Eating Out In Ibadan: It doesn't get easy, does it?

A lot of times whenever I'm free, I prefer to walk into my kitchen and do the cooking. I like to cook what I eat and I'm a sucker for a nicely made meal. I'm also quite picky about what I eat and I pay special attention to the hygiene of the server, the sanitary condition of the eatery/restaurant and stuff like that.

Aside from those things which are external factors, I prefer to eat from the best possible eatry where I can get a sumptuously made meal. And, that's exactly where it gets quite complicated because it costs a fortune to eat in such places and I can't afford to do that every day of the week.

Hah! Haha!

It doesn't get easy, does it?

I've read a few interesting literature on nutrition and dietetics and I've thought of doing what I can do to maintain a fairly decent nutrient intake. But, I'm just a young chap who lives alone with a very busy schedule. This warrants that there are times when I just can't afford (time or energy-wise) to prepare the exact thing I want to eat.

In such situations, eating out becomes an option that's worth considering. And, I believe I've tried getting food from more than 90% of the food vendors or restaurants that are within proximity. I don't mean to be salty, but I'm not gonna lie... The good is usually not as good as I want. It's either not spicy enough or too salty.

There is this particular vendor I can bet that even if I walk into her spot this very moment and buy Jollof or fried rice, it will surely be salty. Wow! And people are still rushing the food. I keep wondering if my taste buds is to be blamed, but it has happened a little too much. So, I'm sure that's just how she likes to make her food.

Also, I've noticed that there is nothing 'fried' about most of the so-called 'fried rice' they sell around here. It's just a glorified Jollof rice made with veggies (mostly carrot) and curry powder without adding tomatoes. My eyes cannot accept a fried rice of that quality and I can't swallow it. Haha.

To be fair, I've been able to spot two fairly decent restaurants where I can get fairly decent meals. If you are in Ibadan (Nigeria), check out;

  • Omak Foodmattaz which is opposite the main gate of the University of Ibadan. Their meals are expensive, no doubt about that. But, it has decent quality.

  • Another wonderful restaurant I visit is Weste Grill Restaurant, very close to Bodija market in Ibadan. Their food isn't as expensive as the one from Omak, but I would have to add the cost of transportation if I'm going to this place.

Meals from these places are edible. Hehe. And, I reached this conclusion after being to more than 20 different food vendors or restaurants. So, you can count on my recommendation.

What about y'all?

What's your experience with eating out in your area?

Thanks For Not Missing Any Full-stop Or Comma.

I've been to Ibadan several times, hygiene has been one of the reasons why I never bought or ate anything there. However, there surely would be decent eateries close the UI itself. Maybe it's time to dust my shoes one day and visit Ibadan again.

I hope you can speak Yoruba because the last time I was there those people oppressed me with their language 😢

I can speak Yoruba perfectly, I'm yet to master the accent, but I can also write too, I did it in my diploma days.

You are spot-on. The hygiene issue is a really big one. The day I saw where they were making fries, the whole environment wasn't pleasant at all. They were using unclean water to wash the potato they wanted to fry. Omoh... I couldn't place a buy order. Haha.

I've been to a few places around Ibadan and I think U.I, mostly because it's an area for students and young lads, is fairly decent in comparison to some other parts of Ibadan.

Thanks for sharing your recommendations. We do not really eat out that often so have not tried many of the local places, but we have a Persian restaurant nearby that does the best food (and rice) so I do like to go there when possible for a special occasion or to meet friends who also like spicey food.

Thanks so much. Hehe. I've always wanted to try some Asian meals and I know there are done Chinese restaurants in Nigeria, but I'm not completely sure if there is anyone within close proximity to my area. Hehe

If I ever find one, I will surely check that out. Haha

Everyone have their special unique qualities in life, Turns out yours is prevalent in your hygiene and food among others you might also have.

Your unique taste quality is natural, probably also groomed in upbringing, one can't really judge those who eat anything that comes their way.

Exactly. That's why I don't think too much about what goes on out there. If the need arises, I know where to get a food that is fairly decent. However, if when I make out time for it, I'm sure I can also prepare any meal to my taste. Hehe.

when i used to be on the road I ate out a lot... but now that I am home most of the time I hardly eat out. My siblings cook for me.

When I was in Ibadan I cooked my meals. I hardly ate out, mainly because I think eating out is expensive.

Speaking about eateries, there are fairly decent ones in lagos. I have my regular spots where I get the best money can buy at an affordable rate. These fancy restaurants are just ripping people off and their food ain't so great.

That's cool, Bro. If I ever go home to where my family stay, eating out never entice me. Not when I can eat sumptuously made meals at home. Haha.

