The end of an era(s)

It's interesting how posts can just fall into your lap sometimes. With football season winding down and there being only so much basketball content in one week, I wasn't sure what to post about today. Then this little gold nugget of Earth shattering news falls into place and the rest as they say is history.

The news actually dropped last night, but Nick Saban, more often referred to as Nick Satan is stepping down from Alabama as the head coach. Not only is he the winningest head coach in Alabama history, he is also the most winningest coach in the whole NCAA. To say he is the GOAT is nothing short of an understatement.

@enforcer48 will be the first to tell you I have had my fair share of harsh words about Nick Saban and Alabama. As a Michigan State fan, the company line is that Nick Saban left Michigan State after being the head coach from 1995 to 1999 and there is always this question about "what might have been".

My disdain runs a little deeper than that.

It's honestly not abject hatred, but more of a uniform saltiness that gets me riled up about Alabama. The fact is, we are seeing and will see what I would call "the Alabama effect" happening in the Big 10 right now. Given the success of Alabama, big time players want to commit to big time teams. This gives teams like Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, and now U of M the pick of the litter.

These teams will continue to get the best recruits and dominate the landscape until something shifts. Leaving other teams to pick up what scraps they can or maybe now hope for a miracle via the transfer portal.

That's my problem with Alabama. Leave a little for the rest of us would ya?

Over the years, Saban dipped his toes in the NFL a couple of times. In fact, right before he went to Alabama he was coaching the Dolphins.

During one of his earlier NFL runs, he was on the coaching staff under Bill Belichick who I think we all know from Patriots fame. Oddly enough, the Patriots just announced that they are finally parting ways with Bill.

That's pretty crazy to think about given the success the Patriots had for a while there. Maybe it was just Brady that kept them going, but I think Bill has to get a little bit of the credit as well. Maybe Harbaugh will follow in Brady's footsteps and go from U of M to the Patriots...

I honestly don't care about that. It will be interesting to see who takes over things at Alabama.

Despite my misgivings, Saban was a pretty amazing coach. At Alabama his win percentage was 88%. In his entire 28 years of college coaching his win percentage is just over 80%. Tack on seven national titles to those stats and you definitely have a career to be remembered and proud of.

We shall see if Alabama will be as “winning” from this point on.

For sure! They've honestly fallen off a bit in the past couple of years already. I kind of wish they hadn't beaten Georgia in the SEC Championship. I think Georgia could have taken Michigan.
