Overcoming the fear of the road [EN/PT]

Although I've had my license for almost ten years, one of my fears is still driving. Not exactly everywhere. In the cities I know, I can drive with ease, because I know what to do and where to go to get somewhere. But when it comes to big cities or towns I've never been to, I feel very insecure, which turns into fear.

There was one time when I had to face this fear of driving in an unfamiliar place. My ex-girlfriend traveled with her family to another state, and they stayed there for a few weeks. Before they left, my mother-in-law asked me for a favor: that I pick them up at the bus station when they arrived, because it was in a very distant city and there was no means of transport that would bring them at a time that coincided with their arrival at the bus station.

I agreed and said I would pick them up. The day before I had to do this, I was very anxious. It would be more than 150 kilometers one way and another 150 kilometers back. The problem wasn't the distance, but going to a city I'd never been to before, or rather, had never heard of. And to make matters worse, I would have to go alone, as the car needed all the space to accommodate them and their luggage on the way back. So not having a companion would be even worse, it was just me, God and the GPS heading into the unknown!

I had to wake up before the rooster crowed, it was around three o'clock in the morning, and I took my mother-in-law's car, as it was much more spacious than mine. I turned on the GPS, said a short prayer and set off. Along the way, I got a bit confused, as the GPS didn't always give me precise information about what to do on some of the more complicated parts of the road. I passed through beautiful towns, contemplated the sunrise and was impressed by some of the landscapes along the way, but fear and insecurity were still my companions in that car.

I managed to reach the place after a few hours and I thanked the heavens that nothing unexpected had happened. We got back all right. On the way back, I was more familiar with the road, and this time I had company, which gave me psychological comfort, and the fear had partially gone. I could have denied my mother-in-law help, I could have said that I was afraid of driving in places I didn't know well, but I decided to go, because this was a fear that had to be overcome. And I couldn't deny them this help, after all, I've already been helped a lot by them on other occasions.

The interesting thing was afterwards. I felt very proud of myself for having managed to overcome this fear. Perhaps, if you're used to taking to the road and driving for miles on your own, you think that my fear is something silly, but it's not. Each person has their own traumas for different reasons, and this is subjective.

After this trip, I was able to feel a little more secure and discovered that I can overcome some fears. But I can tell you that it wasn't easy, especially at the beginning. Over time, I ignored the feeling and focused on what I had to do. This was a good method for overcoming the first moments of tension and anxiety, and I use it when I have to face other situations in which fear surrounds me.

I think situations like this are very important to help us overcome obstacles and situations outside our comfort zone. Of their own free will, hardly anyone would do things they are afraid of, so these are good opportunities to take advantage of in order to overcome and evolve in some aspects of our lives. I can say that today I'm more confident to face challenges like this one!

At some point we need actions of such nature @michupa. Being able to face our fears can be the most difficult thing to do, but it is in some cases the right thing to do...

Indeed, it wasn't easy at all, but everything turned out fine in the end, and today I'm less afraid of facing something similar!

I equally had this fear of going to big cities for the first time even though I do not drive, so I know exactly that feeling you must have been feeling. Sometimes we just need to try once, and we would overcome our fears. Thanks for sharing boss

Maybe it's just fear of the unknown, maybe it's something natural for some people. But I can't deny it's a pain!

Some are very obvious and others you have to think about a bit. It could be #life or #lifestyle. Or also #life #emotions, although it's just an opinion.

Use the one that makes the most sense and is related to the topic of the article.

I want to drive car but every time my fear controls me and I cannot drive with my all nerve. Whenever I put my hand on steering anxiety takes me off. It's high time for me to learn driving but I am just overwhelmed by the anxiety and stress.
