When I was presenting @liotes at #BuzzParty2024 in Hamburg, the biggest part of my "presentation" was about HIVE in general... The title was Community Without the Community, but there was a lot of talk about curation, retention, building our accounts, decentralization... (stay tuned for the official recording that should come out soon) What made me happy the most was the questions from the audience, which showed caring from experienced Hivians about the platform and some problems that we have...
One of the biggest problems is retention... I know that most people think that the biggest problem is onboarding, but the truth is that there are a lot of accounts created on HIVE, and there is a huge percentage of inactive accounts... Even when we realize that problem, we tend to blame it on others... Everything is perfect with the platform... We are doing everything right... They have no idea what they are doing... Those are probably the most popular "excuses"...
I don't know about you, but I was taught that it's not a problem to make mistakes, it's a problem if you deny them and ignore them... And to be honest with you, we have a huge problem with that on HIVE... Those who have a voice, unfortunately, don't like to accept their mistakes and don't like to be wrong (who does?)... They like to talk, talk and talk, urging for attention, without the broader vision... Solving their personal problems, but without thinking of the big picture... And usually, something like this happens...
Si vas a decir lo que quieres, tambiΓ©n vas a oΓr
lo que no quieres.
AntologΓa de la poesΓa lΓrica griega
This is a quote from a book that my son showed me yesterday... I took the book, opened a random page, and saw this quote... What a great fit! Translated to English, it would be something like If you want to say what you want, you will also hear something that you don't want.
Isn't that true? We like to brag, we like to show people how to do things, we know everything the best... But, when someone else shows us a different way, a different path, even if it is better, we will try to ignore it, or just silence it! That's something that happened many times, to almost everyone, and many times in our history...
Anyway, the main topic of this post is connected with all that, but I would like to be more "practical"... Back to that presentation in Hamburg... The discussion in the QUESTIONS part of the presentation went into the direction of building personal accounts on HIVE... How to do it "right" and how to keep users on the platform... As you probably know, I'm a big supporter of HIVE POWER, as in a nutshell, it is the most important "tool" that Hivians have on their blogging journey!
To be more specific, the topic went into the direction of CURATION... We were talking about big curation projects on HIVE, not only from the view of the GOOD things that they bring to people but also about the NEGATIVE sides that can arise... I saw a great post by @achim03 about decentralization on HIVE, where he discussed some important points... Curation is great, but the curation with your PERSONAL HIVE POWER is the BEST!!! There is no discussion about that and I think that everyone is aware of that, but...
Now we are getting to the point of this rant post... Everyone would like to have more power... Not just on HIVE, but in politics, in life, etc. But, there is that corny saying that kicks us in the butt every time we want more... More power means more responsibility!
Do you want more power on HIVE? Then stop delegating your HivePower to others and make good use of it!! Curate content manually with your HivePower and you will do a HUGE favor not just to the platform, not just to a better distribution of tokens, not just for a better decentralization, but also to YOURSELF and your IMAGE on HIVE! You will be more respected, and more appreciated, as you did the same... You respected and appreciated others by caring for them, by upvoting them...
It's not the problem of big curation accounts that have millions of HivePower... They didn't FORCE YOU to delegate your hard-earned HivePower to them... You did it yourself... You clicked on the DELEGATE button and confirmed the transaction... Why you did do that? Let me guess...
You were lazy to manually curate content because you "have no time" for that, and because you don't want to take that additional responsibility... Someone else knows better and they will do better than me... Are you sure about that? Do they know YOUR friends on HIVE? Will they support people that you like to read and support?
Stop whining about how somebody else's fault is that you are not upvoted better, that nobody likes you, that you are the victim, and how big whales are there just to screw you up! Manually curate with your HivePower, tell others to do the same, and you could expect different results... EMPOWER yourself and your friends by supporting them! Do not feed the beast and complain when you are served on the plate as lunch...
Thank you for your time,
~ph~
A bonus song for those who got to the end of the post... You can listen to it while you are commenting down below your point of view... π

I think engagement is the key to retaining new members and also building communities. This post today in the Shadow Hunters Community expresses something I hear often. We all need to put more focus on engaging with new users!
Building community is the heart of Hive. That's a good point in the post.
