Weekend Whirls | In The End It Was Worth The Effort

Stupid or not?

Today I came up with something that afterward I say, "Why?". The idea to bake your own sandwiches is of course a great idea in itself. At least, I usually like it and also enjoy doing it. But why the hell did I think of it today… when it was 35 degrees outside in the backyard and the kitchen had turned into a giant oven? That is actually a bit of a mystery to me.

Blame the avocado!

But let me start by blaming the avocados. I hardly ever buy them, but yesterday they were up for grabs in the supermarket, with a box of cherry tomatoes next to them. Together for a fixed price of 4 euros. Now you should know that everything here is now so extremely expensive, that this was indeed not even that expensive for today's price. My inspiration was not at a very high level, but when I saw those avocados I suddenly thought that I could buy some vegetarian tuna with them, bake my own sandwiches ... et voila. Then I had a light dinner again, and that's exactly what I'm looking for with the summer heat that has descended in the Netherlands.

Shoes melting on the asphalt

So this morning it was time, I had to make my bread. And now let's rewind for a moment to the weather report. We're in the middle of tropical temperatures, you know, temperatures of the kind that make your shoes seem to melt on the asphalt. Now I ask you, is it then wise to start kneading a dough in the kitchen, and then use a hot oven after all that hard work? Probably not, but hey, you have to eat anyway, and this was my plan for today!

My personal sauna

So, there I was, like a true chef in my own personal sauna, in a kitchen that was damned hot to even stay for 10 minutes, let alone do some hard work in there. Normally I'm used to dogs walking in front of my feet, but even they now decided that they preferred to lie outside in the cooling shade and dip their paws and muzzles in a water bath from time to time. And believe me, after working hard to knead my dough to perfection I felt the same desire.

Cooling down when the dough is rising

Fortunately, you can walk away for a while during these kinds of chores, your dough still has to rise and while your dough is rising at the tropical temperatures in the kitchen, you can take a cooling shower yourself, and then keep your partner and the dogs company in the backyard.

I probably lost my mind

When my preparations were done and the bread could be put in the oven, I asked myself: "Why? Why on earth did I come up with this for today?" But my mind is probably lost for a while, lost in the sweltering heat of my own cooking.

I don´t feel the need to repeat it

Finally, my bread came out of the oven! Beautiful as I wanted it to be, and I really felt like I had created a culinary masterpiece. But even though the result has been worth it in the end, I must confess that I never want to try to become a baker in the heat of summer again. Unless the situation here changes so much and of course, I have a huge fan and a personal air conditioner at hand. Unfortunately, that will certainly not be possible for the time being, so I will just have to take the circumstances into account a bit more.

Anyway ... the light dinner I had in mind finally succeeded, and in the end,

It was worth all the effort.

I guess we can say it wasn't stupid after all! delicious treats all around! although, I don't envy you baking in this heat! The further I'm willing to go currently is throwing some bread/sandwiches in the air fryer and toasting them!
