DRUG ABUSE AND ITS EFFECT.

Imageref

When something is said to be abused that means it's not used in the proper way, it being misused and drugs is not an exception.

The dictionary defines Drug as any substance (other than food) that is used to prevent, diagnose, treat, or relieve symptoms of a disease or abnormal condition.

While Drug Abuse as the use of illegal drugs or the use of prescription or over-the-counter drugs for purposes other than those for which they are meant to be used, or in excessive amounts. It could also be called substance abuse.

Again, Drug use becomes drug abuse when an individual continues to use a drug even when they are aware of its repercussions to their physical and mental health, relationships, work, school, or daily functioning.
This includes using illegal substances as a way to cope with life and taking prescription medication in a way other than what one’s doctor has prescribed. Using prescription drugs recreationally to experience their euphoric effects and combining them with other drugs to intensify their effects are also considered forms of substance abuse

Some Causes of Drug Abuse

1. Accessibility:- This is a term used to describe the degree to which a drug is easily obtained or used by anyone.
Easy access to drugs causes substance abuse by increasing the chances of a person trying out or experimenting with a drug and consequently abusing it. For instance, if you live in a neighborhood where drugs of abuse are often sold in secret, there is a greater chance that you may be offered such substances in your area.

2. Social factors/Environment:- These are determined by various influences, including family background, education, income, wealth, occupation, or religion, that can affect someone’s risk for substance abuse.
Some examples of social factors that can contribute to drug abuse are peer pressure, a desire to fit in, socioeconomic status, and stress from work or school. These social factors can play a role in substance abuse by serving as the driving forces that compel someone to use drugs in excess.

Again being with group of friends that takes drugs can open up someone to drug abuse. Using a particular type of drugs to easy out the stress of the day can lead to drug abuse if the drugs is used on regular basis and without the doctors prescription.
Being with a family that normalize the intake of a particular type of drugs or having a family member that does that , could cause a child or anyone desire to try it out, especially if the person using it says how good and relaxing the drugs has caused him.kr her to sleep well.

This reminds of a particular drugs my mother has been taking, she will combine three drugs together saying it helps reduce body pain, so this day I was in pains and she offered to give me and I took it, and I thought to myself that I should be trying it out too, but a day came that I decided to go to the pharmacy myself and inquire about the drugs , hmm what I discovered shocked me. I discovered that all the drugs were all pain relieve drugs and all are contain the same thing but just that it's from different companies, and it's risky to be taking them the way my mother I'v been doing, since that day I stopped taking those combo.

3. Mental health disorders:– Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can lead to substance abuse as individuals may use drugs or alcohol as a coping mechanism.
Early use – Studies show that individuals who start using drugs at an early age are more likely to develop substance use disorders later in life.

4. Genetics: – Research suggests that an individual’s genetic makeup can increase their vulnerability to substance abuse. Certain genes may make some people more prone to addiction than others.

5. Lack of family involvement:– A lack of strong familial bonds or support can lead to substance abuse. Individuals with strong family ties are less likely to turn to drugs or alcohol.

Another cause is curiousity, when an individual is curious about a particular drugs or substance, when taken in on a regular basis becomes drug abuse.

Some dugs that is abuse

  1. Paracetamol
  2. Diclofenac
  3. Alcohol
  4. Marijuana
  5. Inhalants
  6. Tobacco etc.

Effect of Drugs Abuse

1.Permanent changes to body weight.

  1. Less productivity at work, school, church etc.
  2. Respiratory problems.
  3. Kidney Damage etc.

Treatment of Drug Abuse.

The treatments for drug abuse usually involve a combination of different approaches. There are several treatments available for drug abuse, sime of which includes:-

  1. Family and individual group therapy
  2. Detoxification
  3. Ongoing Treatment etc.

Possible ways of preventing Drug Abuse.

  1. Education and awareness. The church, school, church should teach the danger of drug abuse. Seminars should be held to create this awareness.

  2. Resist peer pressure. People that are likely to make one fall into drug abuse should be avoided like some avoiding plaque.

  3. Seek mental health treatment

  4. Learn healthy ways to cope with stress

  5. Lead a well balance life.

I was to conclude by saying that everyone should take it up on themselves to help reduce the use of drugs, caution anyone you see politely on the effect of the drugs they might probably be taking. I have witnessed several people indulge in drugs and the after math is not something palatable at all, it leads to madness.
In my community there are several mad people and when it's being traced you would discover that it's is as a result of so much intake of hard drugs.
It's always heartbreaking seeing most of them, I would even imagine their family members passing on the road and see them in such state, I'm sure it will be devastating for them. So I plead that we become our brothers keeper.