Agree with you that engagement is the key and it was always like that... Hive is a bit different compared to other social media as people come here without knowing more than 1 person on the chain... It's hard to expect that anyone can get 10 friends on the first post, but also there should be a healthy "system" of showing newbies where to go, and how to start... It sounds ridiculous in some way as it looks like taking a small child by hand on the street, but there is a need for something like that...
On the other side, engaging just for the sake of engaging has no sense in the same way as creating posts just to create... Don't know the secret formula of "showing to people" the real values of engagement... I suppose that's personal and unique for everyone...
Thanks for the comment! It made me think :)
The Shadow Hunters Community is friendly and easy for newbees to enter contests. It's not about fine photography and they only must write 50 words. By entering they begin to learn how to create a post. They must learn how to copy their link and include it in a comment on the contest post. All babysteps, but each one gives confidence that they can do this! We have 13 winners every week, with our goal being to spread prizes around within the community, not necessarily award the best photos. As the contest has grown it has become more difficult for me to always write meaningful comments, but everyone gets a vote and a comment from me and from the community account. Sometimes it is the first time their efforts have received any response at all. I believe there are a few contests and communities that encourage new users to stay on Hive!

You shattered everything I believed in. Since I always thought, I was right, and everybody else was wrong π π π Now you say the power is in us, or shall be in us. You say we have to work. You say, I shall not blame everything to others! but but but it is their fault, every time, always π π π
On a serious note: I 100% agree with you. If we don't like the status quo, we shall seek the power in ourselves to at least change what is in our control. regarding HIVE, that is the HP we have, to use it as we see fit, but perhaps not take the easy route. In the end, when everybody takes the easy route, we end up with auto voting + some curation teams distributing all the newly minted HIVE and some of the HBD.
To all those who think you don't have the time available for manual curation. Download the Ecency smartphone app. Follow all the accounts you like. Use your short breaks and waiting time during your day to go through your 'follow' list and slap your vote on those posts you like. You don't even have to comment, but preferably you drop some comments here and there. The latter isn't difficult, since you may have something in mind when reading an article. Just write those in the comments section, whatever it is, and hit the send button.
Great message! And - again - great preso you held in Hamburg. For a reason, it triggered such discussions with the audience.
You see... It's not always that we have an opposite view! π
AMEN! π π π
I just mentioned somewhere in the other comment reply that it's not that big deal to vote to 11 posts per day... If we can't do that, what's the point of the social network... that is 11 interactions... 11 clicks...
Thanks for your support during the event and always! Appreciate it...
Btw. I'm already looking for at least a 2-BEDROOM accommodation for the HiveFest... π

I think that the number of new account is not important here, whether they are in tune with HIVE as well as consistent members or not is more important. For this, the quality posts of newbies should be supported if we want new members.
I do agree until a certain level with your statement, but on the other side, newbies should also learn that Hive isn't a money-making machine... I mean, for the sake of newbies, the learning curve has to exist... Not saying that quality posts shouldn't be supported, but that if they are coming form new or old users shouldn't make a bit of change...
I would say that EDUCATION about HIVE should be at a much higher level than it is...
Exactly five months ago, as a newbie to Hive, I found your #HHHlive Ep.5 where I got some important information about HP delegation and how it is not/is good for a newbie with a small amount of hard-earned HP.
Since then I've been doing the following: daily posts, engaging on Hive (sometimes on Waves), commenting and replying to comments, voting personally with my HP... and you forgot to mention today's PUD π, in which I regularly participate, at least with 10 Hive.
I don't know if all that you wrote worked out for you, but if I had to start from scratch, I would do it like that again... It is a slow process, but the right people come to your "space"...
Happy HivePUD!
And HivePUM! π
I think taking the power of curation into our own hands is a great thing - one thing that Iβve done myself thankfully. I used to delegate all my hive power away to curation groups thinking it would earn me more rewards but in reality it didnβt when you factor in the inflation rate of hive. The curation groups are taking advantage in a way of peoples laziness and delegating responsibility to others. They are making a profit which I guess is fine because someone needs to but I donβt think many people realize itβs better to do it yourself. Iβve been following a curation group instead of giving them my hive power and have enjoyed it quite a bit!
I 100% agree with all that you said... Plus, curating others manually, shows appreciation toward the others and creates new followers, or better-said new friendships! That's a power that people easily forget in all those APR calculations...
Thanks for taking the time to check out my post!
