Even though my life looks hard at the moment, it’s very clear that it is much easier than it was for me a few years ago and for that I am very grateful. I remember how my life was before I started learning and working with digital skills. I had no direction whatsoever and was just moving where the storm forced me to. That period I had already spent two years studying a course I never chose, and when the stakes became high and my parents could no longer afford my fees I had to drop out. That was the moment I knew I had to take my life out of the hands of my parents because even though they meant well for me, I know me more than they would ever know me.

After the drop out, my dad managed to pull off some strings so I could work in the bank but I bluntly turned it down, I knew that if I could learn a skill I would be better off as a person. I did not even know what I wanted to learn, I just knew I was going to learn a skill. This caused a very big issue in my house that made my dad not talk to me for a year. It was not easy at all for me that year as my dad seemed to take his hands off anything that concerned me. My mum however supported me and introduced me to someone who does graphics design. This was how I started learning. But because of little or no support (my mum wasn’t working) I had to trek 7KM daily to and fro and most times on an empty stomach to reach my place of learning.
It was very difficult to even learn because I did not have a PC and it took almost two years to finally catch up. It was so bad that I had an ulcer in the process that nearly claimed my life. However, alongside graphics design I was able to learn social media management and that was how I got my first official job as a social media manager for a consulting firm. I did it with no certificate as I was a drop out but I believed in myself and thus my employers were impressed with me. That job gave me experience for one year before I returned to school after three years of staying at home. Well it’s been a long journey, but I am still going.
