Cultures and traditions are part of what makes us who we are, starting from our names, the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the language we speak.
Our culture speak alot about us, and each and every tradition carried out has something it depicts.
Every year the Epie tribe (ijaws) in southern part of Nigeria celebrate the harvesting of new yarms, called traditionally and obunem epie.
Communities under the yenagoa local government in southern Nigeria come together to celebrate, which follows with series of activities like wrestling, dancing, women dressed as men, sharing stories pertaining the olden days, visiting clan heads and giving out gifts.
Each year, a community is picked out of the numerous communities, one is picked to be the host for the finale, this year yenagwe was picked. The chiefs of all the communities visits the overall clan head who is also known as Obenibe.
Competition is organized between individuals from various communities, the winners are given monetary prices and the likes.
At the end of the festival, just like Thanksgiving, each community is expected to appreciate their town head which is known as the king with gifts items, which is then accompanied by a prayer towards the community and those that presented the gifts.
