My Health Journey Continues...

avatar

Something a little different tonight...

I'm a 40 something year old male. And up until the past few years, I had been relatively healthy. At least I thought so, as earlier this year I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes!

I saw this as a huge wake up call and went onto reinvent myself. When I got the diagnosis, I immediately did a 180 and started taking my health serious.

I read books about the disease, I worked with my doctor and after a few months I had lost about 30 lbs, had my blood sugar under control, was going for hikes and walks daily and felt the best I had in my entire adult life...

That seems like a lifetime ago, because tonight I'm sitting in bed as my left foot feels like it's being stabbed every second with a gout flare up. Obviously, the healthy living has taken a back seat...

I haven't been going for walks or hikes at all, and while I don't want to make excuses...I'm now living in a major city and no longer in the country where at had nature at my back door.

My diet isn't bad per se as I really watch my carbs and always have plenty of salads and veggies. Plus my blood sugar is still under control but wow...I feel like garbage!

It's funny...I tell people here on the blockchain to keep showing up, be stubborn, don't give up...But here I am, after all the progress I made this year...Basically back to where I was.

While I'm not the hefty 310 lbs I was back in April, I'm feeling like doo doo. And I think it all comes directly from my lack of exercising and hiking.

Cry me a river right?

I know the answer...It's right in front of me. And that feeling I felt in the summer of being in the best shape of my adult life...Seems like a distant memory.

So this is my 'putting it out there' again on the blockchain...

I did the same thing when I made the commitment to lose the weight and get my blood sugar in check, but now I need to keep my health a priority.

It'll start with a physical this week from my doctor because something doesn't feel right. Next I will be re-evaluating my diet and exercise regime. No excuse...I don't have the wilderness in my back yard but there are plenty of ways to stay active in a major city!

I know the answer...I know the solution...

It's just time for me to put up, or shut up.

And forgive me, I know this is not the kind of content you are used to seeing from yours truly. But this is my way of kicking myself in the butt. I feel that when I 'put things out there' on paper or in this case...On chain...I stick to it!

No excuses, I know I can accomplish my health goals because I saw what happened earlier this year. And yeah, diabetes kind of puts a little curveball to your plans, but I'm not feeling sorry for myself.

Current weight: 280 lbs

Target for April 2022: 250 lbs

Blood sugar: 5.8 mmol/L

Target for April 2022: Same

Let's see where we are at in April, as it'll be my one year 'anniversary' of officially being diabetic.

Good luck brother. I’m starting again as well. We will have to keep each other in check. I’m starting to read eat smarter. Seems like a cool book.

Don't plan for the easy target. You can definitely make it to 220 lbs with little effort. Be active, alternate food. Keep an eye on what helps and what does not hep. Wish you all the best!

I just know how defeated I would be if I tried for 220 in 4 months and didn't get close lol

Man you should not beat yourself up because of a temporary setback. I know you gonna bounce back and find a new way of balancing your health and life puzzle 💪

The hardest part is always to get started and find a way to make it consistent.

Yeah I'm not feeling down or anything about it, almost disappointed at myself for not keeping it a priority.

I always thought that blood sugar below 6 was considered good. All the best with the April weight targets!

You got this Jon. I start my walking regime again Monday. Getting outdoors and experiencing nature does make a big difference not only to physical health but mental health as well. I bet once you get back at it you will see a big difference quickly in how you feel and so will I.

Best!

Must be nice to have access to regular health care up there in Canada 😝. I'm stuck down here in the US still unable to afford "health insurance" while I have type 1 diabetes and haven't been to a regular doctors visit since ~2014 #thestruggleisveryreal

Good luck on your goals though! I'm sure you will be able to hit them, you seem to be very sensible and motivated.

You know, it's not perfect up here...But I'm grateful for the Canadian health care system. That being said, because I work for myself, I have to pay everything out of pocket for drugs and test strips lol

Ha! I bet everything is a reasonable cost though, the last time I paid for insulin it was ~$250...

Yep! Here's an example of the nonsense available to me, this is my cheapest option.

"First 3 visits at $65 Copay before deductible" is another fun tidbit further down in the terms of the "coverage". "Total Expense Estimate $2217.36" is a joke too 😂

It's great that you made it a public goal. I'm sure you wanted to have no excuse for not exercising and eating carefully. Diabetes is not a joke if you are not determined to keep it under control. Both my parents have it, so I know.

Yeah my mom has it too, it's a nasty little bugger but you can control it. I do have it under control so far, but I still need to keep fighting.
