Luke 12:19 NIV
[19] And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry."'
The parable of the rich fool was prompted by a stranger who asked Jesus a question amidst spiritual teaching. His concern possibly wasn't on Jesus' warning and encouragement on spiritual awakening but rather on the property he owned. He had asked Jesus to tell his brother to divide their inheritance, but instead of Jesus seeing such a plea as a relevant thing to do, he taught the crowd a parable of a rich fool whose life was taken after he boasted of his substance.
The passage showed a farmer who had a bountiful harvest and whose attention suddenly drifted from God to his belly and abundance. All he thought of was expanding his barn and making more space for himself to be merry, but unfortunately his life was taken shortly before he was privileged to eat of that which he laboured. Jesus's teaching on the parable was not majorly on the farmer's pride, but on the farmer's priority. He told the parable to tell the man who was so concerned about his inheritance that properties weren't of much interest if they weren't rich in God's knowledge, and that to eat and drink is only in God's power.

The Bible referred to him as a rich fool simply because his abundance was strictly materialistic and had no concern for God's agenda. The teaching spread abroad, telling the crowd who followed Jesus to shun considering only earthly riches but to become both rich in God's word and other material. I believe the young man who asked Jesus to tell his brother to share their inheritance would have gone home feeling either disappointed or enlightened. However, this passage of the Bible tells us what truly matters as Christians. While many fight and put their trust in achieving material possessions, Christians should strive equally for spiritual awakening.
