A Day in My Life: Friday Full of Sports and Fun

Friday at Buhawen Elementary School was a different kind of school day. Instead of spending most of our time inside the classroom, we gathered outside for something that brought excitement, laughter, and a little friendly competition—the much-awaited Sportfest.

The morning felt lively as our learners arrived with smiles and excitement. A different energy filled the school grounds. Some were eager to participate, while others were excited to cheer for their classmates. As a teacher, it was heartwarming to see them enjoying an activity where they could move freely, play, compete, and have fun.

Our Sportfest focused on athletics and fun games, allowing our learners to showcase not only their physical abilities but also their confidence, determination, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Sports are not always about being the fastest or the strongest. Sometimes, they are about having the courage to participate and the willingness to try.

The athletics activities brought out our learners' competitive side. We could see their determination as they prepared themselves and waited for their turn. Every race drew cheers from classmates and teachers. Even those who did not win received encouragement, proving that the event was more than just a competition.

One highlight of the day was the putukan lobo, a traditional and exciting Filipino game that quickly filled the school grounds with laughter. Watching the children try to pop balloons while competing with one another was both funny and entertaining. Their excitement was contagious. There were moments when everyone laughed, especially when someone tried hard but struggled to pop the balloon.

Another fun activity was the sack race. Watching our learners jump toward the finish line was another unforgettable moment. Some moved quickly and confidently, while others lost their balance along the way. But instead of getting discouraged, they got back up and kept going. Their determination reminded me that falling is not the end of the race. What matters is having the courage to continue.

As I watched the children throughout the day, I realized once again that learning doesn't happen only inside the classroom. The playground can also be a classroom. Through sports, our learners learn valuable lessons that books and written activities cannot always teach.

They learn how to follow rules, respect others, accept both victory and defeat, cooperate with teammates, and encourage their friends. Most importantly, they learn that participation itself is already an achievement.

For me, this Friday was not simply another school activity. It reminded me how beautiful childhood can be when children are given the chance to play, laugh, and create memories together.

At Buhawen Elementary School, where our daily school life can sometimes be challenging, moments like this are especially meaningful. A simple Sportfest can give our learners a temporary escape from their usual routines and let them be children.

By the end of the day, I felt tired but happy. My Friday was filled with noise, laughter, cheering, running, and unforgettable moments. And perhaps that is what makes teaching meaningful—not only witnessing learners improve academically, but also watching them grow into confident, joyful, respectful, and resilient individuals.

Today, we did not just play. We learned, laughed, competed, and made memories together. What a wonderful way to end the school week!
