Cincinnati Chili For The Family 🍝 & A Few Proverbs For This Week's ASEAN Hive Community Challenge 🧠

CHILIJY.png

I made some Cincinnati Chili for the family last night, one of the few American foods that we all enjoy, and I also thought of some proverbs to share for the current ASEAN Hive Community challenge.

Cold Weather, Hot Food ♨️

cooking.png

I won't make this a recipe post because I've already shared this recipe on Hive in the past, even though I make it a little different each time depending on the ingredients available. This time I used black beans instead of red beans, and because crackers aren't available, I used broken poppadums as the crunchy topping.

Cincinnati Chili - Five Way 🌶️ Ital Version - A Household Favorite

herb.png

I always add fresh cilantro or sawtooth herb to my Cincinnati Chili, and at this point I have pretty much Indianized this American dish of Macedonian origins. What I like about this dish is the cocoa powder works well with the other flavors, much like Mexican mole. Also, adding all the fresh toppings like crunchy bits, raw onion, fried tofu, and hot sauce, make it really fun because you can tailor the dish to your tastes.

Mey-Yii Approves ✌️

that.png

At home Mey-Yii is used to eating grilled meat with white rice, these are the easiest low-effort foods her Grandman can prepare quickly. Because of this, Mey-Yii has never eaten anything with strong flavors like Indian food, so it's a bit overwhelming to her, and she still doesn't like most vegetables.

onion.png

Monkeu-B and I like to add way too much raw onion to this dish, as you can see in my photo. Mey-Yii stayed the night again last night because her Grandma is already back on another casino bender. This time she was gone for 3 days and only returned 1 night before disappearing again.

chillin.png

We are not very happy with this woman, and we've already confronted her to let her know we disapprove of the way she is raising her granddaughter. She was't the least bit ashamed I guess, because this talk didn't stop her from heading back to the casino again.

👨‍💻 ASEAN Hive Community Challenge #24 - 👵 Local Proverbs/Folk Sayings 👴 With Ecency Prizes

Proverbs

There is a challenge in ASEAN Hive this week concerning local proverbs, so I thought I would share some with you all from my homeland, the USA, hoping perhaps my Southeast Asian readers haven't heard all of them before.

"Don't let your alligator mouth overload your peacock a✳✳!"

Meaning: This could be used as a warning to someone that is verbally intimidating you, a way of letting them know you're not afraid to fight them and that it's about to happen soon if they don't shut up. Also it could be used as warning for someone to not make promises they can't keep.

"If you snooze, you lose."

Meaning: This one is extra special because it also rhymes, and basically warns of the consequences of not reacting quickly enough.

"You can't have your cake and eat it too."

Meaning: A warning that you shouldn't have two incompatible things, or perhaps even too much of anything in life.

Bad news travels fast.

Meaning: Gossip and negative rumors spread faster than positive talk or good news.

There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Meaning: There are always hidden costs behind every transaction, even if the transaction is free.

Yes, from the name of the food, we already know that it is food that comes from the US, Cincinnati, Chile. As far as I know Cincinnati is the name of a city or state in the US, is it justin?

I feel sorry for Mey-Yii, always left by her grandmother. I'm worried that he might be psychologically disturbed, because a child like him will record everything that happens to him in his brain memory, and that he will remember when he grows up. May Mey-Yii always be healthy and safe in the protection of your family my brother 🙏

Thank you for sharing with us the proverbs from your home country, of the 5 proverbs, I am very familiar with the last one. "There is no such thing as a free lunch". In our country, this proverb is very popularly used by politicians, especially when the election time is near 😄

Have a nice day my brother 👍

Cincinnati is the capital of the state of Ohio, but it's not a famous state for tourism or anything. The only thing I can think of is that Ohio is the home of the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" museum, and there is not much else to see there. It is the neighbor of my state, Indiana, so I grew up eating this dish a lot. There are regional differences, and Texas chili has more Mexican influence and tastes.

I too worry about Mey-Yii's psychological health, she has seen a lot of bad behavior during her life, and almost no positive rolemodels. I hope some of the trauma can be undone, but she is already old enough to never forget some of things she's lived through.

The last proverb, haha, yes, I have heard different versions of it all around the world, but the message is always a similar one. Politicians occasionally use some form of this proverb in the USA too 🤦‍♂️.

hello mr @justinparke hope you are in a happy state today, I think we all have different tastes especially in terms of culture and culture are also different, this is a pretty beautiful diversity in my opinion, even though we are different but we are still the same, at least we are the same -together shelter in this community that we love,

regarding taste when the weather is cold like this, I really like the fried banana tofu, the fried tofu, which is served hot, must really attract my attention,

You are the ideal man in my opinion, you must do housework very often to help your wife, and you are very good at cooking, @srey-yuu must be very proud to have a perfect and happy family,

oya do you not have a son

I always remind my wife how lucky she is to have a husband that not only works more than full-time, but also does half of the cooking and household chores, but she usually rolls her eyes when I do this 🙄. Your right though, we have only daughters , no sons.

