🧼 River Showers With Monkey-B, & Veggie Burgers Too πŸ”

showers.png

Today was super hot, and after nearly 7 hours inside a steamy tuk-tuk driving, working and waiting, I needed a shower at the river, and Monkey-B joined me.

Rain + Heat + Confined Space πŸ₯΅

Β  Β  Β The month is almost over and I will soon no longer be taking 8 kids to and from school each day. It may not sound like a big deal , but it consumes me 6 days a week from 5:20am until the afternoon, so it's nearly a full-time job on top of an already full schedule. I'll be glad for the extra time, but also not looking forward to paying my neighbor $200 a month for the service because that's about what my wife earns with her blog each month, and I had originally bought the moto for her to take the kids to school, so no we're out the cost of a moto and monthly transport expenses.

Stinky Bodies To The River 🦨

trew.png

Β  Β  Β Another reason I'll be glad to stop taking the village kids to school is that their parents never paid a fair share. One could argue that they are poor and have pity on them because they live in small houses, but the truth is these parents have plenty of money to gamble, drink, smoke, and a few of them even purchased new $3,000 motos while not paying me enough to cover diesel costs. I don't want to continue freeing up more money for alcohol, so I hope the kids will eventually learn to criticize their parents for failing to accept parental responsibilities.

Β  Β  Β On this day I didn't really want to swim, just needed a show because I had been sweating a lot in the tuk-tuk while waiting for the kids. As usual, we took soap, the bathroom scoop, and a washcloth to the river for our natural shower. The rainy season is tapering off and the river is becoming more friendly, so we are taking advantage of the situation.

You First 🧼

swty.png

Β  Β  Β Because we generally take one of everything, the showers usually consist of one of us playfully berating the other for taking too long. We had been standing on the downed tree that plunged our hammock hut into the river, but on this day Monkey-B wanted to try showering directly in the river.

soap.png

Β  Β  Β She's mastered the one-legged technique and the squat dunk, but still needs help when her face is full of suds. We've all been there, face full of suds blindly reaching for the ladel, desperately trying to find the water basin for a scoop, or perhaps you just step in front of the showerhead if you have running water.

We Do Have Running Water 🚰

saka.png

Β  Β  Β Technically we do have running water I guess, just not from a pipe and not anywhere near the house, also known as a river. If we had installed running water and a hot water shower when we first moved here we'd have missed out on all these dad-daughter adventures to the river. The river is a special place where Monkey-B and I bond and spend time together just the two of us, and this often sparks interesting conversations about life.

soapy.png

Β  Β  Β The above shot is a typical one, Monkey-B is done with the rag and soap and wants me to take it from her. She wanted to experiment with a new hair-washing technique, so I stood back and watched, hoping she wouldn't tip over like a barrel.

Post-Swim Veggie Burgers πŸ”

dert.png

Β  Β  Β After we got back up to the house, I made my (humble brag) legendary kofta veggie burgers, and you can see that my Monkey-B was ecstatic about the afterschool activities and eats. I did make 5 burgers and only toasted 4 buns, some bad math brought on from too little sleep.

sandwichb.png

Β  Β  Β I put the burger on an untoasted bun and you can see that our youngest food critic was not very happy with this decision. Lucky for me her attempt s at the stare of death usually descend into laughter and cheekiness. Alright, it's 3:04 am, and I thankful to not have to wake up in 2 hours and takes the kids to school, so good night/morning all.

It was also smoldering hot here in my part of the country and I expect rain later in the evening. I do hear thunder coming from afar, but no rain yet.

A dive in your backyard pool would be a welcome one.

The weather here can be pretty extreme, so the river is only safe 50% of the time, but hard to beat on a hot sunny day.

It didn't rain that day/night. Today it was grey outside from the moment I woke up and it drizzled a bit but not a rainstorm. Could be different in another part of the country.

We do miss some blackwater adventures in Suriname but if I have a choice, I want to see all the way to the bottom of the river πŸ˜‰.

Hihihi I like the blackwater creeks for that cold rush and to relax those muscles, but I would also like to see what's swimming in my vicinity πŸ˜…. Snorkeling is also a fun activity in clear water.

Bathing in the river is something very pleasant,Especially after we are tired and sweaty like you said Especially with the river water which is very cool and clean.
It's rainy season where we are.

