To be honest , I believe that the NYSC should be abolished. Why? You may ask, let me tell you , INSECURITY! Yes, you heard me right, insecurity.
National Youth Service Corps(NYSC) is a program that has been set up by the Nigerian government to involve graduates in the nation building and the development of the country.
The rate of insecurity in the country has increased over the past few years. I have heard stories of how graduates went to serve their country and never came back. What do I mean by never came back? I mean they never returned to their homes. Their parents, friends, families and even lovers did not see them again. Their lives where cut short by unknown gun men. Some of them where even kidnapped, tortured and scarred for life.
These young men and women left their homes to different states in the country only to find themselves in different difficult situations they never imagined. With no help from nowhere and residing in a no man’s land , they are left with surviving for themselves and fighting for their own safety. Serving one’s father land should not be a death sentence. Lives and properties should be protected at all cost.
Young people should not be exposed to danger in the name of serving one’s father land. No amount of money can bring back life when lost. Parents should never have to bury their own children, brothers should not loose brothers, sisters should not loose sisters, lives should not be cut short due to insecurity and killings.

Let’s move away from that, another reason I think NYSC should be abolished is because of ROAD ACCIDENTS. It’s estimated that about 60% of coppers die due to road accidents especially when travelling to their state of posting or even when transporting to their place of primary assignment.
When my aunty was posted to Ekiti state to serve her country (NYSC), she came back with terrible stories to tell about her experience. But one story she told that caught my attention was the one she told me about a friend of hers she met in camp (Camp is a 3 weeks compulsory intensive training given to corp member by members of the military). Her friend who was from the Eastern part of Nigeria, serving in Southern Nigeria, Ekiti was involved in a ghastly motor accident where her right leg was completely damaged because it was crushed by a trailer that was also involved in the accident on her way to her place of primary assignment.
Thankfully, no life was lost but many were badly injured. She, being one of the victims spent her remaining days in the hospital while her family members ran around looking for help on how to complete her hospital bills. She spent several weeks in the hospital receiving treatment, fighting for her life. She did not only loose one year of her life she also lost the use of one of her legs. How sad! These and many more are reasons I believe NYSC should be abolished.
Put yourselves in her shoes, and in the shoes of her family members , would you still want NYSC to continue? I believe we have come to an agreement. I just graduated from university and in one year, I will be serving my country. Are all these what I will have to encounter? What would be my own story to tell?