Most of the eatries in this place are not good enough. I remember when I visited Badagry few months ago. Their eatries are so much better and surprisingly cheaper. Haha. I never knew I could get food that cheap in any part of Lagos.

If you want to eat something with perfect taste then you need to go to the kitchen and cook for your own. Otherwise, you need to cost a good amount of money for good quality food.
In my case, I face a busy time. I cook only when my family members go outside, especially in the village. But this time I need to cook food even though everyone is here because, except me and my father, everyone is sick(fever). My cooked food was good in taste and it was satisfying. So go to the kitchen and cook food😅 for the perfect taste.

😂😂😂... You need to cook every food you can think of and make it very delicious so that the sick people around you would have something to eat. Haha.

As for me, it rained so much today so I decided to cook rice and a spicy tomatoes stew. Haha. It was so sumptuous 😂

No. I don't like eating out. It cost so much. I just eat out in the city for a very important transactions but just after the transaction done. If it won't go through, I'll just starve and eat at home hahaha

Lol... Sometimes, people eat out based on necessity. Haha. Seems like you are one of those that eat out when it's absolutely important to do so. Hehe.

For me, I eat out often, but I prefer something that is home cooked. Hehe. So, I also cook a lot especially on weekends because that's when I'm usually free to play around in the kitchen.

Ibadan is a lovely place. I have been there three or four times. These days I prefer eating home-cooked meals to outside food, to me I see it as a waste of money eating outside.

Yeah. Ibadan is actually cool and I like the calmness of the city.

Everyone is just minding their own business and trying as much as possible to make ends meet without stepping on people's toes. Hehe.

I love that you consider hygiene while visiting restaurants. I also know that you love nice delicacies well prepared 😉...no wonder your fresh skin bro 😂
However, I think eating out is more expensive but I know it's not something you do all the time. I trust Ur creativity in your kitchen...the upcoming husband material..lolz

Hahah... Yes ooooo. The thing about most of the places I've tried eating is that I go once and never feel like going navj again. In most cases, I just get snack and make due with that. Haha.

Food is really expensive here. Cooking is a better option. It also makes it easier to cook something I can chew. Haha.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this ooooo.

There are certain food vendors that should be closed down because what is it with all the salt? Hehe

I take my food hygiene seriously too and eating in is always the best option for me. But on days when I have no iota of strength, I visit the food vendors.

Came in through #dreemport.

Hahah... My dear ooooo. It's not easy. Food vendors are just doing what's they like. And they keep doing that because no matter how they present it, people will always patronize them. Haha

It's not easy. Welcome, Dreemer.

Enjoy your recipe dear!

Really after life is... eating good food to help give nutritional facts to the body, I love good food too...a foodie to be exact.
And yes I can testify to poor looking and testing food since I'm also a student of university of uyo, as you said it's either there's no enough spicy or it's over spiced up that you can't eat...and my tummy suffers the most. I love good food so I prefer eating at home...or a friend's house, we just go to the market and get what we want and it's a meal you don't just eat one day...it could last longer then eating poorly from restaurant and it's so expensive. But I still take some good time to explore like here... heard from a friend to try April celebration. Food there is kinda affordable. 🦋🥰

That's the thing about food. As far as we are alive, the feed to eat will always be there. However, for someone to eat something that is really well made, very good attention has to be paid to the food.

A food that doesn't tick a lot of box will subsequently be similar to poison. Haha. At this point, the best we can do is to prepare most of what we eat. That gives everyone the chance to cook it in a way that will suit thw person's taste.

Just like you said, cooking what we eat is also cheaper.

Yes! I agree with you a million percent on this, first we need to use open eyes to watch what we eat, but I prefer also cooking, it's much more affordable and you can cook it to you taste, not just that you still have leftovers for another time. I love food, so if you want to capture my heart you know the key right now..hehehe, (kidding 😂) you don't have too.

Thanks for responding back. I would love to ask you something though. Can we chat on discord maybe..🦋😊

Except otherwise, else, it is far better to prepare our meals ourselves than go out there to buy. Apart from the fact that it saves money, Some food vendor are really mean, they don't care about hygiene and still cook meals that are not even worth the money. I won't blame them though, humans are very selfish in nature.

I believe There are many good restaurants out there. I am not condemning restaurants and if you love buying food, please go on , there's nothing wrong with it . I wish I am around Ibadan so I could check the ones you listed above out.

You are on point bro. Even if someone isn't a good cook, the least expected from anyone that runs food business should be for him/her to do the bare minimum required to maintain good hygiene.

The thing about food is that while it is meant to help nourish the body, it can easily turn to a poisonous substance if it isn't handled properly. That's exactly why I'm very conscious of the hygiene whenever I'm buying food.

The best bet would always be to cook what I want and to cook it the way I enjoy it.
