Old Tyres - Waste management needs a big reconsider

There are some products that are used heavily for one single time and then we don't have a facility to recycle them or they don't have a big value after that. Today I came across something like that. I had to change my car tyres. After 50k kilometres, looks like it is a good and safe practice to change tyres. Now I learnt a lot about all these things and I came to know that old tyres had no value in the market. Instead of leaving the tyre in the store itself, I brought it home. Every tyre costed about 70 dollars and I paid a total close to 300 dollars.

It was very sad to see that old tyres only go for scrap and nobody even busy old tyres. We pay close to 300 dollars for new tyres but the old tyres go for nothing. There are not enough attractive recycling options available with old tyres. That's when I was curious to read and understand about what happens to old tyres. Many countries dump then in a junkyard and there is no proper facility to recycle them. In some countries people make furniture out of old tyres and in some places people use old tyres in their garden. I also had a similar thought and that's why I also wanted to bring it home. Looks like it is very common that there is no facility to recycle old tyres.

Some countries burn the old tyres to create tar from it and use the Tar for other purpose. Some people try to create cement from old tyres that can be used for constructing houses. Developing nations don't have any great solution yet for old tyres. The high chance is that it just goes as scrap and stays without destruction. The major reason why recycling is not a possibility for tyres is that it is a combination of materials that are not biodegradable. It makes it hard to dispose the tyres. Burning them can pollute the environment and people still do that.

Hopefully some developed countries will come up with a facility to make use of old tyres properly and if that happens we should be able to handle that waste properly without polluting the environment. Let's hope for the best.
