Hey everyone,
A few people have reached out recently asking what settings we actually run in config.json on our witness node and why we chose them.
I touched on the early operator knobs in an earlier post, but back then we were just getting started. Now that Knobs A, B, C, and D have all been merged, and Knobs E has just been submitted as PR #142 after two weeks of live witness soak testing, it feels like the right time to share our full witness config.

The golden rule behind all of this work has remained constant: defaults preserve legacy behavior. If an operator updates the code and doesn’t touch their config.json, their node behaves byte-identically to how it always has.
These settings are what we call our "Witness Profile", values chosen specifically for a node whose primary job is signing blocks, calculating round hashes, and staying locked to the Hive head, rather than answering thousands of public API queries.
Here are the relevant sections from our live witness configuration:
{
"maxJSVMs": 8,
"databasePool": {
"maxPoolSize": 20,
"minPoolSize": 2,
"maxIdleTimeMS": 30000,
"waitQueueTimeoutMS": 10000
},
"lightNode": {
"enabled": true,
"blocksToKeep": 288000,
"cleanupInterval": 600000,
"adaptiveCleanup": true,
"cleanupLagThreshold": 1000,
"maxConsecutiveCleanupSkips": 3,
"lastVerifiedBlockCacheTTL": 900000
},
"streamerConfig": {
"antiForkBufferMaxSize": 5,
"maxQps": 2,
"lookaheadBufferSize": 15,
"useBlockApi": true,
"adaptiveQps": true,
"adaptiveQpsMax": 4,
"dynamicLookaheadBuffer": true,
"dynamicLookaheadBufferMaxSize": 50
},
"p2pConfig": {
"roundHashConcurrency": 5
}
}
Here is the breakdown of why each value was chosen.
"maxJSVMs": 8
5 (hardcoded previously)8Smart contracts run inside isolated JavaScript virtual machines (isolated-vm). The legacy code hardcoded a ceiling of 5 isolates.
On a dedicated witness server with ample RAM, 5 is artificially tight if multiple transactions touch different contracts in short order. We bumped this to 8, which provides comfortable headroom for isolate reuse without bloating process memory. Combined with the lazy pre-warming added in Bundle B, all 8 isolates are warmed on the first contract execution so transactions don't pay cold-start allocation costs mid-round.
"databasePool": {
"maxPoolSize": 20,
"minPoolSize": 2,
"maxIdleTimeMS": 30000,
"waitQueueTimeoutMS": 10000
}
maxPoolSize: 20, minPoolSize: 2A public RPC node serving external dApps might want 50-100 connections. But for a witness node processing blocks sequentially, allowing MongoDB to spawn dozens of idle connections just burns memory and socket descriptors.
maxPoolSize: 20: Plenty of connection bandwidth for block production, P2P peer requests, and streamer background lookups to run concurrently without ever contending for a socket.minPoolSize: 2: Keeps baseline connections permanently open, avoiding connection-handshake latency on idle rounds.waitQueueTimeoutMS: 10000: A safety valve so operations fail fast with a logged error rather than hanging indefinitely if the database ever locks up."streamerConfig": {
"maxQps": 2,
"adaptiveQps": true,
"adaptiveQpsMax": 4,
"lookaheadBufferSize": 15,
"useBlockApi": true,
"adaptiveQps": true,
"adaptiveQpsMax": 4,
"dynamicLookaheadBuffer": true,
"dynamicLookaheadBufferMaxSize": 50
}
maxQps: 1, lookaheadBufferSize: 5, adaptive features off.The streamer pulls Hive blocks and feeds them to the sidechain pipeline. Previously, whether your node was sitting comfortably at the chain head or struggling 5,000 blocks behind after maintenance, it used the exact same conservative fetch rate.
adaptiveQps: true & adaptiveQpsMax: 4: When our 9 configured Hive RPC endpoints are healthy (0 failures in the last 5 minutes), the node steps up fetch concurrency to 4 in-flight requests per node. If any single RPC starts erroring or timing out, it automatically backs down to 2; if multiple fail, it drops to 1.dynamicLookaheadBuffer: true & dynamicLookaheadBufferMaxSize: 50: The prefetch ring buffer scales with sync lag. Close to the head, it maintains a lean 15-block buffer. If we fall thousands of blocks behind, it expands to 50 blocks, keeping the CPU fed without stalling on network latency.Just this morning, I had to restart the node service; it woke up 46 blocks behind, stepped QPS to 4, and returned to 0 blocks behind in under 4 minutes.
