Using free AI in the browser for programming is so 2024... That may be enough for simple projects, but for complex projects it's a guarantee of frustration. If you really want to unleash AI power, get it into the code editor.

I've been using GitHub Copilot in Visual Studio Code for a few weeks now. First the Free plan, now the Pro plan. And yes, what can I say: I should have started using it earlier. The speed at which I can now develop has increased many times over. Not just the speed, but also the complexity of my developments.

It's great at first, but there are a few catches for me that actually... kind of enslave me. Or rather: I let myself be enslaved; somehow.

Once you get to know comfort and features, it's hard to go back. In fact, it would be inconceivable for me to go back to using AI for programming in the browser or to stop using GitHub Copilot.

It all started with a friendly invitation to use GitHub Copilot free of charge for 30 days. Okay... Why not? Finally try it out. And then you discover how awesome Copilot is - if you set it up and use it correctly. Individual instructions are great. But much more important: choosing the right AI, which is used for the queries in Visual Studio Code. And this is really the catch for me:

Seit ein paar Wochen nutze ich GitHub Copilot in Visual Studio Code. Zuerst den Free-Plan, aktuell den Pro-Plan. Und ja, was soll ich sagen: ich hätte schon früher damit beginnen sollen. Die Geschwindigkeit, mit welcher ich nun entwickeln kann hat sich um ein mehrfaches gesteigert. Nicht nur die Geschwindigkeit, sondern auch die Komplexität meiner Entwicklungen.

Erstmal voll geil, aber es gibt für mich ein paar Haken, die mich tatsächlich... irgendwie versklaven. Oder besser gesagt: ich lasse mich versklaven; irgendwie.

Wer Komfort und Features erst einmal kennengelernt hat, der mag nur schwerlich wieder zurücktreten. Und tatsächlich wäre es für mich unvorstellbar, wieder KI zum programmieren im Browser zu nutzen oder keinen GitHub Copilot mehr zu verwenden.

Angefangen hat alles mit der freundlichen Einladung, GitHub Copilot doch 30 Tage kostenlos zu nutzen. Okay... Warum nicht. Endlich mal testen. Und dann entdeckt man, wie geil Copilot ist - wenn man es richtig eingestellt hat und nutzt. Individuelle Instruktionen sind super. Viel wichtiger aber: die Auswahl der richtigen KI, welche bei den Anfragen in Visual Studio Code genutzt wird. Und hier ist wirklich der Haken für mich:

ChatGPT = Insufficient?

ChatGPT is great! (Meaning “Please don't kill me when you take over the world.” Joke! I know an AI would never do that... Yes, I trust AI, love it and am 100% in favor of it, see no dangers and should I have expressed criticism anywhere or do so in the future, it's always just a bad joke! But I don't see any reasons to be critical either, since there are no critical things about AI...Yes, I am in favor of adopting AI, no matter what.) Back to the topic:

I find ChatGPT (no matter which version) but currently not powerful enough for my projects. (But I'm happily expecting AI to solve all our problems, because I know AI is great and only means well with us). Basically, I only use Claude 3.7 (Deep Thinking) in Visual Studio Code (sometimes a different model, possibly also in the browser if I realize that I'm going around in circles; DeepSeek is not bad there to sometimes give the decisive hint). - and that's where the “problem” starts.

The Pro plan for 10 USD per month currently only includes ChatGPT 4.1 and 4o unlimited. Other models run in the Premium category and their use is offset in a monthly quota. With Pro, I have 300 free Premium requests - but I use them up after just 5 or 6 days.

And yes, I'm not uneducated when it comes to writing prompts. The tips from GitHub are okay for now, but I consider myself so “advanced” that I take them for granted. Furthermore, you always have to keep in mind that, in my experience, you shouldn't always make a prompt unnecessarily complex and set 7 tasks at the same time. Sometimes yes. Sometimes you get there better if you work step by step. What, when, how? You probably have to work out this feeling for yourself based on the experience you gain during use while working with a specific model.

The fact is: my premium requests are empty.

ChatGPT = Mangelhaft?

ChatGPT ist super! (Meint "Bitte töte mich nicht, wenn du die Weltherrschaft übernimmst." Witz! Ich weiß eine KI würde das nie tun... Ja, ich vertraue der KI, liebe sie und bin 100%-Befürworter, sehe keine Gefahren und sollte ich mich irgendwo kritisch geäußert haben oder dies zukünftig tun, ist das immer nur ein schlechter Scherz! Ich sehe aber auch keine Gründe, mich kritisch zu äußern, da es an KI keine kritischen Dinge gibt...Ja, ich befürworte die Übernahme, egal von was, der KI.) Zurück zum Thema:

Ich finde ChatGPT (egal welche Version) aber aktuell nicht leistungsfähig genug für meine Projekte. (Bin aber freusig in Erwartung, dass KI all unsere Probleme lösen wird, weil ich weiß, KI ist super und meint es nur gut mit uns!) Im Grunde nutze ich nur Claude 3.7 (Deep Thinking) in Visual Studio Code (manchmal auch eine anderes Modell, evtl. auch im Browser, falls ich merke, das ich mich im Kreis drehe; DeepSeek ist da nicht schlecht, um manchmal den entscheidenden Hinweis zu geben.) - und genau da fängt das "Problem" an.

