Americanah Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
It took me a while to get into this book but I ended up enjoying it. The writing's really good and I felt quite immersed in the lives of the characters and I felt it to be very deeply nuanced. For someone who shares nothing with the characters backgrounds, I found it interesting how relatable some bits still were. I enjoyed Ifemelu's blog posts and really felt like the book opened my eyes to a lot of stuff I haven't really considered before like 'non-American blacks' and just a lot of cultural influences as well on the characters. Ifemelu's chapters were very entertaining to me, and compared to that Obinze's fell a bit flat in my opinion. He felt less of a fleshed out character to me. I am not sure if it was because of the writing style or because I could just connect better to Ifemelu. Both had interestingly told and very different experiences with migration though, which i really liked. It gives you a glimpse into the spectrum of people's stories and experiences with migration, and how vastly different and personal they are, even though to some it may all look the same from afar. The characters will stay with me for a bit, I can already tell, but I probably won't be turning back to this book soon. I might check out other works by Adichie though!
I liked how relationships were all explored, even the seemingly perfect relationship with Blaine, like really, it felt like perhaps her heart was never truly in it anyway. I liked that it ended on a hopeful note with Obinze deciding to follow his heart but I wish his wife gets her happy ending too and their daughter doesn't end up suffering in the process. This was a 3.75 🌟 for me.
