Homeschooling gives us the opportunity to teach our children good morals and values that the society will not intentionally teach. As we all know the moral values in our societies is dwindling on a daily basis, so it's our duty to help our children to be that example the world is looking for. Today's post will focus on non-verbal communications in our homes and it's usefulness in the presence of strangers who we don't know their motives towards us and our kids. Eye contact will be our focal point for today. Greetings from @salvadornkpara.

What's Eye Contact?
Eye contact occurs when two people look at each other's eyes at the same time. In humans, eye contact is a form of nonverbal communication and can have a large influence on social behavior.Source

Why Teaching Eye Contact to my Son
Children will always remain and behave as children and will always want to display some attitudes in from our strangers that'll make the visitors feel that they lack home training. One of the things I learnt from my mom is the usefulness of nonverbal communication both in the presence of visitors and when she doesn't want to talk much. My mom will always tell us as kids not to receive gifts from strangers who visit us in our house, but once the visitor invites us for a drink or snacks bought by my mom, you'll see us going towards his or her direction to accept the invitation. Once you're an offender you'll receive the beating of your life. So the easiest who to stop that was to use eye contact to inform us in what to do when strangers are in our sitting room.
Also due to numerous kidnapping and insecurity in our society today, there's need for the children to know some nonverbal communication signs in order to escape when there's danger. The child should know when to run from, stand and confront situations.
In Nigeria where I come from there are so many ills in our society that requires you to teach these nonverbal communication signs to your children. During festive seasons it's usually a tradition for families to visit their villages to spend the holidays. Most enemies of progress in form of extended uncle's and aunty's with ulterior motives might want to do some diabolic things against you and you family. In order not to make the visit feel bad you use the nonverbal communication signs to instruct your children what to do next.

Some Nonverbal Communication Signs and How they're Performed
The following are the nonverbal communication signs I taught my son:

  • once a visitor/stranger is in our house my children owes my the duty to constantly look at me or their mom for the next step to take.
  • once my eyes moves towards the bedroom, it means that my kid should go into the room and remain there until he's called or until the visitor leaves the house.
  • once I shake my head twice it means no or don't collect, but once I shake my head upwards and downwards it means take or receive the offer
  • this particular one every parent does it, once the parents face is sad towards the child, it means that the child has done something wrong and once the parent smile 😊😊😊 towards the child it means that everything is fine.

Finally, it's important we start teaching our kids these nonverbal communication signs using eye contact to help us give them instructions in the presence of strangers and visitors. Thanks for stopping by. What's your view about nonverbal communication signs?

Thank you.
Also the world is changing, so when they see and understand the signs they can take immediate actions.

Very interesting post ! I believe non verbal communication is as important, if not more, than verbal communication

This makes me remember the times when my father just used to look at us and we already know what to do (do not disturb him when there are visitors).

That's correct, if it worked for them and we enjoyed it, then it'll be wise to teach our children untime to enable them master it better. Nonverbal Communication signs are vital to kids upbringing whether they're little or in their adolescence. Thanks you for stopping by my friend.
