My magical oasis

(Edited)

I started a garden at home about 3 years ago. Some friends discouraged me because I live in the city. The argument was,
“Why have organic soil and seeds for a city garden.”
My response was “Why not!!”

I did well with house plants but had no clue about a vegetable garden. However, where there is a will there is always a way. I discovered that a friend had everything from the “Makkelijke Moestuin” - it translates to “easy home gardening”. I was enthusiastic - I bought soil, seeds, grows bags and a table garden. I had their app to guide me as well - so gardening seemed easy indeed. There was no going back.

I observed with excitement, after sewing seeds in the soil or placing seeds to germinate. The transformation only needed warmth or moist, some days and invisible powers.

seeds for germination

Soon the magic unfurled when the first sprouts began to grow in the table garden etc.

I also had planters with strawberry plants, hanging off the balcony. Soon enough it looked like a real garden.

I must admit that I was surprised at how well everything went. The first thing I harvested was radishes. It was very exciting.

All my visitors remarked on how healthy everything looked. I often joked that my garden is magical. I give it a lot of love but the rest I leave to Mother Nature.

The harvests have been amazing. It might sound cliche but I reaped what I sowed - literally.

From bright red peppers

and beets,

to daily sweet strawberries throughout the summer,

or oodles of cherry tomatoes

and potatoes.

My pride and joy has been those moments when I make a salad and everything came from my garden: lettuce leaves, tomatoes, cucumbers and sometimes red peppers and radishes.

In additional to the harvests, the bonus item which I did not anticipate were the awesome flower of the plants.

In this fascinating ecosystem, I also learnt to expect the expected, such as the visiting pollinators - the bees

bees

and pest eaters - the ladybugs.

ladybugs

As you can imagine, there were also unexpected visitors who wreaked havoc on the garden. Some came and saw this amazingly verdant garden and tried to conquer it - by outstaying their welcome. Holy moley - the snails

snail

and caterpillars operated like thieves in the night.

caterpillar

Take a look at the bok choi (pak soy).

This once peaceful environment became a war zone; the aphids arrived.

Then the powdery mildew - it truly wanted to take over.

As a result, it was not all hunky dordy in my little oasis. However, one learns fast and I became a warrior. My first weapon for counterattack was to remove the leaves that the culprits overran.

However, I've also made my own home-made pesticide of cayenne, garlic, onions and a bit organic soap.

If one starts early with this pesticide, then the battle will be won very swiftly.

I was the victor as I've harvested quite a lot of vegetables and also shared with neighbours.

veggie package for a neighbour

I also have the usual herbs - basil, thyme, rosemary, bay leaves, mint etc. I am very proud of the plants I propagated myself such as these basil plants.

I must say as a relatively new gardener - it gives me much pleasure when these experiments are successful. I planted garlic and pumpkin last year.

This year I planted courgette (zucchinis).

Normally, if I could not be found my family knew that I was out with friends or walking. However, now I have a new hobby - my garden. They do not need to look too far. My time in the garden is time well spent. During the week, I am mostly harvesting and watering. At weekends, I have more time to remove weeds, inspect the plants, remove dead leaves or suckers, hunt for caterpilars etc.

a day's harvest

I have joy and contentment while tending my garden. Sometimes I get “lost” in this new world and time simply flies by. It has been a special journey of discovery and learning.

My garden is truly a magical place to be. It's my escape to my own little world - my magical oasis.

that is a very nice harvest you have there my friend.
and yes, "why not" is a great answer, because you can grow your own good food at home, even in the city.
The small snail certainly want to conquer all, and the reproduce very quickly also.

Yes it is nice to grow some of my own good. The caterpillar camouflaged itself very well it was a challenge to find them. However I was persistent as you can see and had a lovely harvest. Thanks for your lovely comment.

You really have a lot of plants in your garden and it is blessed to grow well and healthy.

You have a plenty of harvest and I love those strawberries. We cans we strawberries here very seldom and they are so pricey.

Thank you @jenthoughts - I am so happy that things turned out well but it does take dedication.
Is it not possible to get strawberry plants even one? I have 32 plants from which I have removed baby plants. I had so many I could give some away as gifts. Please try to get at least one.

My god mother gave me strawberry plant before, I planted it, it grows but one day I woke up looking at it without any one flower. I don't know what ate it.

Woooowww what a beautiful orchard 😍😍 it really is as you mention "where there is a will there is a way" 👏👏👏👏.

I am amazed at how wonderful your experience has been despite living in an urban area you have a very productive little piece of countryside. Hey the strawberries look delicious and the potatoes are super big. You have done an excellent job.

My most sincere congratulations to you 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Many thanks @therneau - I managed and the results were very satisfying. Do you have a garden?

Not at the moment, no. I tried my hand at some veggies at a stage but wasn't diligent enough. Got some lovely tomatoes out of the experience though, but didn't trim it enough. Spinach got attacked by aphids. Perhaps I'll try again in future.

These are some nice looking harvest. Everything is so fresh, I wish I was your neighbour 😂.

You know I think I've said this before, but it's funny how you only started 3 years ago, and your username is Momogrow. Almost like it was predestined. Hehe

Sending you !PIZZA as weell.

Thank you @grindle - I truly found a satisfying hobby.
Lady bugs eat aphids - they do not proliferate if there are many ladybugs but I did not have r log them.
The concoction I made is very effective especially against the caterpillars on cabbages and pak soy.

This year I have only found one ladybird, ladybug as you call them, and that was yesterday, clearing out the annuals from the borders. ( they used to be here in abundance), But I had a whole host of Cinnabar moth caterpillars feasting on my broad leafed plants, little buggers!

How I wish I have such a space back at home to grow these amazing plants as well!
The most I could do at home is this 😅

Growing spring onions is good though - it is a start. If you have a small balcony you will be amazed what you can grow. I also have a balcony but it is spacious.

Hahaha yeah living in a small country like Singapore, you can only imagine the space constraint of my house!
But yeah, still happy with my results with the spring onions! 😅

One thing I usually enjoy a about your write-up is the way you write and your choice of words.

They're so enchanting and keeps the reader glue till the end, you'll make a great writer if you were to choose it as a profession.

You've got a lovely garden and looking at it, I don't know if I should only compliment or also say I'm jealous, but then I know I also need to put in great works to achieve such bountiful harvest.

I've been struggling with getting by peppers and tomatoes red, mostly fall off or spoils before it being red.

Overall you've got a magical hand and I'm glad you came out victorious over the pest.

Cheers. 🥂

Thanks for the nice compliment. I hope you can figure out what is happening to your tomatoes and peppers. Could it be too much sun or too little water?

Aww 🥰 I read this and remembered when I was in this phase of gardening, when it made me so utterly happy. I also feel the pull to start again next year. This year has been rather miserable without getting lost in my garden. With all the health issues I grew fearful of being outside, not knowing what might be cause my reactions. Thanks to yours and a few other people advice I am finally finding my ways back into feeling better and hoping to plant some new seeds this spring!

Do you ever grow things in your balcony garden during the cold season that we’re heading into now?

You have a beautiful harvest by the way. Might reach out for your pesticide recipes next season! 😁

You are welcome @fantagira It is understandable as you had other priorities.

I have kale in the garden - I might plant some more and also garlic and onions for the first time.
Sure - next season I will share the recipe when you are ready.

Ah kale 🥬 That healthy little bugger that I still haven’t trained my taste buds to tolerate 😂 I taught myself to tolerate celery, but kale I still can’t 😂
How do you eat your kale?
