It was just an ordinary day or so I thought.
As usual, I fetched my child to school, though we were a bit late for the flag ceremony. I assumed it was already over, but it turned out the school principal was introducing a new teacher who had just been assigned to the school. Luckily, we arrived just in time to witness it.
There she was, standing on stage, introducing herself.
During the ceremony, a student suddenly passed out due to sensitivity to sunlight, which made her feel dizzy and weak. Fortunately, some parents and teachers came to assist her until her mother arrived right after the ceremony and took over in caring for her.
After the flag ceremony, I let my child go inside the classroom as their class was about to start.
I then went to my usual spot where I spend the next three hours waiting for my childās class to finish. I usually just sit there, scrolling through social media, watching videos, or creating content to post on Hive. I donāt really socialize with other parents much, as Iāve always been more comfortable staying at home and have been quite shy when it comes to engaging with others.
But today was different. I remembered that our childrenās Nutrition Month activity was fast approaching, and we hadnāt planned anything yet. We have a group chat where the teacher posts updates regarding upcoming activities, but most of the time, parents just read the messages and donāt respond.
As the elected classroom president, I decided to step up and initiate a conversation with the other parents about the upcoming activity as I also wouldn't want to leave a bad impression or disappoint the teacher that all the parents in this class section is not minding or supporting their child's school activitiesš
I was relieved that the parents were approachable and open to discussing it. We talked about the teacherās suggestion to have each child bring a nutritious dish individually. However, we were concerned that if no one coordinated, multiple parents might end up bringing the same type of food or worse, that no one might bring anything at all.
So, we agreed that we would cook food at the school instead. We planned to contribute money for the ingredients and supplies. It was a good plan. There were just three of us at first, but we tried looking for other parents nearby to share the idea with them as well. Unfortunately, we didnāt find anyone at that moment.
Later on, as more parents arrived to pick up their children, we explained the plan to them and asked what they intended to bring for the activity. Since most of them hadnāt decided yet, we changed the plan again and agreed that everyone would still bring food individually but with clear communication to avoid bringing the same dishes. I suggested a few nutritious yet affordable options, and they agreed. From there, we coordinated who would bring what.
I'm really glad I found the courage to initiate the conversation. I feel that if I hadnāt, no one might have taken the lead, and the activity couldāve ended up being limited to just fruits, as many mentioned when I first asked. Iām grateful that we were able to work as a team to make the event more engaging and fun for the children.
After class, I took my child home but not before buying a dish, since I didnāt have time to cook and my husbandās break time was approaching.
On the way, we passed by a college school near our home that had just finished their first-day of school activity.
It was a fulfilling day for me. I hope yours was too.
Thank you for stopping by. ā¤ļø
