Naturally Toned Walking Liberty in the Sunshine

avatar

It's a sunny day outside and this toned walking eagle was just asking to be photographed in the sunshine.

It's a 2005 "Silver Eagle" silver round, one troy oz of 0.999 pure AG. The obverse has tones of yellow and orange with a slight patina and silvery high reliefs.

The reverse has a very good tone, including colors of purple, yellow, orange and green. Also with a nice patina, clearly showing the detail in the eagle's wings. High relief shows a bright silver.

In my hand the obverse takes on a slightly uglier look, but the patina shows well and the yellows, although they look "muddy".

The reverse still shows the patina and the yellows and purples, but again outside of the sunshine it takes on a "muddy" look.

The look of the coin in person is somewhere in-between, rainbow iridescent when the light hits it right, dirty and muddy at first glance.

Well toned coins are among my favorites, the difference between a natural tone and an artificial tone is very noticiable.

The Difference Between Artificial Tone and Natural Tone

An artificially toned coin takes on rainbow colors and have no patina. They look pretty, but something is sort of off about them. They will have vibrant colors, usually in a bullseye pattern.

They can be stunningly beautiful, if done well. Some may prefer this manufactured style of toned coins, but I'll take the natural "muddy" effect over artificial toning any day.

Which do you prefer? Natural toning or artificial toning?

Teach Your Children Liberty from Sin

We encourage parents to teach their children principles of Godliness, beginning with the Word and an understanding who God is and what His Son has done to form a relationship with us.

No one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, his workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will prove the quality of each man’s work. 1 Corinthians 3:11-13

Teach Your children Liberty from Tyranny

Second to this is the principle of self-determination and freedom, lest we loose the ability to teach our children the first principle in future generations. Our children read the Tuttle Twin books, specifically to learn libertarian principles, which most people learn later in life. These books are useful for our family, and yours, to teach children concepts that seem complicated, but are made simple in these books. I am an affiliate for Libertas Publishing, your purchase will help our family grow financially.

Nice coin! How did it end up so toned? Pretty cool!

How exactly this coin became toned like this is a mystery, but toning generally happens from some sort of oxidizer in the environment, or heat also causes that rainbow effect. I bought it this way, because I appreciated the colors.

Pretty cool. I have several Morgan's toned with nice rainbows from years of heat and humidity. I hate the artificial toning, it's gotta be real!

I think I prefer the natural over artificial, however, the artificial ones do look kind of cool.

I agree, natural is much better. Artificial is more like electric shock colors!

I bought it toned like this, it is what attracted me to it. Sort of dirty and old looking, but also interesting colors that shine in the sun.
