Meetings. There isn't an adult who doesn't reject meetings.

Today was one of those days when I had to attend a team meeting.
Luckily these events with the "big team", so to speak, are few.
That's because leading a team with a hundred people where there are moments of speech and argument, can be a challenge even for the best executives.

There is no course that prepares you for all the unusual situations that can emerge from these moments. It takes a lot of oratory skills to be able to lead discussions to constructive actions.

But the point here is different. Here we want to look at who sits on the other side of the table.


It's surreal how attached people are to routine!
(routine = conformism, conservatism, same thing over and over)

That is: the difficulty of accepting any change that affects your comfort area.

The negative response to any change in working conditions seems to be instinctive. "Reject" is what the mind seems to say.

Individual attachments add up when the collective comes together. People gather around the most comfortable idea, and start to support the maintenance of processes. This trend is a real idea killer. Innovation Serial Killer.

How many new paths do we fail to consider when faced with situations of rupture because we immediately deny any possibility of change?

This extrapolates purely operational aspects. Think with me about long-term results, about indirect gains. All sacrificed in favor of doing what is easy: repeating and repeating old practices.

We need to fight against our instinct and overcome the fear of the new.

Or we will be condemned to be and be what we are, unchanging in the track of time towards the last station.


Reuniões. Não existe um adulto que não tenha rejeição à reuniões.

Hoje foi um destes dias que foi preciso comparecer a uma reunião da equipe.
Por sorte estes eventos com a "grande equipe", assim digamos, são poucos.
Isso porque liderar uma equipe com uma centena de pessoas onde existe momentos de fala e argumentação, pode ser um desafio mesmo para os melhores executivos.

Não existe curso que te prepare para todas as inusitadas situações que podem emergir destes momentos. É necessário muita capacidade de oratória para conseguir conduzir as discussões para ações construtivas.

Mas o ponto aqui é outro. Aqui queremos olhar para quem senta do outro lado da mesa.

Isto é: a dificuldade de aceitar qualquer mudança que afete sua área de conforto.

A reposta negativa para qualquer modificação nas condições de trabalho parece ser instintiva. "Rejeite" é o que a mente parece dizer.

Os apegos individuais se somam quando o coletivo se reúne. As pessoas aglutinam no entorno da ideia mais cômoda, e passam a apoiar a manutenção dos processos. Essa tendência é uma verdadeira assassina de ideias. Serial Killer da inovação.

Quantos caminhos novos deixamos de considerar ao nos depararmos com situações de ruptura por negarmos de imediato qualquer possibilidade de mudança?

Isso extrapola aspectos puramente operacionais. Pense comigo em resultados de longo prazo, em ganhos indiretos. Tudo sacrificado em prol de fazer o que é fácil: repetir e repetir velhas práticas.

Precisamos lutar contra o nosso instinto e vencer o medo do novo.

Ou estaremos condenados a estar e ser o que somos, imutáveis no trilho do tempo em direção à última estação.

This is a genuinely excellent analysis of why people might be resistant to change. It's always easier to remain in the comfort zone and not risk the unknown.

I will tell you this: risk-benefit analysis is absolutely integral to any decision. Innovations, by definition, always involve a degree of risk, and unless appropriately presented, may not indicate any clear benefit. Hence, there's always resistance to new ideas, as upon initial presentation the risks always pops out first.

That said, we cannot move forward without innovations. To at least some degree, there must always be allowance for some degree of risk - the amount, of course, is difficult to quantify and will usually be subjective. Scrutiny should be encouraged, as it helps us improve, but closure to new ideas should not be the norm. We must continue progressing!

It is a very common attitude of humans, who resist change. It is something very difficult to understand, but security and comfort is a fearsome bear that can impede the development and growth of progress.
The new ideas can fail or succeed, but at least it is a step that is taken to improve.
