Three Tune Tuesday and Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! I know to many of our Mexican members it's not all that of an important date, but for many countries including the United States do consider it an unofficial holiday. The last time I mentioned the date @jza tried to inform me that here were more important dates in Mexican history, and I agree there are. But the Mexican Army defeating the French on May 5, 1862 and decisively removing the Second French Empire in the region is the origin of the date. Yes I did say second, because there was a first in the past. Several nations have held claim to Mexico beyond the Spanish before complete Mexican independence.

To kick it off I want to share a nice Mexican gold coin, not mine personally, although I do own quite a few of these, but they are all stored away in secure storage. It's the Cinco Pesos, it's a pretty coin:

APMEX.com

The obverse (front) has the national arms of the state of Mexico which bears a golden eagle with a rattlesnake in it's beak while perched on a prickly pear cactus. On the reverse (back) is the portrait of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. He was a Catholic priest that led the move for Mexican Independence and is considered the father of the nation. These coins contain 0.1205 Troy ounces of gold and are relatively inexpensive to pick up if you are investing in gold as the premiums are pretty low. They were some of the first ones that I purchased early on. Right now the asking price on these is about $620!

It's hard to believe that coin is almost 120 years old and still looks almost as good as new... Moving on, since it is Tuesday it's time for another Three Tune Tuesday. But first off, I want to say thank you to @ablaze for starting and continuing to sponsor this fun weekly event where you can share three songs that you enjoy. One lucky participant will win some HSBI units, you can't have too many of those! So if you don't already participate feel free to jump in, just use the tag #ttt or #threetunetuesday and it's never a bad idea to do a shoutout to @ablaze .

Let's jump into some music for Cinco de May!

Richie Valens

Born Richard Velenzuela in a suburb of Los Angeles, California in 1941 to Mexican indigenous parents who migrated to the United States. This young, talented self-taught musician rose to fame at age 16 with hits like "Come On, Let's Go", "Donna" and "La Bamba". "La Bamba" made him a pioneer in Spanish-speaking rock n' roll and sold well over one million copies. However, career was cut short while touring with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper as their private small plane crashed in a snowstorm In Iowa on February 3, 1959. He was just seventeen years of age.

He has since been inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame and received his own star on the California Walk of Fame. His guitar style influenced generations of guitarists including Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Led Zeppelin. His career was short but his influence is still felt in rock n' roll until this day. I chose his classic "La Bamba" to share today:

Selena

Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was born in Texas to Mexican-American parents in 1971. She launched her career at age ten but struggled to break into the male led Tejano Music scene in the early 80's, until she won Tejano singer of the year in 1987. Now often referred to the as the "Queen of Tejano Music", she didn't speak any Spanish until she was forced to sing in the language by her father. She became such an incredibly popular artist that in July of 1995 she produced a hugely successful crossover album into English. Sadly, it was released posthumously as she was murdered on March 31, 1995 by Yolanda Saldívar, who had been managing Selena's boutiques, after allegations she had been embezzling funds.

So yet another rising star who died too young at age 23. But she made some great music over the years, and the movie about her life in 1997 made Jennifer Lopez a huge start! This song is called "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom":

Marco Antonio Solis

For the third spot there were many contenders but I decided to go with a singer from Mexico. Marco Antonio Solis has been on the Latin American Music scene since the late 1990's and produced many hits over the years. He's even received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as one the most influential and successful artists in Latin American music over the last three decades.

Today I'll be sharing a song he performed in the Festival de Viña del Mar, Chile in 2016 called Si No Te Hubieras Ido" (If you hadn't left). Incidentally, it's a festival I've attended several times, and it's always been a lot of fun! If you ever get the chance to visit Viña del Mar it's well worth it, a truly beautiful location just north of Santiago, Chile.

That will do it for this Three Tune Tuesday Cinco de Mayo edition. I hope you enjoyed the selections and please feel free to leave any questions or comments below. As always thank you so much for all of your support, it's deeply appreciated. Have a great Tuesday everyone!

I totally forgot it was Cico De Mayo. I wonder what the Spanish class is doing down the hall today. I'm kind of surprised I didn't see the song "Eres Tu" in your list. Tommy Boy pretty much made that a classic. Personally, I love Quizas, Quizas, Quizas and not just because it gives you a segway to Cake! Richie Valens was amazing such a tragic story. Selena too for that matter.

I decided to go with some fun one today, "Eres Tu" there are so many versions, and "Quizas, Quizas, Quizas" was technically a Cuban song so couldn't be included... Although it's an awesome one! Richie Valens was an amazing artist, just imagine what he could have achieved if he lived longer. But the same could be said of Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morison, although drugs did them in!

I guess I didn't realize it was Cuban. Very cool. Stupid drugs!

Happy Cinco de Mayo! That is a day we never really hear about in the UK. What a shame about Selena, I remember that, so sad and she had such a bright future ahead of her.

It really was a shame, I remember that day well... She didn't even get to see how successful her English crossover album became. Richie Valens was way before our time, but what a future he could have had if he hadn't gone down with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper!

Yes sad too about Richie Valens and of course Buddy Holly. 17 is so young. Another shame. Life is full of them
