Igbokoda is a very beautiful community located in the riverine region of Ondo state with beautiful roads and monumental structures that'll dazzle even the strongest of hearts. However for a place popularly known as the Land of Fish, the area seems to suffer from terrible water supply largely because the state makes up as part of the oil producing state in the country with Ilaje (local government area igbokoda falls under) being a major contributor. The presence of oil corrupts the water system thus making it one of the most valued resources among the locals within and around the surrounding areas.
I remember the first time I came here awhile back and wanted to fetch some bathing water from the well. It was already getting dark so I initially assumed my eyes were playing tricks on as the water from the well had an odd color. I filled my bucket with ease, turned on my flashlight to confirm if my eyes were playing tricks on me or my fears were true and the latter was the outcome. The first thing I did was ask the guys around if this was normal and how they cope with it. Their response to my question seemed reasonable enough and after much consideration, it dawned on me that I had no other choice but to adapt to this new lifestyle.
Living with this new development has not been easy and sometimes just looking at the greenish color of the water sends chills down my spine. Luckily for us it is still the rainy season and anytime the sky cries, buckets are always outside to collect the clean downpour of the heavens we use for both cooking and bathing which haven't been in short supply of since early last week and hopefully this continues for as long it is naturally possible😁😁.
Trying to locate a computer institution close to the market this afternoon, I found something that caught my eye and walked over to get a closer look. It was a solar powered borehole project right in the middle of the busiest section of the area and this propelled my aura into a happy mood. At first I thought it was just recently constructed awaiting commission until I got really close and discovered it was already public property for over 4 months now. This peaked my interest and I did some digging to get to the root of the problem. Apparently the borehole was fully functional until two months ago and even though the water condition was still the same as what the community was used to, they were still grateful for it.
The borehole just stopped working on its own and all efforts to make repairs were complete failures. This is not even a shock to me as this is the nature of community projects in this country and the sad part about is they make people's life easier only to fizzle out along with their hopes. I have thought about this whole conundrum and I think getting a resolution to this problem will be my own way of giving back to the community before leaving hopefully I can pull through with it ... We cannot allow this to go to waste...... I am open to ideas...
Help me out guys
Thank you
