🥷 Srey-Yuu 🔪 Cambodian Sugarcane Peeler Extraordinaire 🤯

VBNM.png

We recently came into possession of some sugarcane, but @sophea and @sakana aren't strong enough to make quick work of peeling it.

⛑️ Big Sister To The Rescue 🛟

Sugarcane juice is by far the tastiest way to enjoy this fruit grass, but we don't have a press. The next best option is to shave it and cut it into cubes, then chew and suck on it until the flavor is gone. It is hard to work to peel sugarcane if you don't have specific kind of thin knife basically made just for this purpose.

We have only normal kitchen knives, so for anyone peeling sugarcane like this, it takes a bit of muscle to use such a thick knife for shaving off the outer layer. Luckily 14-year-old girl muscles are adequate for such a mission, so cheers to Srey-Yuu for her ninja-esque knifery.

Sugarcane Draws A Crowd 👯‍♀️

If you were expecting a very engaging post about things other than this sugarcane getting peeled, well I'm sorry to let you down. The last few days I've been doing too much house-husbanding to have time to make a post. Cooking, cleaning, and fathering tend to not allow much time for anything else, and ASEAN Hive duties always come before my personal blog posts.

Watch It Fall 👇

PPPPPP.png

One of the best parts of both eating and peeling sugarcane on the veranda is that you get to throw the discarded bits over the edge and watch them fall. I don't know why this super simple thing is so fascinating, but it just is. Anytime I have a fruit rind or some veggie scraps to discard, I love tossing them over the edge, especially when some of the bits are light enough to take flight with the wind. I guess what I'm saying is that when you live in the middle of nowhere it's quite easy to be entertained.

That's an interesting skill Srey-yuu have! :D And yes, life in the country is simple yet fun. I miss living in such a place where people feel happy and enjoy even the simplest of things... Also, can I have some sugarcane? haha

We have a couple areas on our property with sugarcane growing, you are welcome to cut and shave all you want, haha. Perhaps someday there will be an ASEAN Hive bungalow that any of you can come stay in should you choose to visit Cambodia. The ASEAN Hive HBD Savings account is nearly $1,500 USD, and with perhaps $500 to $1,000 more, we'll have enough to build an actual ASEAN Hive bungalow and make it free for ASEAN Hivers.

I miss sipping the pure organic sugar cane in our farm.

I prefer drinking it over chewing and sucking because sugarcane is so hard and full of sharp fibers that sometimes cut my mouth.

Hahaha, so funny and I miss those memories in our farm, we kept on sipping and sucking the trunk that caused pain to my mouth and tongue.

Haha, you know the feeling. Apparently I am weak for sugarcane, but I can eat a whole pineapple, no problem, but my family can't because it burns their tongues 🤣

We love the veranda, and I dare it's the best view of anywhere I've ever been in Cambodia.

If you had a li'l bridge nearby you could make it a 'Pooh stick' game?
Remember that?

not to be confused with 'poo stick' games

The name rings a bell, but I had to google it. I did watch Winnie the Pooh as a kid, and I remembered the term, but had totally forgotten how it worked. My boat/duck racing idea might eventually become Poohsticks, the trial run recently proved that wind can stop the boats from traveling downriver even though almost nothing sits above the surface.

I also don't have the patience, I just wait until I see a moto sidecar with a sugarcane press and I buy the juice. The smallest cup of iced sugarcane juice costs 1,000r here, about 25 cents USD. What does it cost where you are?
