American polar explorer

American polar explorer and U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Richard Byrd was born on October 25, 1888 in Winchester, Virginia.

Here is Byrd in 1947 during U.S. Navy Operation Highjump revisiting an old hut smoking 12-year old tobacco in a 12-year old corncob pipe which he had left at this Antarctic camp back in 1935 during an earlier expedition.
