👋 Goodbye Joe 🛺 Our Visitor Heads To The Islands 🏝️
The time has come for our visitor to head to Koh Rong, so we said goodbye to Joe in Kampot before heading back home to Steung Kach.

nbsp;We spent a few days in Kampot visiting old friends, but I sensed Joe didn't come to Cambodia to sit around and make conversation like us foreign residents that have lived here for many years. Joe is a man on a vacation, and wants to see many sights and do many things that I don't have the time or money for, so I found him a new hipster backpacker hostel with a social scene. He stayed there for one night before catching a bus headed towards Sihanoukville/Koh Rong the following morning.
Monkey-B and I went to the hostel in the morning to see Joe off and make sure his transport to the bus was sorted and everything was okay. He had already made some friends, and in addition to that, a few other travelers from the hostel were headed to the same island with Joe. After Joe left Kampot, Monkey-B and I decided to stay one more day and gather several friends for a dinner together at Monkey Republic, a guesthouse/restaurant owned by another friend/former student of mine.
Last Night In Town 🎉
Monkey-B served as photographer for some of the few shots I have from this journey. I was simply so busy driving, socializing, and trying to keep ASEAN Hive going, that I found little to time to blog or take photos. I have actually been home for several days, and most of the events in this post took place 5 days ago, but that's no reason not to share them. Monkey-B and I spent two days driving back home in the tuk-tuk, a total distance of nearly 600km, and I am so glad to be back home on the mountain.
Kampot is where we had a restaurant before we went abroad 4 years ago to get married and later stranded for 3 years during the COVID debacle. It was bitter sweet seeing this town after 4 long years, but I have no regrets not resettling here, I only miss the people. The town has lost its charm and is full of girly bars and cut-throat competitive capitalism that doesn't suit my lifestyle.

The girly bars might be fun, at least for a while 😁 but yeah, the rest can stay in Kampot! So glad you were able to reconnect with old friends and chillax a bit! 💜
It's always a strange sensation to visit places we once lived or even former homes. There was still a draw here, especially out of town upriver, but there's no doubt the the town lost its charm and turned a little seedy. Of course the conversations and people were the highlight of the trip.

I am/was long overdue for a holiday, and even the break away from Hive blog was nice too despite still keeping ASEAN Hive going during my holiday. I am glad to be back home though 🙏.

Funny I didn't even think of that, but good eye. Strangely enough there is also a Mad Monkey hostel in the same town.
Meet a friend who has been separated for a long time, really excited and join in the fun too.
It was my first time to meet him, he is a friend of my friend. We did have fun though and became friends in the process.

It's a well-deserved mini vacation for you but with all the travel and what not, I would be happy to return to my home life as well.
I agree, I am just not a good tourist anymore. 7 days is enough for me, then I start to feel like I need to work and earn and stop spending. Also, there's nothing quite like sleeping in your own bed even if the hotel mattresses are superior.
I totally feel the same way. I rarely go on any sort of outing for longer than an afternoon these days.
May he travel safe and enjoy the vacation. I guess it was an exhausting drive going home. Glad you guys were safe and sound.
It is much further than I would normally travel in the tuk-tuk, but once a year I guess it's okay to do a major road trip. Also, it was fun doing something special with Monkey-B, just the two of us.
Great to see you having some social time away. Long way to drive in a tuk-tuk tho. Champion effort. Sorry to hear Kampot has lost its charm. Its a town we've always wanted to return to.
It was nice to see how things changed regardless. Kep still has marina with a few sailboats, Knai Bang Chatt is the name of the hotel/marina there, but you can still pretty far up the Kampot River in a sailboat because it's quite deep. The town has lost its charm, but I think you'd have fun if you sailed up river and docked somewhere with some bungalows.

I also say goodbye Joe I hope while he is here he can spend time with you and enjoy the beautiful scenery.maybe the scenery in Asia is not as beautiful as other continents,but thanks to your assistance maybe he can be more entertained...Because in Cambodia there are also very many beautiful parties and amazing views,During the few days he was here, of course you must know a little about the situation in your home country, hopefully Joe can come again on vacation, of course, bringing his family entourage...
I think he had a good time, but I am not sure he will return to Cambodia because the world is an open book for him, and with his savings he could move to just about any country in the world. I think he will eventually choose a more modern country that is also a little more expensive, but he's always a welcome visitor here.