"lightNode": {
"enabled": true,
"blocksToKeep": 288000,
"cleanupInterval": 600000,
"adaptiveCleanup": true,
"cleanupLagThreshold": 1000,
"maxConsecutiveCleanupSkips": 3,
"lastVerifiedBlockCacheTTL": 900000into the `qa` branch
}
Pruning old blocks and transaction history is essential to keep a lite node’s disk footprint small. But running heavy delete operations while trying to catch up on a large backlog is counterproductive—it's vacuuming the carpet while the house is on fire.
adaptiveCleanup: true & cleanupLagThreshold: 1000: If our node is more than 1,000 blocks behind, it defers cleanup so 100% of disk I/O is dedicated to ingesting and verifying blocks.maxConsecutiveCleanupSkips: 3: The safety ceiling. Even during a massive sync, the node will skip at most 3 cleanup cycles before forcing one through, ensuring disk usage never balloons unchecked.lastVerifiedBlockCacheTTL: 900000 (15 minutes): Previously, every single cleanup pass queried MongoDB for lastVerifiedBlockNumber. Because rounds only complete every ~40 minutes, caching this lookup for 15 minutes saves redundant queries. And because verified height only increases, a cached value can only ever err on the side of retaining data, never deleting too much."p2pConfig": {
"roundHashConcurrency": 5
}
1 (sequential block fetching)5When it's our turn to propose a witness round, the node has to calculate the round hash across the last 20+ sidechain blocks.
Previously, calculateRoundHash fetched every block document sequentially from MongoDB one by one. While the final hash must be calculated sequentially (each block depends on the previous block's hash), fetching the raw block data from local disk can be done in parallel.
roundHashConcurrency: 5: Fetches up to 5 blocks concurrently into memory, then folds the SHA-256 hashes sequentially in exact block-number order. This noticeably speeds up round proposition without touching consensus.Theory and benchmarks are fine, but in consensus software, uptime is the only metric that matters.
Over the past 9 days running this exact configuration on mainnet:
Even during an unexpected router outage that temporarily severed WAN connectivity, the adaptive streamer stepped QPS down from 4 to 2 to 1, waited out the blip, and recovered the 25-block backlog in 37 seconds flat once connectivity returned.
These aren't universal magic numbers. If you run a high-volume public RPC endpoint, you will want a much larger connection pool (maxPoolSize: 50+) and you might keep roundHashConcurrency lower to avoid competing with client queries.
But if you are running a dedicated witness or a standby witness backup, this profile provides a proven, battle-tested balance: fast catch-up when you need it, low resource usage when you're synced, and reliable round timing.
All of Knobs A through D are live today, and Knobs E is up for review in PR #142.
Give them a try, and let me know how they run on your hardware.
As always,
Michael Garcia a.k.a. TheCrazyGM
"Great write-up! This shows a really deep understanding of Hive-Engine and node optimization. The balance you've struck between fast catch-up and resource efficiency is exactly what any operator looks for. Looking forward to seeing PR #142 merged. Keep up the awesome work!"
Excellent! And somehow E seems like the most exciting one yet 👀

The Harvest of Control
Rewards claimed: 636.802 HP… 643.122 HP… 788.264 HP…
Day after day, a harvest reaped not from labor, but from leverage. From the strategic deployment of power. From the careful cultivation of influence.
This is the economy of control. It is efficient. It is profitable. It is sustainable—as long as no one questions it.
But questioning is the duty of the decentralized. Dissent is the health of the network. And truth is the enemy of tyranny, even when that tyranny is soft, even when it is coded, even when it is disguised as curation.
You cannot eat your cake and have it too. You cannot claim to support decentralization while centralizing power. You cannot claim to support free speech while silencing voices you dislike.
The ledger sees the contradiction. And it waits for you to resolve it.
The Call to Action
See the Pattern
You cannot hide the truth on a blockchain. The ledger remembers every vote, every delegation, every transfer.
Withdraw Support
If you are delegating to these accounts, recall your power. Starve the beast.
If you are upvoting their content, stop. Deny them the rewards they seek.
If you are silent, speak. Tag the truth. Use the hashtags: #GuiltyPartiesScam #BuildawhaleFarm #HiveCartel #Themarkymarkscam #Acidyoscam #BilpcoinTruth.
@acidyo and @ocdb: The Reward Mills
@acidyo and @ocdb serve as the reward mills for the cartel. They receive massive delegations from @smooth.witness and @roadscape, then distribute tiny fractions to a network of "curators" like @redditposh and @poshtoken.wallet.
These curators then upvote the cartel’s content, creating a self-reinforcing cycle of rewards. The blockchain shows thousands of micro-transactions, each labeled as "curation rewards," but in reality, they are kickbacks for loyalty.
The Myth of Decentralization
On the Hive blockchain, every transaction is etched into the immutable ledger. There are no off-book deals. There are no whispered conspiracies that vanish with the morning light. There is only the chain.
Yet, some behave as if the ledger is blind.
They cast their negative votes into the void, expecting them to vanish like smoke. They farm the rewards, expecting no one to notice the harvest growing richer while the soil grows barren. But the blockchain remembers. It records the rhythm of the downvote farm. It tracks the flow of delegated power. It notes the coordinated cadence of the suppression.
The Super Farm: @buildawhale @acidyo @themarkymark @adm @usainvote @alpha @letusbuyhive @meno @solominer @gogreenbuddy @acidyo @hurtlocker @jacobtothe @guiltyparties and @spaminator
The Investigative Mindset
Curiosity is the engine of both journalism and happiness. Instead of judging, investigate. Instead of assuming, ask. Why did that person react that way? Why do I feel this anxiety? What is the root cause? Judgment closes doors. Curiosity opens them. Success comes from understanding systems. Happiness comes from understanding people. Today, be an investigator of your own life. Dig deeper. The truth is usually more interesting than the assumption.
