Mechanical one is analyzing complex systems, other solving via hands on, both would progress quicker using new technology where knowledge is pooled from both angles, I hear what you saying, working to evolve together.
Example is elderly with years of hands on experience writing up his knowledge to assist future generation.

Wow, yes - this is a great distinction, @joanstewart. Generational knowledge preservation is near to my heart. I worked on a project like this with a friend and it was so rewarding. Thanks for sharing.
