Hydrogen fueled train is the future in Indian Railway

This year the first Hydrogen fueled train was launched in India. Now due to this India is not the first but one of the countries that is using hydrogen as the fuel for the commute. They claim this to be a clean commute and recently a report was published saying that 36444 kg of carbon emissions were reduced so far and this hydrogen fuel emits only water vapour as the discharge which is good for the environment.

One thing that I'm not clear about is the operational cost and manufacturing cost. I'm not sure if Hydrogen as a fuel is the most efficient thing cost wise because a heavy effort might e required to create hydrogen fuel. I have not don't any research yet in that. I will do that later. The trains are designed to be operated at a maximum speed of 110 km/h but they usually run at 75 km/h. The train is currently operating in Haryana from Jind to Sonipet. There are plans to expand this to other places in India as well after the current success. The target is more towards places where the availability of electricity is limited. So instead of using Diesel or other fuel, it is better to use Hydrogen as the fuel.

It is also claimed that Hydrogen is the cleanest fuel that is available today and the trains are also operated without any noise and emissions. I'm not sure about the safety aspects of hydrogen fuel as the concept is that when it gets exposed to Oxygen, it can produce enormous amount of energy which is what becomes the fuel. I still have a open question in mind on how they make Hydrogen fuel. Is it something that is prepared easily or is it something that is available as a fossil fuel.

Another interesting thing about this project is that this project is totally built in-house which showcases the engineering potential in the country.
