Fun Fridays: Indulgences and idioms

It is a grey day - the rain is back. However, sometimes we need rain. I actually love the rain as long as it does not wreak havoc. I was walking around without an umbrella - getting wet. I wasn't feeling sorry for myself but just enjoying the rainfall.
As the good ole dutch idiom says,

Wij zijn toch niet van suiker

The literal english translation is, "We are not of sugar after all" but what it is really saying is that we are not going to dissolve or melt away.

Indeed, I did not melt. I then came across, "The Corner Bakery". I remember when it was all the rave. My daughter could not wait to go there with her best friend. It was trendy then and maybe it's still trendy for other teenagers. The Corner Bakery is a breakfast and lunch place but is opened until 4pm. There are lots of healthy options but there is also the decadent milk shakes which were hyped.

Freak shakes - photo made by my daughter

In the photo are the Hot Chocolate Freak Shake and the Vanilla Freak Shake. It is decorated with whipped cream, a donut on top which is covered with sprinkles and marshmallows. Freaky indeed!! How decadent and sugary!! It's a gimmicky food item that's fun and pretty to look at. The colourful presentation made it a great photo for teenagers Instagrams and other social media.

When my daughter showed me this photo, I told her it looked like heart attack food. However, (hopefully) no one eats like this every day, there is no need to eat it all or go there often either. The price might also be a deterrent for teens - each costs Euros 12.95. My daughter said they did not finish it. It does not matter because these type of indulgences should be consumed once in a lifetime. They were forewarned before they entered via this awning.

It reads, "Calories don't count when you're at Corner Bakery. The place to be for every Foodie".

Needless to say, my daughter and her friend left there feeling very happy and probably experiencing a sugar high. I can empathise 😀 - everytime that I have a capucinno and cake.

As you might guess from the photo - I did not indulge alone. It is nice to share and it is nice to have treats that releases feel good hormones - like serotonin.
As another dutch tells us,

Alles met mate

The english translation is "Everything in moderation".

Poem
I am reminded of a rhyming poem I wrote a while ago. It was frivolous and it makes me happy whenever I read it. It's aptly called -

Indulgences

Life is too short, so they say,
Thus, "Enjoy!" is my mantra every day.
"Little" indulgences I will allow,
The first of which is from cacao.

image.png

Chocolate is my sweet defeat,
It often beckons me to eat.
The dark variety is the main culprit,
Smooth, velvety, bittersweet - my favorite.

image.png

Of the next, I am not so proud,
But only because I become so loud.
Wobbly with wine but sometimes gin,
My over-consumption, some call a sin.

image.png

The last to which I will admit,
Is my early morning, caffeine fix.
I start to shake and can't say "No",
To a steamy cup of expresso!

I hope you enjoyed (vicariously) having milk shakes, coffee and cake with me. Once in a while, it is good to satisfy one's sweet tooth to avoid cravings or sneaking around and over-eating later. In addition, enjoying a nice treat certainly enhances one's mood.

Have a fabulous weekend.

Meedoen voor spek and bonen

The literal translation of this expression is - To participate for bacon and beans but it really means - I am participating for fun.😀

I enjoyed reading through and just like my mom would say whatever a child wants doesn't affect the child.

I am a foodie but not with sugar, it easily takes me down. I can tell you had a great time there, life is indeed short for us not to satisfy our cravings.

Happy weekend...

Oh but I did not have those milkshakes and the poem is just a poem. I do like a capuccino and a slice of cake however.
Have a good weekend.

That is a cheap price to pay for a heart attack but then again who wants a heart attack? ;<)
I do have a love hate relationship with sugar(y things). They only occasionally make me feel good.

P.S. I am enjoying the rain too, even more as it's fairly special in Portugal. Enjoyed a bit of it today, feeling it fall on my hair and face. Way more to come in the coming days and week(s), which is welcome as it was up to 30 degrees Celsius ( and some days warmer ), until yesterday.

Knuffel!

I am the same I do have a love hate relationship too. These items in my posts are just for fun. My daughter has not had another Freak shake - one was enough.
Thanks regarding the poem. It was hilarious to write - I am not really a drinker anyway and sugar has to be taken sparingly. I do enjoy dark chocolate though.

I can imagine that you thoroughly enjoy the rain when it visits. I cannot handle the heat for such long periods. That is why I do not complain about the Dutch weather. When I need more sun I go on vacation.

However you can jump in the river to cool off. 😀 Have a great time. Knuffel

When I need more sun I go on vacation.

I should probably go on vacation for more rain ;<)

And you're right, no matter what, I am always drawn to natural water, river, sea, lake ( this was already the case when I lived in The Netherlands ) so if it's too dry I just go for a swim or get my feet wet.

In fact, even on rainy days, I might dip my feet in the river ( unless there's thunder and lightning of course )

P.S. I get why your daughter wanted to try that shake.
That insane price sure helps to not overindulge in them,
aside from the stuiterbal after effects haha!

Knuffel!

People who love coffee the way you are and we are can't go a day without coffee and this cake looks super fun too.

I love sugary things but even I can admit that I wouldn't dare try this Freak shake.

I smiled a lot while reading this and even more when it got to the poem, which by the way is incredibly beautiful. You're really talented Momo, whether this was just a dabble at words or not.💜

haha - it certainly looks too much. A true sugar overload. I wonder if anyone can finish it?

@jhymi - thanks a lot for appreciating the poem. I am glad you enjoyed it. I had a good laugh when I wrote it. I had it share it with my family who wondered where I get my ideas from. I am not even a drinker. I love to write poetry but I do not do it that often. I think poetry is not appreciated. Thanks so much - I sent you a small token of my appreciation via Ecency points.

Haha, this is exactly like my daughter, she so much like sugar and sugary foods, I keep telling her that these sugars are accumulating inside of her, they can course some sicknesses, Ami right because I would not like her being sick ?.

Unfortunately you are right -sugar should be consumed in moderation. If a treat like this is not the norm but incidental- thenit is ok.

Yes balance is important. We already consume cards from so many sources - rice, pasta, potatoes, sauces, fruits, juices etc. As a result, we need to be mindful of the additional sugary items we add to our diet. In the long run as you know over eating sugar can cause diabetes and other issues.
No need for alarm though - all should be done in moderation - that is just a good rule to “eat” by.
