Building a Duck Pen in the Backyard: A Simple DIY Project for Ducks and Garden Protection

Hello everyone! This is my first time posting here in the Daily Blog Community, and I’m excited to share a simple part of my everyday life. πŸ’›

Quiet moments at home often turn into the most productive ones. One afternoon, while my husband was busy tracking the rice harvest and my child was asleep, I found myself standing I our backyard, watching my ducks wander freely among my plants. They had always roamed around the garden, but as I planned to start a vegetable plot and plant more flowers, I realized it was time for them to have their own space.

This was not a planned project. I did not have proper tools, or anyone to help me. I only had a short amount of time before my child woke up. So I worked quickly and relied on whatever materials were available around the house The goal was simple, to create a basic enclosure that would keep my ducks safe and give my garden room to grow.

The first step was choosing the location. I picked a corner of the backyard that was slightly shaded and close to where ducks usually stayed. This made it easier for them to adjust to their new area. I made sure the ground was fairly even and dry so the ducks would be comfortable.

Next, I gathered materials. I used leftover wood, bamboo poles, old wire mesh, and nails that we already had at home. Since I was working alone, I chose light materials that I could carry and handle easily. I did not aim for a permanent or vert strong structure, this was meant to be a temporary and practical solution.

After preparing the materials, I started building the simple frame. I pushed the bamboo poles into the ground to form the basic shape of the pen. Then, I attached the wood pieces horizontally to give the structure support. This part took patience because I had to make sure everything stayed upright while working alone.

Once the frame was standing. I secured the wire mesh around it I made sure there were no large gaps where the ducks could escape. I also left a small opening to serve as a simple door which I tied with wire so it could be opened and closed easily.

The final step was checking the inside of the pen. I removed sharp objects, pots and dry grass and made sure there was enough space for the ducks to move around comfortably. Everything was done quickly but carefully, always mindful the tome and listening for nay sound that my child might be waking up.

The result was a very simple, not-so-stable duck pen, but it worked. More importantly, it allowed me to protect my garden plans and help our household in my own way. This small project reminded me that being resourceful, even in rushed moments, can make a meaningful difference in daily far, and family life.

Very nice idea for the ducks, but I bet they will still want to enjoy being among your plants.
