The tight 4

We were a group of friends, two boys and two girls. Nancy was a sweet girl and fun to stay with, we were in the same department and in the same level. We did things together. Victor was my best friend among the tight 4 and we had each other's back as I had thought. Anthony was a sweet soul too. We all were in the same department. We had each other's back and tried to sort for each other, though that was what I thought.

During my university days, we tried to help one another and have fun together until my 300 level. I have an option to come out for a post in my department which is the post of the vice president. During the first semester, I started my campaign earlier telling people my agenda and informing them of the position I assumed to enter. My campaign was successfully going on well as my close friends weren't left out in giving me the necessary advice and support and joining in my campaign. I was running unopposed as of that first semester.

Second semester, which was the time for the election, as the day draws closer, like a pregnant woman who doesn't know what her baby will look like until she puts to bed. My friends were now coming out for the same position I was running for. I didn't just have one opponent but two. Ijeoma and Alice. The competition was high, I was ready to play the game tougher, It was really hard to choose between I and Ijeoma who is a close friend and my reading partner. She was my opponent. I got to play my cards well.

As each day passes by and the day of the election draws near. I was uncertain what the future held but I was held with doubt.

During my campaign to the lower levels, one of my close friends Nancy who was always with me drew my attention.

"Do you know that Victor is against you? I chuckled and gave an amused face like she was telling a story.

"I'm serious…..yo.." she tried explaining further but I shook my head in disbelief and laughed hilariously.

"Fine, come and see this" She was agitated by my laughter. She brought out her phone to show me evidence.

I read through every word and stood in shock, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I staggered behind and looked at her in disbelief, my mouth slightly open. Victor was the closest to me among the tight 4. He gave me advice on how to go about my campaign. Little did I know that he was stabbing me in the back but acted unlike it.

I was shocked, I felt betrayed and it hurt most when it's coming from someone close. He didn't have any idea I knew about it till the day I approached him.

I looked closely at him before speaking my mind.

"If you're giving a knife to stab me, will you do that?"

He looked at me like, "what are you driving at? Why will I stab you?"

"Can you answer the damn question" I was becoming impatient, he looked so innocent like he didn't have any clue of what I was saying.

"No I won't do that" I looked down, I couldn't hold it anymore as hot tears dripped down from my cheek.

"Lier" I snapped in-between sob

He looked at me in disbelief, I brought out my phone and showed him.

"I thought you were my friend,I never knew you were a snake in a green grass"

He looked at me in awe, "probably wondering how I knew, there is nothing hidden under the sun" I stormed out, I didn't want to hear his apologies not now and not any time soon. I felt so betrayed by someone I called my best friend. I option out.

After the election, it was Alice who won the position of a vice president while Ijeoma was compensated with the position of a treasurer since there was no candidate for it.

My other friends tried their best to reconcile us together. I didn't even want to see his face but it was inevitable as we usually have our lectures together. I wasn't going to get mad at him forever.

Nancy and Anthony planned it all for us to make up again, I forgave him but the trust and friendship was already shattered. I couldn't trust him again but we are still friends till now but no more best of friends.
Thank you for reading!

I am so sorry that happened to you. It must have been very painful.

Just try to let go of the anger and move on.

When trust is betrayed between close friends, it is almost impossible to repair. Something precious is lost. I am sorry that this happened to you. You make the reader wonder what it is that Victor did to you, and what he had to gain from being deceptive. I don't think this is ever properly revealed, which leaves the reader less empathetic as there is a lack of identification with what has happened. You can get the reader invested if you can get them to relate to your feelings of hurt, betrayal, and disappointment.

Your piece has structure and balance but needs more show than tell, more character development and editing, for spelling and grammar. If you use Google docs to create your drafts or Grammarly to check your drafts, and make corrections before publishing, your stories will flow better and get a little uptick immediately. If you proofread your stories with an analytical eye before publishing, you will pick out things like repetitive phrasing, especially close together eg: there are a few instances just in your opening paragraph. When you find things like this, rephrase the repetitive elements. You will notice how the flow improves.

Thank you for sharing a story from your life with The Ink Well.

The supporting characters like Nancy, Anthony and Ijeoma are a bit underdeveloped but help move the plot along by revealing Victor's betrayal, trying to reconcile the friends, and competing in the election.

It's not easy to trust someone who once betrayed you. I don't get surprised when people stab me anymore, I expect anything from anybody. This has been helping me for long. If you like betray me, I will still appreciate you the way you are, I already have space to accomodate that . Sorry about that experience
