Innovations and associated ethical and safety concerns

It’s pretty clear we’re in the age of AI and machine use. We may not be at the most advanced stage of it, but this id definitely the start of that era.

All industries from education, to research to even medicine utilizes AI and machines now. Considering the delicate nature of fields like medicine and research, it raises the concern of ethics in the use of these Tech advancements.

As evolved as machines can get, they can never match human intelligence because, well… they’re not human. They can have access to wikipedias of information in fractions of seconds, but what they lack in, the empathy, emotional intelligence, and other things are what will always make humans the superior.

The Movie schematic of the age of AI

When I refer to the age of AI in this post, I’m mostly referring to the era where AI and machine use by people is at its peak.

But in the movies, the age of AI is an entirely different thing. Scarier. Think of the zombie apocalypse where the world is dominated and plagued with zombies. That is how the age of AI is shown in the movies.

An era when the AI uprising begins and where AI and machines start to fight back to become autonomous, and to take over the world.

I was rewatching Love, Death + Robots last night and cane across an episode that sort of touched on the extinction of the human race. Our inability to treat our AI, virtual assistants and robots more humanly causes them to turn on us. I found this really interesting because this is already a conspiracy I hear very often on the internet, especially on places like Reddit where all we freaks like to hang out.

But a machine uprising is too crazy, no?

Forget the craze in the argument above, and let’s talk about something more realistic instead.

AI and all the tech advancements run on a backbone of code. And as well know, code is prone to malfunction or develop bugs at some point.

So, say a surgeon robot is in the middle of surgery and experiences a malfunction due to a bug in it’s code. Do we ask politely the patient sliced open on the … to hold on patiently whiles we fix the bug?

I know, I know. “This will be highly unlikely because of course, before they endorse a machine to perform roles line this, measures would’ve been put in place for these sorts of things.”. Let’s not forget though that no matter how bug-resistant their system could be, it’s still a MACHINE.

On the issues of driving cars

Tesla has taken the initiative of paving way for the leap into a future with self-driving cars. To be honest though, self-driving cars are part of of a group of innovations that I consider not so useful. I mean, sure, it could come in handy when you need to take a quick power nap on your to your second job, but the concerns for safety that it poses makes it unreliable (in my humble opinion).

Cyberattacks or hacks on car systems is a very common sight in movies. Hackers can easily (maybe not easily, but they can) override these cars’ codes. In fact, I think that when self-driving cars become a popular thing, car theft and things like kidnappings will hit an all time high.

There’s no doubt that like other tech advancements, innovations like AI have been created to make work and life easier for us. There’s only so much ease we can desire to achieve through innovation until we turn around and become the perpetrators of our downfall.

That is true. This is not always the case though. Sometimes certain innovations accidentally make life a bit....retrogressive (not sure what the word I'm looking for is right now)

they can never match human intelligence

That's until one of these AI companies like OpenAI or DeepMind finally achieve Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) 😅. It's basically an AI with self-awareness and intelligence equal to or higher than that of humans. These AI companies are currently working on it and it's actually the long term goal of all these AI projects being developed everyday. Search for openAI robot on YouTube and you would be amazed by what it can do. A lot of crazy things are low-key going on in the AI world, and it will be fun to see how wild the next 10 years would be (or maybe not)

I hear you, man. The thing is though, no matter how advanced these things get, they really can never match us. I don't want to sound too religious or anything, but fuck man, we were created by God! Lol
