FREEDOM OR NOT. SHOULD YOU SPEAK?

While I ponder around thinking about what to write about the subject matter. I immediately realized that its a controversial issue and my opinion will solely be based on facts.

It is expected to know that freedom of speech is a fundamental right that belongs to all humans as a citizen of the world. Unfortunately, the freedom of speech we claim is in itself not truly freedom as the case may be. This is common in almost every part of the world from what we see.

For instance in my country Nigeria, you must be extremely extra super careful in altering words during conversation in public places. This could be in a media channel, dignitaries meeting, public gathering, or any type of gathering that will get to alot of eyes and ears either during or after the meeting. This is due to the fear that has been instilled in us to ever say anything that will come after an authority figure.

Come to think of it. If I have the freedom of feeding, why should I be afraid to eat? If I have the freedom of ownership, why should I be afraid to buy a car or house? And if I have the freedom of speech, why should I be careful to speak? All because I'm afraid of an authoritative government.

It Should Be What It Should Be

I know this may be counterintuitive. But if we go by the real definition of freedom then this might make some more meaning.

Now the human nature is dynamic. It is the reason why we are able handle the same issues separately. It is the reason why some certain speech will break and mar one fellow and the same speech will elevate the other. It is why we fully cannot attribute some type of speech to be harmful or not. It is why some words are disrespectful and others are not. And more importantly, why there is a need to reminisce upon an issue before pondering it out as words from the mouth.

Speech and expression alone has led to different sort of violence among people of the society, among couples, friends and family members. So beyond being afraid of some authoritative measures by the government, domestic violence is another headache that freedom of speech brings to us.

Another good one is the opportunity this freedom has brought to young people to be outspoken among their colleagues for those who are able to freely express themselves from a tender age. It gives them the ability to not be intimidated which is a good source of depression for people today.

In Conclusion

There might be the fear of expressing oneself for so many reasons. But whichever way it is I feel the ability to control how you feel towards some kind of speech should be prioritized by individuals. That way we won't come after people so hard for expressing themselves because they are at liberty to do so.

Nigeria you have to be very careful of what you say, the funny part is that even if you're not careful someone beside will tap you to do so.

Like seriously it's safer to remain mute than even engaging in a fight. You will just be cautioned by all means. And if you disobey, you're to blame for whatever comes out of it.

I must admit that I love your approach to this matter. This is really a subject of argument and everybody is entitled to his/her opinion. My take on the issue is for us to respect the fact that we can speak when we know the fact (and that is if we feel like speaking) and not speak carelessly all in the name of freedom of speech. The belief in the freedom of speech has made many people talk aimlessly and at the end found guilty of defamation of character. Of course, we are free to talk, but it's left for us to think twice before we vomit words. I love you, bro.

Thank you for your contribution. I just wish it can be put in another expression than the word freedom in it. Because what's the freedom there in altering words that will eventually get you into trouble. But not withstanding it is what it is. So we accept it the way we see it.

I like the part where you said the control of speech is paramount
Even if we have freedom to soeak it does not give us the right to say things as they are not ought to be said.

Nice post

Freedom is meant to be for everyone and not just for one person alone.

I like your point of view, and how you explained the subject.
We must learn to control ourselves and say things rightly, only when they are needed.
Nice one dear

Yes this is important because freedom of speech is not 100% freedom. If we can live by this fact, there will be lesser issues with the subject matter.

We have freedom to speak but now to some extent. We still have some limitations because you cannot use your own to disturb someone's privacy. The way you speak to people should vary because we have elders among us. So, the freedom of speech is not just speech but to err your views at all cost but not to speak to people rudely.

Exactly.. there is need to respect other's opinion and personality while addressing issue via speech. This is why freedom of speech in it's entirety is not freedom.
