Friends, Fun & Beyond.

It's funny how we promise ourselves not to do things anymore and still end up doing the same thing despite knowing the consequences. I am someone who loves to stay indoor and everyone around me knows this very well. I barely step out of my house when I don't have anything to do outside so whenever a few of my friends have an outing, they always insist that I go with them because they think I am depressed.

Steve messaged me on Friday morning while I was at work and even before I clicked to read the message, I was 90% sure that he wanted to invite me to a party.
We were friends from our school days and professional party crashers because it was our only way of surviving at a time in school but we stopped after we graduated.

"Bro, I need rest. The week was a very stressful one for me," I replied after reading his message.

"That was what you said the other time, always complaining about work. Just say it if you don't want to be going out with me anymore and I won't bother inviting you again," Steve replied.

I tried recalling the last time we went out together and truly it's been a while but you can't blame me because my work was too demanding at that time. Although those parties weren't a big deal but the one he invited me to happened to be his favorite uncle's 60th birthday.

"Steve, it's not what you think. Let's talk later," I replied and thought that would be all about the event but upon arriving home, Steve had dropped an IV and the party cap which he had sown for me.

"I got your message but I told you..." I tried pouring out my mind but Steve just wouldn't let me talk.

"Mr man, I have gone to my uncle's place to help with the preparation. Please don't miss the party tomorrow," He cuts in and ended the call immediately.

I didn't let Steve's words bother me and just prepared myself for the weekend. I was busy cooking when I got a credit alert with the remark, "Transport fare"

I burst into laughter and went to check if he had dropped a message for me and all I saw was a laughter emoji.

"I will just use your money to cook chicken tomorrow," I replied and he replied with an emoji again.

As I lay on my bed that night, the event crossed my mind again and I just smiled. It reminded me of how I, Steve and some other friends always vote for which party to crash after collecting posters during the week.

I needed the rest and was also having a change of heart about the event but I couldn't decide that night.

I was busy cleaning my room around 10 am when I got a call from another friend's message asking if I would be at Steven's uncle's birthday.

"No, I am not coming but don't tell Steven. He will be mad at me," I replied and immediately, I heard voices laughing.

"Steven can hear you because the phone is on speaker, please show up because Segun and Sunday are also here. Let's just use this opportunity to hang out," Tunde replied.

"Wow, so you guys were coming and didn't tell me. That's terrible," I asked.

***"It was meant to be a surprise but when Steve said you might not show up, we decided to forfeit the surprise," Tunde replied.

I finished cleaning and just went straight to shower. I had my party dresses intact since I don't wear them often and immediately I was done dressing up, I hit the road immediately.

Upon arriving there, I was excited to see my friends. We only communicated on the phone since we left school. Only I and Steve see each other always because we live in the same neighbourhood.

We exchanged pleasantries, laughed about many things and I was glad I didn't miss the event. While the party was on, we were served refreshments and Steve kept bombarding our table with drinks. Two among us were heavy drinkers while I was terrible with alcohol because my tolerance is low.

"Won't you drink wine? Stop being this chivita guy," Sunday teased me and I just laughed.

Deep down, I wished I could drink like them but I can't after what happened to me the last time when I overstepped my boundaries with alcohol.

***"Let me just be. We are actually having the same fun in different ways," I replied.

The fun went on and we were served sumptuous meals while the guest artist entertained us with Fuji music.

"Guys, I smuggled this Amarula out. My uncle kept it for his friends but you can enjoy this since there are more there," Steve said after gently placing the wine on our table.

The guys were excited and I just watched them adore the bottle while I paid attention to my phone.

Tunde opened the bottle and filled up their disposable cups. The creamy texture of the wine and aroma swept me off my feet and I didn't know when I stretched my cup just to have a taste of it.

I emptied the first cup and asked for more because it was my first time trying the drink. The bottle eventually finished and Sunday volunteered to buy Best Cream, another wine that can give that creamy taste since we couldn't get another Amarula.

We opened the bottle and emptied it about an hour later. Luckily for us, Steve's uncle gave him another Amarula to share with us and I joined them since the drink wasn't affecting me.

The evening came and it was time for us to leave. I was practically okay while sitting and immediately I stood from the chair, I felt dizzy. I shut my eyes for a few seconds and upon opening them, everywhere was spinning. To avoid embarrassment, I sat back and told Steve how I was feeling.

I didn't get out of my seat till almost everyone had left including my friend who came from a far distance. After the party was completely over, I and Steve got into an Uber.

Unfortunately for me, my street had a very bad road and I had to trek from where the Uber dropped us off. To prevent people from knowing what was happening to me, I insisted that I walked alone without support.

It took me five minutes to cover a ground that didn't take me up to a minute. Everything kept spinning but I managed to get home and promised myself for the time not to drink alcohol again.

Lol, must've been funny trying to force yourself to walk normally.
I don't know what alcohol feels like, but my friends say they get a buzz feeling when they take it cos I'm always wondering why people drink something that is mostly bitter. How does it feel like for you?

Not all alcohol is bitter and in the case of Amarula or Best Cream, it's like drinking melted ice cream and by the time you realise what's going on, it would be late.

I don't take beer though...

I don't take alcohol so my belief was that they were all bitter. My first taste of alcohol was many years ago and I only tasted to know what it tasted like.

it's like drinking melted ice cream and by the time you realise what's going on, it would be late.

Must be scary.

You impart your perspective to us well, @george-dee. We feel your reluctance to socialize, and we feel your fatigue after a long week at work. And yet, Steve is a winning personality. We are rooting for him to prevail and persuade you as we read.

You describe in detail your reluctance to drink and then your relenting. We understand by the end of the story why you didn't want to drink. Alcohol does not sit well with you.

You have a good arc in this story, @george-dee, and while it is not action packed, it is still entertaining and holds the reader's interest.

Thank you for sharing this experience with us.

Your friends meant well but that amarula drink was too enticing. Luckily you arrived home safely.