ASEAN Hive is like shelter from the storm that is often Hive politics, I like your analogy. I've done my best to keep our community out of Hive drama and politics, and I hope this will serve us well in the future.

Your chili must be good if you got a smile from Srey-Yuu! 😊 And I would be right there with you & MonkeyB with the extra onion on top! Yum! 😁 The question is: how many "alarms" do you put in your chili...? 😬

Funny, Monkey-B will hardly eat onions in any form except for massive amounts on top of her chili. She's got good chili tastes, and now even prefers some dashes of Tabasco on her 'Merican food. We rarely eat American things, mostly because I don't know many of my people's dishes, and my parents weren't good cooks, so I started at 16 years old with a Thai cookbook, never made even one casserole in my life 😁.

Chili is always the dish I make when for friends that say all American food is bland. I was raised on Indiana spaghetti while secretly being loyal to Cincinnati Chili, and later a stepmom from Texas would introduce me to Texas chili. I keep things pretty tame when I cook, at least for our family. I always think it's tame until a visitor eats with us and is overwhelmed by flavors and spice. Poor little Mey-Yii lives on white rice and stir-fried pork with no seasonings, so she often doesn't know what to do with our food.

Extra raw onions on top is the only way to go, but just as crucial are the crackers and hot sauce. I won't even make chili if I don't have all the accessories.

Gosh, it sounds like you're raising 3 daughters now. That poor little girl is lucky to have you guys as neighbours. Loving the proverbs. Might have to share some Aussie ones.

We didn't plan on it, but when I reflect back on each week, I usually realize that Mey-Yii has slept at our house more often than not. I would love to hear some Aussie proverbs, not sure if I already know any or not, but let me try to make one up now.......

A kangaroo with an esky in the avo is not stopped by a rabbit proof fence.

Does it work? I maxed out my OZ vocab in that one 🤣

You guys are "true blue" looking after that little girl.
"Fair crack of the whip" which is also "give a bloke a break mate" or "Fair shake of the sauce bottle" all meaning give someone a chance. "A squeaky wheel gets the oil" meaning he who complains the loudest gets the attention. Hope that broadens your Aussie vocabulary 😉

Definitely no 'Merican proverbs with the word "bloke" in them 😉. Surely there is a Aussie proverb involving kangaroos 🤔

Mey-Yii is a troubled girl, and even my wife has kind of lost her patience. I think she expected a bit of quick loyalty and respect from Mey-Yii, but as a step-parent, I know this does not come easily or quickly. In some abstract sense, I think Mey-Yii is making my wife live through many of the struggles I've face as a stepdad.

It felt like I learned about a new dish, rain outside and delicious food inside, what a great moment.

Yes, but I have slowly morphed this dish back into it's South Asian roots. It's originally from Macedonia/Albania, and likely from the Roma people (who are of South Asian origins). The Macedonians took it to New York where it became a hot dog sauce, and then later the chili dish.

Now I am slowly turning it back into a South Asian dish, very much like Rajma Chawal, but with cocoa powder, raw onions, and served on pasta. I don't know why but it works, and the flavors all combine very well.

I can say that you, monkey-b, and me have similarities. I also love putting extra raw onions on dishes where it is part of the ingredients. Anyway, it looks like they enjoyed the American food you prepared for them.

I love raw onions on certain dishes, especially most Indian foods. American food is usually so bland, but chili is a dish I am proud of because it's pretty complex for an American recipe. Growing up my parents only cooked with onions, garlic, salt, and pepper, so you can imagine what happened to my taste buds the first time I had Mexican, Chinese, and Thai food 🤯.

Still speechless about Mey-Yii's situation. I'm also thinking the grandma actually doesn't want to live any longer any way. With the amount of time she spent at the casino, I don't doubt she can't feed Mey-Yii, she probably can't feed herself any longer.

Those are some very comprehensive explanation of the proverbs. Lemme think of one and make the next post.

You aren't wrong about that, I sense that woman doesn't enjoy the gift of life. Even with hardships and struggles, I still give thanks for the chance to live and feel, but safe to say she only gives thanks when she wins a hand of cards or a slot pull at the casino.

Funny you mention food, the Grandma has returned for an evening, and Mey-Yii is spending tonight with her. Apparently the woman bought some pork in the town, asked the seller to cook it for her, the seller refused. She arrived back in the village and asked a neighbor to cook it for her because she is afraid of getting burned. The neighbor refused, and then she made Mey-Yii stir-fry up some unflavored pork to eat with white rice, what a sad meal.

However though, Mey-Yii always choose this over our spicy veg food because it's what she's used too. How cruel to be gone so long, then come home and make your granddaughter cook for you. My family said they overheard Mey-Yii mumbling to herself, saying something like "wonder where she'll go next.....," I assume referring to her Grandma.

Truly tragic, makes me want to find the perfect proverb for this cruel woman. I told Mey-Yii to tell her Grandma to just flush money down the toilet at home, and perhaps every now and then the toilet will clog and overflow, making her feel like a winner 🤔.