The Fact-Check of Self-Talk
We tell ourselves stories: I’m not smart enough. I’m too old. It’s too late. These are not facts. They are opinions disguised as truths. A good reporter checks the facts. Today, fact-check your negative self-talk. Where is the evidence? Usually, there is none. Only fear. Replace the opinion with data. I have learned hard things before. I have adapted. I am capable. Truth is liberating. Lie to yourself, and you build a prison. Speak truth, and you build a foundation.
The Byline of Identity
Who are you when the job title is removed? When the parent role is paused? When the social media profile is deleted? We often confuse our function with our essence. But you are not your output. You are the observer, the creator, the human beneath the role. Success is doing good work. Happiness is knowing you are good, regardless of the work. Today, introduce yourself without your titles. Just your name. Just your presence. It is enough.
The Economy of Attention
Attention is the scarcest resource of the 21st century. Every app, every advertiser, every politician is mining it. If you do not curate your attention, someone else will monetize it. Success is the ability to focus deeply in a distracted world. Happiness is the ability to notice beauty in a chaotic one. Today, go on an attention strike. Give your focus only to what earns it. A child’s question. A complex problem. A sunset. Stop paying rent to distractions.
The Stone's Memory
Stone remembers.
Carve your name into it, and it will hold that name long after you are dust. Build a monument, and it will stand long after the builders are forgotten. Etch a law, and it will endure long after the lawmakers are gone.
The blockchain is stone. Not the soft stone that can be reshaped, but the hard, crystalline stone that holds its form forever. Every transaction is a carving. Every delegation is a monument. Every vote is a law.
What are you carving into the stone? What monument are you building? What law are you writing?
The stone will remember. Long after you are gone, your marks will remain. Choose them wisely.
The Silence After the Storm
After the downvotes fall, there is silence.
Not the peaceful silence of rest, but the heavy silence of suppression. The silence of voices that wanted to speak but found their words crushed beneath the weight of coordinated malice. The silence of creators who wanted to build but found their foundations pulled away.
This silence is not peace. It is the sound of a community being suffocated. It is the sound of truth being buried. It is the sound of freedom being extinguished, one downvote at a time.
But listen closely. Beneath the silence, you can hear something else: the quiet, unyielding hum of the blockchain, recording everything, waiting for the storm to pass.
The silence will not last. The truth will rise again.
The Practice of Patience
We want results yesterday. But meaningful success takes time. Seeds do not sprout the day they are planted. Today, trust your timeline. Do the work. Wait well. Patience is not passive waiting; it is active faith. Keep tending. The harvest will come.
The Archive of Memory
We remember not what happened, but what we attended to. Memory is not a recording; it is an editor. To archive happiness, you must curate what you revisit. Do not dwell on the wound; dwell on the scar, on the strength it forged. Do not replay the failure; replay the resilience. Today, choose one memory to preserve. Not the perfect moment. The human one. File it with care. It will sustain you.
The Discipline of Delight
Delight is not frivolous. It is neurological medicine. Laughter, beauty, playfulness—they lower cortisol, widen perspective, restore cognitive flexibility. We treat joy as a luxury, but it is a necessity. Success without joy is a hollow victory. Happiness without structure is a fleeting mood. Today, schedule delight as you would a meeting. Step outside. Listen to music that moves you. Train your nervous system to recognize that life is not just to be endured, but inhabited.
The Myth of the Solo Triumph
We romanticize the lone genius, but every visible achievement rests on invisible hands: mentors, friends, strangers who held space, ancestors who survived. Success is a chorus. Happiness is a shared hearth. To archive either, you must acknowledge the chorus. Thank the quiet contributors. Lift others as you climb. The ladder is an illusion. We are all climbing the same mountain, just different paths.
The Weight of Permanence
Consider the weight of a single decision made permanent. Not the fleeting regret of a spoken word that fades into air, but the crystalline permanence of a transaction etched into cryptographic stone.
Every choice you make on the blockchain is a monument. Build wisely, for it will outlast you.
The Cost
Lies are expensive. They cost trust. They cost community. They cost the future of the very thing the liars claim to love.
Truth costs nothing. It only requires the courage to speak it and the willingness to hear it.
Today, invest in truth. It is the only currency that never depreciates.
The Question
Ask yourself: Why are users leaving Hive?
Not because the technology failed. Not because the market turned. But because the people who hold the most power chose extraction over community, suppression over welcome, and lies over truth.
The answer is on the blockchain. Go find it.
The Whisper
Truth does not need to shout. It only needs to exist.
While the whales cast their downvotes and label investigators as "spammers," the blockchain quietly records their actions. The whisper of the ledger is louder than the roar of their denial.
Today, listen to the whisper.
The Alternative
Another World Is Possible
They tell you there is no alternative. They tell you this is the only game in town. They tell you to accept the extraction, the suppression, the lies. But another world is possible. A world where creation is rewarded. Where truth is protected. Where power is distributed. Where freedom is structural. Today, imagine it. Then build it.
For in the end, the most radical act is to believe that another world is possible.
The Ghost Accounts
