Beyond the Terminal Lights: The Pain of Saying Goodbye

During my childhood, whenever I heard that someone was coming or going abroad, it meant only one thing for me: gifts. Whenever my father or uncle packed their bags and left for the airport, I never thought about how far they were going or how difficult it was for them to leave home. In my simple and innocent mind, I thought they were going to have fun and buy some gifts for me. I spent my days eagerly waiting for them to return and bring Barbie dolls, chocolates and candies for me. To me, the airport was just a magical portal where happy things came from.
But this happy view changed completely when I recently visited the airport to see off my friend, who was going abroad for higher studies. She was my closest friend, and saying goodbye to her hurt me more than any goodbye I had said before. Maybe it was because I now understand how heavy that single word is.
Standing at Allama Iqbal International Airport under the bright terminal lights, I was hit by a sudden realization. I saw a man who was going abroad, leaving his family behind. His wife, mother and father were crying so hard, but he was bound to fulfill his responsibilities. He was holding back his tears, and with a heavy heart he started moving towards the departure door, slowly disappearing from sight.
For the first time, I was not looking at the building or the flashy mirrors, but I was noticing the people standing near the departure doors. Their eyes told a whole different story from the one I had imagined as a child. I saw pilgrims heading to perform Umrah with their lifelong savings, and there was hope in their eyes. Next to them, I saw some men leaving for years of labor. These departures left me wondering whether their goodbye might be permanent, because life and death are not in our control.
As a child, I only noticed the suitcases. But standing there that night, I finally saw the invisible pain and burden carried by those heroes.
This realization made me think about how limited and innocent a child’s mind really is. When we are young, we live wrapped in comfort and ignorance, far away from the chaos of this world. We don’t see the sacrifices, the financial struggles or the silent heartbreaks of adults. They leave their homes and even their country for the sake of their families.
Now, as I step further into adulthood, I often feel that the more I learn about life, the more I suffer. Understanding the reality of this world brings a quiet kind of sorrow. Sometimes, I wish with all my heart that I had stayed young forever, and I imagine how peaceful my life would be. What would life be like if we could stay children forever, protected from the harsh realities of the world?
No doubt, growing up gives us clarity, but it takes away our peace. The airport lights shine as bright as they did in the past, but they no longer represent magic to me. They represent the quiet sacrifices that keep the world moving.
When did you first understand what a goodbye really costs?
