Lessons learned... More are on the way.

The idea of learning from experience is one of the things that allow people to have a better understanding of themselves, their environment, and other people around them. There are lessons to be learned from each day of our life. Life itself is a good example of that because as long as we are alive, we will always encounter a series of things that will help us become better in several areas of our lives

In this post, we will be looking at 2023 and the lessons learned from this year. The year itself is already coming to an end and it would be a pity to have spent the whole of this year without learning any important lesson.

I will speak for myself; I learned a lot this year! Yeah, and I make no bones about that.

Here is a highlight of some of the lessons I learned this year.

1. The best time is NOW when investing in real assets.

There was a time when I knew I needed a new laptop and I knew I had the 180k to get a decent laptop. But, just because I felt like I would be wasting money on a laptop when I can try doing stuff with my phone, I delayed getting the laptop for a whole year. In addition to that, there was a software I was supposed to study and it could only be done with a laptop.

Just because I was being very conscious of money, I ended up not learning how to use that software. I finally got the laptop a few months ago at a price that is very high due to the effect that inflation has had on the market between last year and this year. I'm now starting afresh to study the software. I'm very sure I would have monetized the skill beyond measure if I got the laptop when I needed it in 2022.

One of the things I learned from that experience is that when there is a need and the means to take care of that need is available, it's best to settle that need as soon as possible. A little delay will likely turn into a disadvantage for us, especially in this era of consistent inflationary pressure.

2. Dialogue is still the best approach to conflict resolution.

There has been no shortage of conflicts in my dealing with people this year. Some of them come up directly and some get tied up to me indirectly. It can be exhausting to face all that, but there is also a lot that can be learned from that.

One of the biggest lessons I learned about this is to always come face to face when there is a misunderstanding with someone and dig around to see what the hell is causing the conflict or misunderstanding. It's always a tough discussion to have and I got into a lot of that because it's never about who's right or wrong.

Choosing to resolve misunderstandings through dialogue makes it easier to understand each other and that helps those involved to know the best way to act around each other.

2023 so far has sure been an interesting learning experience. I'm glad for the lessons learned and I'm looking forward to what 2023 will throw on my path.

Thanks For Not Missing Any Full-stop or Comma.

I do find myself in this situation too...we have the money but we keep believing the future holds the best and we will always achieve it some other time, forgetting that not everything seem as it is. Things change and life happen, I guess the inflation took everyone by surprise.

I remember wen hubby wanted to buy a washing machine last year but we keep procrastinating it and today it has double or triple in price due to inflation, I just wish we got it last year wen things were a little better.

Life is a lesson itself we keep learning everyday of our life.

Nice piece! Thank you. 😊

That's true. Inflation is one of the things we need to have in mind when considering spending on things especially when we need to spend on things we consider very important.

As far as Nigeria is concerned, the earlier we get those things, the better for us. It also gives us enough time to enjoy the thing we bought. Hehe

This made me to remember when my friend want to buy a refrigerator. They told him it was 150k. He went home thinking they will call him back to buy it at a cheaper price. The upper week, he went back to that place and he was told it was now 185k. He cried as he was paying the money.

That's very relatable. At this very moment, once I notice that something is going to serve a good purpose for me, I try as much as possible to get it as soon as I have the money.

Delaying can cause more harm than good.

When there is an opportunity to do something, we shouldn't delay doing that because there is possibility that things may turn south which would have been better if we had done it earlier. There are so many lessons we learned this year and it's enough to put them into practice so as not to repeat same errors.

That's so true, Princess. There is always something to learn from life and we can learn as much as possible if we pay good attention to the things we go through each day.

Of course, unless you are targeting a promotion during a festive season then it’s really not advisable to postpone buying things in this economy.

Exactly. Also, I've noticed that the so-called Black Friday Sales are not sold at a discount. They just have a market-driven marketing strategy that makes it seem like we are buying at 50% discount. Haha

The best time is NOW when investing in real assets.

We all suffer from FOMO from time to time. It's ok.

Investing in yourself, family and friends is always a good idea, I think.
Investing time or money in skills is a good way of not missing out, in the long run.
Investing in a device with a bigger screen and a keyboard, such as a laptop, is in my opinion essential to create good content (on Hive especially). I don't understand how people do that on their phone tbh. Trying to write anything on phone drives me crazy.
But then again, I grew up with computers and never bothered learning anything on the phone. Typing without keyboard simply does not work for me and is frustrating. Even reading on a phone screen is torture.

Choosing to resolve misunderstandings through dialogue makes it easier to understand each other and that helps those involved to know the best way to act around each other

That is generally true...
If the other party is only in it to win a debate and not to find out the truth, it can be best to do the opposite though; When I feel like I am not getting through to the other person and they just want to go into endless debates, I quit.

The hard part is to recognize whether it's about truth or ego, and sometimes it's hard to leave your own ego out of it.

Good luck on your journey of self improvement!

Thanks so much for coming to share your thoughts on this post.

Some expenses have proven to be more of an investment than mere expenses. A good example is the deep freezer I bought recently. I had to get that because the cost of feeding is becoming more expensive over here and because I live alone, I don't usually have enough time to go cooking every day of the week.

I decided to get that deep freezer. I spent a fortune to get it a month ago and I now cook in huge quantities, have it stored in the deep freezer, and get some to warm when I'm hungry. It just saves me a good amount of feeding money. Maybe that's just what I want to believe. Haha. Inflation is hitting us hard.

Trying to write anything with a phone drives me crazy.

Haha. I'm not surprised. I've heard people say that many times but that's not always the case over here. I never touched a laptop until a few years ago when I was already an adult. Up to this very moment, I do most of my typing with my phone. Any attempt to get into a chat with someone while typing on the laptop will be a very frustrating experience. Haha. I will average a ridiculously few amount of words per minute.

As life goes on, lessons are definitely learnt unless to those who are ignorant.
Whenever I have the money to get what I need, I dare not hesitate to do so. With the rate of inflation in this country of ours, procrastination is a no-no for me.

I also agree that conflicts are best resolved when the parties express themselves through their words in the presence of each other. I myself prefer using my spoken words to texting or even speaking over phone.

Sorry about the laptop case. I even forgot to ask about the one you were repairing, but thank God you got a good one to help you do a lot online. I think procastinaton is it. There is need to go for what you need if you have the means, nothing can get cheaper anymore 😅, buy what you have to if you have the means. 😅

As per settling disputes ameacably, it remains the best. Oftentimes people push us to the wall but we will achieve a lot if we remain calm and iron out issues.

The one I wanted to repair was irreparable. The motherboard was nowhere to be found. It was even sent to Lagos and still no show.

I sold the scrap for 60k though so it didn't entirely go to waste. Haha.
