Honouring Excellence and Inspiring Tomorrow's Leaders

Today happens to be a delightful day at my place of work, where we get to celebrate the excellence of our students as they bid farewell to junior secondary school and chase greater academic success in secondary school and others beyond it. The students recently just concluded their BECE examinations, and the school, alongside the old students' association, decided to organise a prize-giving day for the outgoing students to celebrate their academic excellence and their impact on the school through the years.

The programme began with opening prayers and introduction of guests, after which we moved to speeches and encouraging words of advice for the students, for them to know that this isn't the end of the road in reading but a stepping stone to greater dreams and accomplishments. We also have lots of games in place to make the event exciting, from choreographic dance to mimicking teachers, amongst many other things, to name but a few.

Getting to the end of the programme was the prize-giving, where the best students in various subject areas were called to raise their prizes; this included award plaques and cash prizes. Students won awards for being the overall best in subjects like mathematics, English, French, cultural and creative acts, and information technology, amongst many others. The head boy of the school came home with at least 6 of the entire award; it's quite strange to see that despite how good he was, no one accompanied him to the event among his parents or relatives, unlike other students.

I believe as parents we ought to be present in the lives of our children and witness and share in different journeys and stages of their lives. Because when other students were called, they had their parents share in their joy, but he was all alone, and that made me feel something. Well, that's about it; we also had prizes given to the most industrious students, the most punctual, amongst many others, to name but a few.

It was an exciting event, and I had a good day as a teacher, even though I'll miss my students, but I know they're going to greater places, and that's what gives me joy as an educator, so I'm wishing them all the best as an educator and praying they attain their best potential in life.