Late Night Commenting π :
I did enjoy the talk and it was interesting to discover that communities can sometimes struggle to survive if they don't have so much support. Organic growth of the members of the community and curation projects although they take time, seem the only long term option imo. I would also say that although it may seem to take a long time to build, things can start to snowball once you gain traction, so it is worth it.
I mentioned in Discord the "losing-fate-phase" and somehow I can see it happening... By looking under the surface, I saw more and more people "quitting", being disappointed, etc.
The problem is always the same and you covered it in your comment... You wrote about the long-term building, creating a stable base for the future, which is opposite to our "microwave society" and way of thinking... Those who came for the "wrong reason" will leave the first...
Great post as is always kind. of agree with you, on your points. Thanks for sharing. Yes, I have seen a lot of people who have power, but they support random posts. They do not even care what the content is. I think this is. not a good way to curate. and I think this is the reason why many people are delegating their power to other curation accounts because they don't have time or they don't even want to invest there time here. a lot of accounts are dead here, it feels sad to see that.
But if you are onboarding new people or the. People who you know mostly your friends, if you have your power, then that is gonna encourage them in the early days. And that is necessary.
Big accounts will do whatever they want with their OWN HivePower and we can't change that... But, we can change if some big CURATION account with delegated HP is voting for the same people over and over again... We can UNDELEGATE our HP and use it by ourselves... I know very well how time-consuming it is to curate content, and you as a curator know that very well, but that is the only healthy way to grow your friends and your community on HIVE!
Showing by example is a good way to motivate people to do something that could help them... Many times people don't understand (or just don't think) why is something important and good for them until someone shows them...
Thanks for your thoughtful comment!
I think the problem to keep people is curation, big and famous accounts get big curation out of crappy posts just because they are big and known, a small account can make an amazing content and get 0 cause he is a noname
You are right... That is the problem... But, with pointing out fingers and complaining we will not get anywhere... With curating with our OWN Hive Power we have a chance... It is a slow process, but it is the only way that is beneficial for content creators and content consumers in the long term... I truly believe in that!
I stopped posting and started only curating for this reason too...
The retention problem is definitely there. I have got one other person onto Hive but they didn't stay here for too long and they were mainly interested in Actifit or Splinterlands. Eventually they felt tired of it and moved on.
I prefer to curate by myself and I think building HP is a good thing. I have never powered down and I don't plan on doing so either.
Doing just 1-2 things on HIVE can be boring, especially Actifit and Splinterlands... When you get bored by the game, you quit... With Actifit is probably similar... If you don't find the community to share things/walks/experiences, you will get bored and quit... That's normal...
But, it's important to say that it really depends on what your friend was searching for here on HIVE. If he searched for community and friends, he would probably find some... If he searched for a quick buck on those two things, I suppose that's not what he got...
I can say that it was one of the greatest articles I have ever read. As you said, admitting the mistakes we made is really a great virtue when you think about it. This nice article motivated me, thank you very much.ππ
Thank you very much for your kind words! I hope that something from the post will help you here on HIVE, or in life! πβ€οΈ
Thank you very much
I agree, but people should be free to do what they want with their Hive Power. They can generate passive income by delegating to different curation trails, just as they can by staking HBD, so I would be careful here.
Of course, manual curation of content is very time-consuming if you don't want to be a comment troll. There is a need to balance use between everything Hive offers. The first step towards this is engagement and communication with others.
I completely agree with you that everyone has the freedom to do whatever he/she wants with their HivePower... But, this wasn't the topic of the post... The point was that everyone should be RESPONSIBLE for their actions and accept the consequences...
If I delegate all my HP to a whale account, I have no right to complain about the centralization of the chain... It's ridiculous to point fingers if you are the one who is contributing to creating a problem! And I see a lot of that... People would like to get tons of upvotes, but they don't want to do the same for others...
As well as you, I know very well how time-consuming curation can be... Everyone who was doing it knows that well... But, on the other side, if you want to use your HP to the limits, you "only" have to upvote 11-12 posts per day... If you are on the chain for more than a year, you should have a lot more friends than that on HIVE... and the curation becomes a bit easier...
I 100% agree with you on this... That's why I do these kinds of posts... Maybe I'm not always right with my observation, but the discussion in the comment section helps a lot in getting the whole picture... and it is a kind of communication with others providing important information about HIVE!
Thanks for the comment and sorry for the long reply... :)
It's ok, long answer :)
I must reiterate the same point. Responsibility is the same thing; it's up to each individual to decide what they will and will not do here.
