Back to the past, look at the present

I always say that people who met me after I left high school know a completely different person from who the ones that met me before or during high school did.

I’ve been trying to figure out when I started becoming the person I am right now, and it just but me that that happened somewhere in my Uni days. To be honest, the transition started slowly in senior high school.

Before University

Before senior high school (SHS), I was deeply in love with books. The lady bug type of books. This love I believe, is most likely responsible for my ability to read and write now today.

From primary school (somewhere around I think Primary 3) all the way to junior high school, my brother who was the then headmaster of a primary school in my town used to bring me lady bug books everyday from his school’s library. I liked them pictures of the colorful pictures used in the storytelling. The images closely resembled a show I used to love watching on Viasat 1 Tv….

… Tinga Tinga

I think it’s fair to say that when I was around 10 years, this was the best thing on Tv for me! I thought I was the only one in-love with the show until I saw people making memes about it on Twitter after I became an adult

After SHS

I dumped lady bug books for movies. The period I was getting into senior high school was the same time my big sister got into university. She’d just gotten her laptop and loaded it full of movies.

Given my naturally curious nature and love for anything fun, I started watching most of her movies with her, even though I didn’t understand some of the stuff sometimes. This was another huge way I built what is now my current diction, and even started developing a sense of humor.

This was an off and on thing though, cos until we were both on holidays, I didn’t have access to her laptop cos she’d be in school.

By the time I finished SHS, I was a full blown movie addict. I no longer relied on my sister’s laptop anymore because I bought my own phone then. Lol you don’t even want to know how I got the phone.

I started off with movies like the Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Dominion, and the likes. Of course, which movie lover can call themself a movie lover if they haven’t seen Merlin and Legend of the Seeker.

I still find it interesting how much I used to watch movies in high school. What I like though was that I used to study as much as I watched movies. I would study at night prep from around 7:30pm to somewhere around 12am at the least! Then after class, I’d pick my mattress out into our dormitory’s yard, enjoy my movie with a soft drink and biscuits, sometimes Gari when I was very broke. Lol

University

Pre

Because of my unregulated obsession with some of the movies I watched in high school, I basically copied the personality of my favorite characters from my favorite movies. So I basically didn’t have a “personality” at the time. I could be a dragon lord today, a vampire tomorrow, and cartoon character the next. Lol

In

University was when I started finding out about myself. I went through a lot of self discovery and character development in university. I think this was where my sense of humor developed fully. I arrived in Uni a big villager in every way you can think of the word villager. My dressing was wack, my taste in music was wacker, I was broke, and I didn’t have any game!

Fortunately, I’m a fast learner, so I picked up on the trends, dos and don’ts, and blended in quickly. So by the time we started mingling among ourselves on campus, I had a somewhat tolerable and presentable persona.

Still, looking back at what I considered a presentable persona then now, my toes curl in cringe.😂 It’s understandable though, because that persona was it at the time. IT just happened to changed over time, but luckily so did I.

Who you see now

2 years out of University, I have morphed into this person that I see as somewhere towards my best self. I’m sure though that in a few years from now, I’ll redefine what “best self” looks like again. I surprise myself a lot in terms of how much I evolve, and my general life experiences over time. What is important is that I’m still alive and continuously growing and changing, and I’m sure whatever the future holds for me is exciting!

Okay wheeeeww
I can’t believe you used to watch movies with your sister and not understand somethings
I remember how I used to watch movies with my brother and laugh when he laughs so he doesn’t think I don’t know what is going on 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Lol I used to do the fake laughs sometimes too. Most times my sister would be able to tell I was faking the understanding, cos the laugh would be unnecessarily long or weird.😂

Your story is interesting, from a local university fresher to a well grown intellectual man.
One thing I admire so much about your journey is the ability to accept change and evolve speedily. And at the same time avoiding the negativity of university campus that surrounds young men.

I’m sure whatever the future holds for me is exciting!

With your character it'll be more than exciting!

Thanks very much for sharing.

Lol Reddit chose that for me 3 years ago, and I liked it( maybe I am narcissistic:) ), so I stuck with it. Don’t use it anywhere else though. But if I had to choose a new name, I’d probably go with that.

Haha! I see :<)
I guess we're all a bit narcissistic.
I like to make jokes of/to my Ego, these days, and not take it too seriously ;<)

Have a nice day!👋

Glad you are doing well. I can relate. I’ve changed too many times. Certain pieces (the best parts) stay the same but most of me is unrecognizable from 5 or 10 years ago.

I btw checked the Ghana community , it’s hoppin! Damn! I guess all that work paid off.

The interesting thing is that at every point, you think this is the best you, but after every couple of years, you find that that wasn’t even close.

Oh yeah, the community is growing! We have a conference coming up at KNUST (a University in Kumasi) on Saturday. Really looking forward to it.
