Flushing Flag Football

As I mentioned in the post today from my main account, this past weekend @mrsbozz and I traveled a short distance down state to watch our niece and nephews play flag football. In the past my nephews have played, but it was through a different organization.

Our sister in law realized that there wasn't a program at the school district where their kids go, so she decided to start her own (with the help of some other parents). She figured why not keep the money in the district to help develop their football program.

It looks like it is going to pay off because in just the first weekend alone they had something like 25 teams running plays on the fields at the junior high school.

One of the cool things about this program is the fact that it is a co-ed program. Given the fact that it is flag football and not tackle, dad's don't have to worry about their sweet princess getting smeared into the grid iron by some overly aggressive boy.

I think we all know it's probably much more likely that a girl like my niece who has grown up with two older brothers would probably be the one hurting the boys! It was pretty cool to watch her out on the field. I've seen her play soccer before, but this was a different animal all together.

I hope she is able to gain some confidence from this sport to carry with her into her other sports.

The boys still outnumbered the girls by quite a significant margin, but it was still nice to see them out on the field. In my older nephews game, the boys even did a really good job of including them. At that age it would be very easy for them to just stick together, but they didn't.

Another cool thing about the game is the fact that all downs are played in the same direction, no matter what team you are on. It's sort of like half court basketball.

Given the fact that is was the first week of competition, I don't think they really did a thorough job of keeping score. I'm sure the kids probably remember how many touchdowns they did or didn't get, but the adults were spending more of their time just trying to keep things running smoothly.

I heard my sister in law saying that in the future she wants to have scoreboards at each of the fields as well as some other improvements.

I was actually really impressed by my older nephews performance on the field. He can throw one of the tightest spirals I have ever seen a 6th grader throw. It was quite impressive. Like I said, I didn't really keep score, but I think his team easily defeated the other team. They even had some good running plays as well.

I mentioned before that the adults were just trying to keep things running smoothly. My brother in law mentioned that the rule book is something like 37 pages long, so there is quite a bit of material to process.

It was a pretty nice way to spend a Saturday morning. The sun was out and it felt so good given the fact that there was a bit of a chill wind in the air still. In fact, @mrsbozz and I even got a little sunburned from the three hours we were out watching.