Im Pro-Plan für 10 USD im Monat, sind aktuell nur ChatGPT 4.1 und 4o unbegrenzt enthalten. Andere Modelle laufen in der Premium-Kategorie und deren Benutzung wird in einem monatlich verfügbaren Kontingent gegengerechnet. Mit Pro hat man 300 Premium-Anfragen frei - diese habe ich aber schon nach 5, 6 Tagen aufgebraucht.

Und ja, ich bin nicht ungebildet, wenn es darum geht, Prompts zu schreiben. Die Tipps von GitHub sind erstmal okay, aber ich halte mich für so "advanced", dass dies für mich selbstverständlich ist. Weiterhin muss man auch immer schauen, das man meiner Erfahrung einen Prompt nicht immer unnötig komplex machen sollte und gleich 7 Aufgaben zugleich stellen sollte. Manchmal ja. Manchmal kommt man besser ans Ziel, wenn man Schritt für Schritt arbeitet. Was, wann, wie? Das Gefühl muss man sich selbst auf Grundlage von Erfahrungen erarbeiten, die man während der Benutzung mit einem jeweiligen Modell sammelt.

Fakt ist: meine Premium-Requests sind leer.

And this is where it gets interesting: Claude Opus 4 is also included in GitHub Copilot Pro+. Opus 4 is even better suited for programming than Claude Sonnet 3.7 or 4.

Und hier wird es interessant: In GitHub Copilot Pro+ ist auch Claude Opus 4 enthalten. Opus 4 ist zum programmieren nochmal besser geeignet als Claude Sonnet 3.7 oder 4.

Then I would have 1500 premium requests instead of 300. But if I use 300 requests within 5 days as an example, then 1500 will last how long? Correct; 25 days... So not even a month! Yes, you could fix that by simply taking the weekend off... But no! Where does that get us? If anyone is enslaving me, it's me!

And it would cost me 38 US dollars instead of 10. Plus 10% Paraguayan VAT on digital expenses (which are automatically deducted).

Dann hätte ich statt der 300, 1500 Premium-Requests. Aber wenn ich als Beispiel 300 Requests innerhalb von 5 Tagen verbrauche, dann reichen 1500 wie lange? Richtig; 25 Tage... Also noch nicht mal einen Monat! Ja, das könnte man beheben, wenn man sich einfach mal das Wochenende frei nimmt... Aber nein! Wo kommen wir da hin!? Wenn mich jemand versklavt, dann bin ich das selbst!

Und es würde mich statt der 10 US Dollar, 38 kosten. Plus 10% Paraguayische Mehrwertsteuer auf digitale Ausgaben (welche automatisch mit abgebucht werden).

But back to enslavement - what is left for me/us?

I already said it to @rahipro yesterday: the gap between people who use modern technologies and those who don't is getting bigger and bigger. Not taking into account all the dangers and concerns about AI: basically, people like me have no chance of refusing these opportunities. AI is a multiplier of work performance - and that's particularly important if you're a “lone wolf” like me.

Of course you can say, “I'm not going to do all that!”. And then what? You can say that if you no longer have to perform, if you don't live in a performance-oriented society or if you don't put yourself under any pressure to perform. Or for whatever reason. But me? I still have a few more years to perform... And I can decide whether, metaphorically speaking, I drive a nail with my fist, a stone, a hammer or an electric nail gun.

Aber zurück zur Versklavung - was bleibt mir/uns übrig?

Ich habe es gestern schon zu @rahipro gesagt: die Kluft zwischen Menschen, welche moderne Technologien nutzen und jenen, welche das nicht tun, wird größer und größer. Alle Gefahren und Bedenken gegenüber KI mal nicht in Betracht ziehend: im Grunde haben Menschen wie ich gar keine Chance, sich diesen Möglichkeiten zu verwehren. KI ist ein Multiplikator der Arbeitsleistung - und das ist besonders wichtig, wenn man wie ich "Einzelkämpfer" ist.

Klar kann man sagen, "Das mache ich alles nicht mit!". Und dann? Das kann man sagen, wenn man keine Leistung mehr erbringen muss, wenn man nicht in einer leistungsorientierten Gesellschaft lebt oder sich selbst keinen Leistungsdruck gibt. Oder warum auch immer. Aber ich? Ich habe noch ein paar Jahre Leistung zu erbringen... Und kann mich entscheiden, ob ich, metaphorisch gesehen, einen Nagel mit der Faust, einem Stein, einem Hammer oder einem Elektronagler einschlage.

