Distractions are bound to pop in whether we prepare for them or not and in today's society where it seems like there's always something new to scramble the very concept of any form of concentration, staying focused is rapidly transforming into a difficult task.
Devices with access to the internet ranges as the number one source of diversions. The moment you try to engage in some sort of important task that requires total attentiveness and concentration, it turns into warfare where only the strong willed emerge victorious. It is either a notification pops up on your phone pushing you to pick up the device for confirmation which will eventually lead you straight to a catchy Instagram reel that will only end up wasting time without accomplishing the intended objective or procrastination becomes the other of the day. Either way whatever happens, it is clear that distractions are bound to occur thus one needs to device strategies to combat them whenever they arise.
Over the years, I have come to realize that two of my distractions are social media contents and movies both of which are consumed through my smartphone. Even as a student I could not study without watching an anime episode or gagging over something funny online and it was slowly distorting my academic performance. Something had to be done for me to regain full control of my life and for that very reason I went straight to work.
First thing I did was admit that these habits were major distractions that requires urgent solutions and not just sources of entertainment they might have started of as. This became the very beginning of my breakthrough and with that I started overloading my brain cells to produce different methods for these distractions regardless of their forms.
During this period, the clock alarm and reminder app on my phone became my best friends. The alarm was set a few minutes before any task and a reminder was attached to it with a message informing me not to get sidetracked by any unnecessary hindrances. Sometimes I would go as far as switching off the phone to avoiding going astray. These only worked for a handful of times before taking back to default settings and off I was back to the drawing board once again.
After numerous trial and errors, I finally found the perfection answer to this obstacle and it came in the best form I could ever hope for - Music. Since I was a massive lover of music, I started using my phone to listen to music anytime I had something important to do. It helps clear my head, lighten up my mood and the source of my distraction became a tool of concentration. Whether it was taking care of laundry chores, working out, cooking or even engaging in official duties, the sound of music keeps me in check. I got so accustomed to it that I could even study with earplugs jamming my favourite song.
The journey has not been an easy one and even till date I still get distracted every now and then regardless of my continuous efforts. Nevertheless I'll keep on fighting because I know a determined mind will always prevail.
