but different level and location - hence many new faces. I took time out to listen because change can be daunting. Change can be somewhat stressful too and it seemed like she was the first few days. By the end of the week - she seemed more relaxed. Her daily stories about her teachers, classmates and subjects were quite animated. Overall, she likes her new class. I savour these moments with my daughter because I know this will change very soon.

Another nice thing that occurred this week, was assisting a small business in the health and wellness industry with their backoffice. The organisation has a holistic approach and many "alternative" professionals. I realise that I enjoy assisting them whenever I can. The majority of people affiliated with the business are very well meaning. It is not only about making a profit. They operate from the heart.

On Friday evening, a neighbour dropped by. My balcony garden is always a happy talking point. I shared some vegetables from my garden with her. I could give her lettuce, tomatoes, coriander and potatoes. She was amazed with what I produced in grow bags and a table garden. She was incentivised to start a small garden as well. I told her that I can help her whenever she is ready.

Reflecting on this past week for this post, made me realise that it was a good week indeed. I realise that I was productive but I also did nice things for others. I am sure I felt good during the week, but writing about it now makes me feel happy again.

This quote is definitely true:

All photos are my own

As far as I can read you had a very productive week. I loved the balcony garden initiative, but I liked the photos of what you grew even more.

Luckily my children were born in NL so it makes it easier. English and Dutch comes naturally but as you know in schools here they typically have Germany and French as well. She does not have German this year though.

Thank you regarding the tomatoes. You are not far away so we have similar weather. I hope your tomatoes will be fully awake and ripened soon. It can still be possible until late October to November especially with an "indian summer".

I sowed the seed at the end of March and placed them outside in June. When the heavy rains arrived in July I already had green tomatoes. I was very excited when I could pick the first red cherry tomatoes although they bursted due to the over-watering.

Many thanks for the "follow".

Those vegetable look delicious! Balcony gardens are awesome these days. Just seeing how much you would habe to pay at the supermarket for those items. That could actually save a fortune

Although I am in the city - the seeds and soil are organic and I see and taste the difference in the vegetable. I have not tried to figure out how much I have saved but it is wonderful to walk outside and have all I need for a salad etc.

I savour these moments with my daughter because I know this will change very soon.

My son is 26 with a child of his own. I remember him at 16, helping with his studies, with deep nostalgia.

How awesome you've inspired people to garden. What a lovely, reflective post.

Thank you @riverflows
Aww I can imagine. It goes by so swiftly.
Yes - I am encouraging as many people as possible. I know once they start - especially on a manageable scale - they will get as much pleasure from the garden as I do.

This is an incredible Sunday Reflections post: you've actually hit the mark of what the reflections are about, which is to appreciate the great and interesting things going on in your life right now. Looks like you did a heck of a job this week (and I'll accept those bright tomatoes in lieu of free compliments 😜).

Keep it up, and I hope to see what the next week will bring. 😊

Hmmmm this is awesome mooma and I totally understand how you feel in this reflection post of yours, as you have said change can be very stressful and hectic, it actually take quite some time for one to truly settle down in a new location, I believe with time, she is going to get fully settled in, you have indeed done a good job as a mother by being there for her, you gave her a listening ear which is the most beautiful part of it, well done dear.

Thank you @rafzat. I am not sure I understand what you mean.
I do not check her books - I made a photo to show that she is back to school.

I do check daily - to find out how her day was.

Aww, I throughly enjoyed reading your reflections of last week Momo 🥰 It had a serene feel to it, just like you must have felt when writing it. I !love that you infected your neighbour with an interest in growing her own food on the balcony. That’s amazing 🤩

Take care and have another sublime week ahead 💙

Yes -that is true. Thank you for noticing. It was by myself and feeling very calm indeed. My mind was very calm as well. Yes I certainly infected my neighbour and she has more space than I do as she has a back yard. I must admit my balcony is extraordinary - so I do have quite some space. I hope more of my friends will start a garden next season.

Have a sublime week and I hope you will be better very soon.

You've had an amazing week filled with different highlights of happenings, both from the past and present.

I can remember growing up and experiencing adult indulge in such conversation, just like you, we get bored and entertain ourselves with what interest us.

It's so thoughtful of you to help out that firm who on their own are also all about aiding others.

Changing environment comes with loads of things, but then it's good to see your daughter is adapting well in her new school.

Yes -it is funny how as kids we were curious about our parents conversation - we learn and remember but maybe it is onlynowthat we understand.

My daughter is settling in nicely - it is always nerve-wracking at the start. Fingers crossed that she will have a good year.

The very little little help you render to people really goes a long way to ease them of their needs.
You derive happiness in making others happy, keep it up.