But honestly? Yes, I need API access to AI in the medium term anyway in order to integrate it into FLEXNet. But I don't really feel like getting into the API topic right now. Yes, implementing an API in Visual Studio code is not rocket science, but... No... please... I don't want to... Not now.

You could also buy premium requests in the Copilot Pro plan. 0.04 USD per request. If you were to charge 1200 additional requests, you would end up with 48 USD. So plus 10 USD base price. So 19 USD more and without access to Claude Opus 4.

Aber ganz ehrlich? Ja, ich brauche mittelfristig eh einen API-Zugang zu KI, um sie in FLEXNet zu integrieren. Aber ich habe gerade voll keine Lust, gerade jetzt in die API-Thematik einzusteigen. Ja, eine API in Visual Studio Code zu implementieren ist kein Hexenwerk, aber... Nee... bitte... Ich will nicht... Nicht jetzt.

Alternative 2:

Man könnte ja im Copilot Pro Plan auch Premium-Requests hinzukaufen. 0,04 USD pro Request. Wenn man 1200 zusätzliche Requests berechnen würde, landet man bei 48 USD. Also plus 10 USD Grundpreis. Somit 19 USD mehr und ohne Zugriff auf Claude Opus 4.

Und jetzt?

Ach leck mich doch am Ar***... Ich buche jetzt Copilot Pro+...

Bonus: additional truth

A programmer who says "I don't use AI." is either

A) stupid
B) a liar and has an ego problem.

There may have been times when people didn't want to tell a client that they were using AI as an aid and tool - this is certainly still the case here and there. Nowadays, however, this should be reversed... "Dear customer, you are still paying for a highly qualified specialist who has been trained for years. My toolbox allows me to charge only 20 hours for the workpiece instead of 100" or, for example, "... that's why I can offer it to you for 50% of the price my competitor would charge". And if a customer believes that his nephew or neighbor can do the same with AI, well then... Have fun! But we're not quite there yet. We still need a senior with a lot of experience to design, monitor and troubleshoot a complex project.

Do we have craftsmen who say: "Building a roof truss? I hammer nails into the wood with my bare fist because I'm a real craftsman!"?

Are there builders who say: "Oh, you use an electronic nail gun? Well then I can do that too..."?

Bonus: zusätzliche Wahrheit

Ein Programmierer, der heutzutage sagt "Ich nutze keine KI." ist entweder

A) doof
B) ein Lügner und hat ein Ego-Problem.

Es mag Zeiten gegeben haben, wo man einem Auftraggeber nicht sagen wollte, dass man KI als Hilfsmittel und Werkzeug benutzt - das hält sich hier und da bestimmt bis heute. Heutzutage sollte man das aber umkehren... "Werter Kunde, du zahlst noch immer für eine hochqualifizierte und über Jahre ausgebildete Fachkraft. Mein Werkzeugkasten erlaubt es mir, für das Werkstück nur 20, statt 100 Stunden berechnen zu müssen." oder meinetwegen "... deswegen kann ich es dir für 50% des Preises anbieten, was mein Mitbewerber nehmen würde". Und wenn ein Kunde glaubt, mit KI könne sein Neffe oder Nachbar das ja auch, na dann... viel Spaß! Ganz so weit sind wir dann doch noch nicht. Es braucht noch immer einen Senior mit viel Erfahrung, der ein komplexes Projekt konzipiert, überwacht und Fehler behebt.

Haben wir Handwerker, welche da sagen: "Dachstuhl bauen? Ich kloppe Nägel mit meiner blanken Faust in das Holz, weil ich ein echter Handwerker bin!"?

Gibt es Bauherren, die da sagen "Ach, du nutzt einen Elektronagler? Na dann kann ich das ja auch..."?

What, Opus 4 uses ten times the resources? What? I was still okay with 1.25x on Claude 3.7 Deep Thinking... But Opus x 10? Despite all my research, I haven't read that anywhere... Wow!

Well then, I should really top up some credit at Anthropic and try out the costs directly via the API... Ja, auch über die API ist Opus 4 nicht billig, aber hier lohnt der Vergleich offensichtlich noch mehr.

Na da bin ich mal gespannt, welche Prompts ich an Opus schicke... Das werde ich testen. Das wird wahrscheinlich die komplette Projektbeschreibung sein, inkl. aller Details und Aufforderung, auf meinem Bildschirm nochmal Staub zu wischen und im Supermarkt gegenüber einkaufen zu gehen... Krass.

Wie siehst du es mit den "modernen" Möglichkeiten und wie wir uns selbst versklaven oder versklaven lassen? Überwiegt Segen oder Gefahr? Nur Segen? Nur Gefahr? Kann man Pizza mit Ananas essen? Katzen oder Hunde?