Again, it's their own business that people are immature or relatively inexperienced and then cry about something if it does not go as planned.
You know the fine print in crypto - it's not financial advice...

When people complain that Hive isn't decentralised enough and that few have a lot of power, I think that this is the very aspect that they should think about. It's easy to complain about others behaviours but we should think about who gave them the power in the first place...
It is true that HIVE isn't decentralized as many of us would like it... But complaining about it and doing nothing, or providing some constructive criticism will lead nowhere... Also, trying to "change" big whales will not work either... THe only way how we can do it is to change our way of doing and take the first steps... and start walking...
Will be looking forward to the official recording though. I think retention will always be an issue, we still don't have that smart and simple answer that will do the magic at the moment and that will be less controversial.
Oh, it would be great that we have that magic wand and do some miracles... π
As we don't have it, I suppose that we have to do it in the hard way... π Making mistakes, trying to improve, and doing it again in a different way...
That's right, I love that line, man. You can't say whatever you want, life doesn't work like that. And it's obvious that our biggest problem is attracting more users here.
As for delegation, I always think a small amount can't hurt, but it's not a good idea to give the whole cake to someone else to eat. You'll be hungry at the end.
It's interesting that you understood it like that... :) I understood it in other way around... You CAN say whatever you want, but you have to be ready to accept the responsibility for what you said and the consequences of the words that you said... In my opinion, that is freedom of speech...
Freedom of speech isn't shitting over some people and hiding behind the keyboard, or switching off your computer... π
Nicely said! I like it!
Thanks for the comment!
I totally agree with this. I can accept that it's ok to delegate a little bit if we want to support some project but we have to be responsible for how our HP is used and the best way to do it is by curating manually.
Also, I see so many users on Hive who consider themselves to be only βcontent creatorsβ and make no effort to engage or build their accounts to support others on Hive but expect to receive great rewards. I think that's not the blockchain we're betting on, at least not me.
Anyway, great post!
AMEN! π
I like to say that HIVE is a two-way street and that's the biggest difference compared to Twitter/YT or some other social media platform... It is much more down to the "physical contact", in a way that content creators and content consumers are at the same level, at the same playfield... On other platforms, creators are on the top of the pyramid, but here, it's not like that... Both sides are equally important!
Yes, there are big accounts supporting content "randomly" showing a bad example that it is possible without engaging with others, but in most cases, it is a two-way street and engagement is the key... I suppose that we have to show that by example...
Thanks for your kind words!
Interesting quote and yeah, people have different opinions and ways to approach something. Sometimes we can face the mirrored version of ourselves in this vast world π€. !PIZZA
I know that's the truth and I can't deny it too despite it being a negative word to me π€£. Maybe after I'm not working again, I'll have more time and won't be lazy to see more interesting posts. Delegation will be the last option at that time π. For now, I'm just curating with around 10% of my total HP in my free time in the middle of work.
Tbh, I still can't comprehend someone who can always be active on social media. Sorry about that π

@ph1102! You Are Alive so I just staked 0.1 $ALIVE to your account on behalf of @ cursephantom. (2/30)
The tip has been paid for by the We Are Alive Tribe through the earnings on @alive.chat, feel free to swing by our daily chat any time you want, plus you can win Hive Power (2x 50 HP) and Alive Power (2x 500 AP) delegations (4 weeks), and Ecency Points (4x 50 EP), in our chat every day.
Oh, yes... That's a great way to comprehend that saying... π
I suppose that my excuse is that I'm not using "normal" social media and I spend most of my time on HIVE... π Which isn't a "normal" social media platform... π
For me, the culmination of my efforts, the cherry on top of the cake, is going to a "real-life" meetup with other Hivians and having fun... :) I wouldn't know any of those people if there was no Hive and I appreciate that a lot!
Now if we say what we want and we get what we donβt want, you know thatβs gonna hurt us right? So does that stylishly means we should not say what weβve got on our minds?
Hehehehe... That means that the world isn't just you, but also your surroundings... You are part of it, and not the whole world... It is based on action and reaction... If you say something, you take responsibility for what you said and the consequences of it...
That's how the adult world works... We are not children, but many do act like that...

It is a fact that when we know that we want to achieve that thing, then we will work day and night on it and one day there will come a time when we will work hard to achieve that thing. If we do it, there will be so much happiness on that day that we cannot even imagine.