We are just now finishing the rainy season here, so now the river is clean and peaceful and we are trying to swim every day possible.

It's great to see your daughter playing so nicely in the river water, children are really innocent. And they enjoy everything in their life.

Yes, the river is the number one reason we chose to settle here, and it doesn't cost a penny to swim.

Growing up around natural spaces is so important, and I hope because of this place my daughters will always have a respect for nature.

Oh, yum, the veggie burgers look so good! And I see you have Tabascoβ„’ sauce over there, too! πŸ˜ƒ

Tabasco is one of those things we can buy only when visiting the capital or other big cities, but I never forget it, and that reminds me our bottle is empty now πŸ™.

It seems gambling is rampant in your area. It's similar to alcohol in ours. 😁

Btw, I wonder if you are able to catch some fish on the river? Traditional fishing for me is kind of relaxing. 😊

Social decay comes in many forms. There is a bit of fish in the river, particular the fish used in the tourist "fish massage" tanks, the little fish that pluck dead skin off your feet. Apparently these fish are good to eat, at least the local soldiers all catch and eat them. We are vegan, so we don't eat the fish, but I guess the fish do eat us a little each time we swim πŸ˜‰.

Ohh. Now I know. That's why you never talked about fishing even though you are very close to the river. 😊
Maybe you can let them clean your feet why you work on the computer. Just don't don't overdo it or you might look down and then noticed that your whole feet is gone. LOL. 😁

Haha, now I'm having flashbacks of Suriname where the resorts on the river has crocodile-proof swimming fences, and hungry piranhas occasionally take a bite or two. I guess the massage fish are a lot less threatening than the dangers of the Amazon.

LOL. I only saw a crocodile once in real life. I don't know if I would ever see a piranha in real life though.

Suriname was wild, even urban canals were full of caimans, basically mini crocs. There was one occasion Monkey-B and I were wading in knee-deep water collecting water lilies for lunch, and out of the corner of my eye a caiman launched into the water right next to us. We scared him just as much as he scared us.

That must be a really scary experience. I might have a trouble sleeping for days if I am to experience that. Good thing it did not attack any of you.

That river bathing looks fun, but possibly very cold. I think I might shrivel up! Oy.

Hopefully the change of routine next month will turn out positive for you. You're pretty adept at finding productive ways to spend your time!

Well, we're north of the equator here, so the cold time of the year is the same as you. The weather is pretty chilly here, especially at night, but it's also the dry season, so the river is clean and clear and shallow, but boy oh boy is it cold. I like and also don't like it, it definitely wakes you up, but you can't really casually swim in it for an hour because you'd definitely end up hypothermic. I'd like to relocate my work desk to the cabin and enjoy the river view, perhaps that's a good project.

That would definitely be really awesome! I want to relocate my office back upstairs to enjoy a window, but that room is still occupied by a child.

Haha, sounds we like both have limited space in some sense of the word. I guess I have plenty of space, but not much rain-free space.

That was a great experience bathing at the river. I still remember the old days. When I was living with my aunt, we used to laundry our clothes, bedsheets and all at the river. After the laundry, we will take a bath at the river and eat the foods we bring while we are having fun at the river. πŸ˜€

We've done laundry in the river a few times here, but because it's nearly a cliff, it's not super convenient. River picnics are a little easier though, we've had our share of those, the food always tastes better outdoors πŸ˜‰.

Family safety first is the priority. πŸ˜€
Yeah that's true. Foods becomes more delicious when shared outside especially when having a picnic. πŸ˜€

I hope today to prepare a surprise picnic for Monkey-B, it's her 9th birthday, so I am attempting to prepare a special lunch for her. Also, it's my first day of not taking the kids to school anymore, losing a lot of money to pay our neighbor to do it in his truck, but I need the sleep to be a healthy dad.

Oh wow! It's a bit late of saying happy birthday to Monkey-B. For sure it was a blast and you all had a great day during the celebration. πŸ˜€
You have to take good care of your self and health as well. Just don't worry of the big lose of money coz it will come back more as you were able to help a neighbor as well for an extra income. πŸ€—

I am already enjoying the extra time and using it to make special lunches for the kids to take to school. I would still love some extra time, so I'll keep brainstorming for ways to have more of this precious resource.
