This wasn't our agreement

In my high school days, one of our means of getting money to sort out our bills was partaking in menial jobs like bricklaying, clearing farmlands, and others. One day, my friend Solomon got an offer to clear a big space of farmland covered with grass and trees—what we call a "thick forest." He told me about it, and I jumped in instantly, and we scheduled the next day for the work.
The next day, we got our cutlasses, a cutlass sharpener, a keg of water, and we drove out to the farm on our bicycle.

"Solo! This is a thick forest! That price you bargained with the owner is too small for this work," I exclaimed and said to him immediately I got to the landspace, looking shocked at how thick the bush is.

"Oh boy, I tried my best to bargain it, and N15,000 was what we finally agreed on. Beside, this bush is not as thick as you're seeing it, once we put pressure on it today, I'm sure we would finish it the second day," Solomon said with his hands pointing and demonstrating how swift the work would be.

"Hahaha, see the way you're using your hands to clear the bush." I made fun of him because I knew he was the lazy one among us.

We brought out our cutlasses, entered the bush, and cut out a 4-meter-long stick, which we used as measurement in dividing the work into two equal halves.
After that, I gave him the privilege to pick first, and he didn't fail to pick the half that had less bush.

Around 8:00 a.m., we began clearing the bush with full force, sweating and pushing fast in a competitive manner. And in all these, we were entertaining ourselves with the gist, which is always a sure way of not feeling the overstretching of the body.

The weather was reasonable until around 9:30 a.m., when the sun came out like hell. We had to take a break, go for water, and use the opportunity to sharpen our cutlass while Solomon entertained us with Eminem's I'm not afraid on his phone.

After 30 minutes of rest, we went in again with full force, cutting and tearing the forest with no mercy, but the weather was very much at us. We got weakend in not up to an hour of returning to work.

"My brother, it seems you're not feeling this sun." I heard Solomon talk to me from behind as I was busy clearing. He had left his portion for mine.

I stopped, turned back, and said, "Bro, my body is weak already; you're the one I'm trailing, if not I would be resting by now".

"Trailing keh? With this force, you're using to tear down the forest. Can't you see the large space you've cleared?" he said in a mocking tone.

I just sighed, laughed, and said, "Or should we close for today to come back tomorrow?"

"How come you just said what I was about to say?" He concurred with what I suggested, and I picked up my cutlass, and we walked out of the bush.

"Did I say tomorrow? Oh! Tomorrow is market day, and it's a tradition of our community not to do clearing on market days in this part of the land," I said immediately I remembered that the next day is a market day.

"Okay then, let it be next tomorrow, and it should be in the evening because I'd be going somewhere in the morning," he suggested, and I agreed.

We left the scene that day; we didn't go the next day, which was the market day.

When the fixed date reached in the evening, we gathered our tools and rode off on our bicycles to the farm land, and on reaching there, I was surprised at what I saw.

"Solo, what is this? Didn't we agree to come in the evening?" I said, standing in Solomon's front, waiting for an explanation.

"Hehehehehe," he mockingly laughed at me.

"You're not saying anything?," I said to him in a more serious tone.

"Sorry I didn't inform you...
what I was scheduled to do in the morning was cancelled, so I took the opportunity to come over and clear my portion. Sorry, sorry about that"

"Mtchewwww!" I hissed, went for my cutlass, and left him at that spot.

He knew he had fucked up because that kind of work flows better in a competitive mood, not just with one person working and striking the thick bush in a lonely vibe.

As I was clearing with all seriousness, I saw him joining me to clear my portion, and I was glad he decided to use that to appease me because I was angry at him.

With his help, we cleared the land in less than two hours.

Thanks for reading.

I would have been really angry with him too😂😂😂... Should I come and help you beat Solo?
If you still want to beat him.

At least the bush was cleared and you got paid.
I loved the Eminem reference and I smiled real big reading this 😁😁

Your story was original, creative, and comical. The honest and open communication between you and your friend was heartwarming. It was refreshing to see how well you complimented each other in your work as a team, despite having different work ethics.
Thanks for sharing this lovely story with the prompt. Do remember to engage with other members of the community:)

Seems like it worked out even better for you, since you spent fewer hours out there than he did :) ...

Are you familiar with Dreemport, by the way?

Oh how amazing 😅 good thing he thought to appease you because why not😅. All these friends that always want to be ten steps ahead after an agreement has been made.

In the end, you cleared a smaller portion and still got paid. A win-win.
