Admitting that there is a problem... Problem Solving.

benjamin-zanatta-WbkfJ2TmSug-unsplash.jpg

When I think of the negative emotions and experiences I've had to go through in life so far, it takes me back to moments when I was very close to giving up and calling it quits. Those sort of moments have been punctuating my life for so long to the point where it feels like coming face to face with undesirable situations has become part of my existence.

Truth be told, facing problems is part of our existential phenomena. Is it something I enjoy experiencing? Nah! I would rather not have to deal with pain, problems, disappointment and other negative experiences. However, I can't deny the fact that these things happen and when they come at you, one of the things you can do for yourself is to admit that you are in trouble and that the trouble is a serious one.

I made a mistake about that when I lost my laptop during my school days. The laptop was surprisingly stolen in a church. Seriously, losing my laptop in a church premises is something I never thought would happen. However, it happened and that shows how a lot of things which are supposed to be sacred are no longer treated as such.

After losing the laptop which had the first 3 Chapters of my academic project report, I spent the next couple of days living in denial of the issue at hand. For some reason, I chose to convince myself that "this isn't a big deal" and that "the thief will return it". I didn't inform my parents about that immediately. I kept them in the dark about it and spent too much time trying to convince myself that it will get returned.

Well, it never got returned and I still had a project report to work on and submit. This time around, I didn't have enough time for it and I also didn't have all the resources I needed.

Whenever I look back to that moment and the way I handled the situation, I always wonder if there is something I could have done better.

  • Would it have been better to immediately admit that something is wrong and let my parents know that I'm in a mess?

  • What if I went back to my lodge and started redoing my academic research report immediately instead of hoping for my stolen laptop to be returned?

Those are the things I lack answers for. What I know is that it still feels like the moment I spent in doubt and in naive optimism played a part in compounding the negative experience I had back then. Now, whenever I'm facing an unfavorable situation, I sit back to look into it and ask "What on earth is going on?"

daria-nepriakhina-zoCDWPuiRuA-unsplash.jpg

That's the same approach I took when my finances took a huge hit in January. I looked into it and it was obvious that this is a big mess. So, the first thing I did was to recognize that "there is a big financial issue here". Admitting that made it easier for me to think of ways to make things better.

To be fair, I'm still in the process of figuring out how to improve my finances. What I've been able to achieve by admitting that I'm going through a financial drama was to readjust my expenses. Now, I'm not too worried about my upcoming rent or the money to cover my expenses for the first half of the year.

This doesn't suggest that I've solved the problem. The problem is still on. However, I'm learning and exploring opportunities that would hopefully make it easier for me to fix the problem.

In case you got lost somewhere in the post, the message is that when we notice we have a problem and admit that there is a problem, making an effort to learn what we can do to solve that problem increases our chance of solving that problem.

Thanks For Not Missing Any Full-stop or Comma.

I would say that you were only being optimistic and didn't want to feel overwhelmed by losing something so important in your life at that time. But then, you should have acted faster. It's all understandable nonetheless. I agree that one should not be in denial that they are in a difficult situation as that really wouldn't help situations.

Yeah, bro. I think the problem with my reaction back then is that I ended up pushing the optimism to an extreme. Haha. That made it a naive optimism on my part.

At the moment, when I see a problem, I edge more towards understanding the issue learning how to solve it.

Each experience gives us lessons that we can take advantage of in the future. I hope you continue to solve it and leave it behind soon. 😊

We learn from our mistakes, it's sad how things are, imagine losing your laptop in a church premises. That's pathetic. Well, it's good to admit there's a problem rather than living in self-denial, that's one step to fixing it.

I popped in from Dreemport because I am an awesome #dreemerforlife.

That's true, Amie. Losing a laptop or any valuable possession is a very sad experience, especially when it's stolen in a place of worship.

I wonder why people steal wherever they get an opportunity to do so

The thing is if we get life easy we won’t grow and also we won’t develop. We will become useless and that’s one reason for underdevelopment in Africa, we do not have enough challenges to keep us on our toes. Each challenge or dark night as it is called in spirituality is a phase which prepares us to be a better version of ourselves. Just like we go to school we study, we write exams and we pass that’s how it is with life challenges. An exam failed becomes a carry over similarly we keep facing challenges we fail to learn from and congratulations for having learning one of the major life hack to over coming challenges which is changing of attitude. By accepting the problem, it gives you the sense of thinking out solutions. The problem doesn’t go away but it is your attitude towards it that changed making you rise above the challenges. Thank you for sharing.

Awesome. This is a great take and a thoughtful input to the experience shared in the post. I agree with the things you said and I've learned to also change the attitude I display when faced by such challenges.

I concur with what you said about our chances of experiencing growth due to challenging situations.

Sincerely, I can relate with your perfect submission here.

When a problem is too big, accepting the reality becomes difficult. The shock would be too huge to absorb and think of a way forward.

It needs a great level of courage and some times counseling to get one to accept the reality and finding solution to it.

I got some tips from you. Thank you for sharing.

I think the fact that you learned from that hard experience of losing your laptop is the silver-lining to such a difficult situation. And that's really all we can do in the difficult situations, isn't it? We look for the gold - the lesson that we can take further in life. I hope your current situation eases. Thank you for a lovely, thoughtful post. E x

Thanks so much. I genuinely appreciate getting your thoughts on this.

The experience of losing my laptop back then was a very tough one because I was not in a situation where I could have it replaced. Thankfully, I got to learn a lot from that experience.

I 100% agree with you. Procrasting and not taking immediate steps forward would only make things worst.

True. When life throws these things on our path, we can always learn lessons from that experience. That's something I've also learned over the years

Very well written @kenechukwu97 I could feel your journey through these troubles.

I agree with your conclusion. The main problem though is the kind of person we are. Our first destination that the brain will take us to is always going to be in line with who we are. We can of course through practice create the next step of moving away from the default position to a more active one.

I am a think before you jump person. For the larger strategic points in life this helps a lot. Even when sudden fires happen I am good at resolving them without a moment's thought cause I work on auto just resolving one issue after another. So when I have a long distance activity or I have an absolutely urgent matter, in both these cases I tick well. However for medium distance activity where I need to quickly take action I end up procrastinating. It might be something I don't have enough info about. Or something that will not make everyone happy. I will waste time trying to work out the best possibility and by the time I find that we have already lost time. Luckily for me, in my life I have my wife, who is act before thinking person. So for most important things she pushes ahead and does not allow me to get stuck up in my own thinking.

To the final message in your post I will just add one more thing - actually verbalize or physically write down the problem. It is a whole different feel when you speak out or write down your problem rather than keep it in your head.

Thank you for making me think about this. Good subject and well written.

Wow... Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this. I genuinely appreciate it and I'm glad you also shared a tip on how to understand problems and subsequently come up with solutions.

Writing down or verbalizing a problem is something I would like to give a shot. I know that problems will always come our way at certain points in life and I want to be able to create solutions for each of these problems.

Thanks so much. This is an approach I've learned to take towards problem-solving due to the series of experiences I've had in the past.

At the moment, I always want to be able to solve problems ASAP.
